In Parshat Yitro, the Torah highlights a powerful and surprising preparation for receiving the Torah—specifically how the Jewish people left Rephidim, the place of spiritual slackening and Amalek’s attack. Rashi teaches that just as the Jews arrived at Har Sinai in teshuvah, unity, and renewed commitment, so too they left Rephidim in teshuvah, despite the recent fall and trauma. Rebbe Nachman explains that the greatest test is not the fall itself but what comes after—whether a person gives up or chooses to begin again. The key to this renewal is the light of Torah, which has the power to awaken hope even before redemption is fully reached. By maintaining a daily connection to Torah—especially Halacha—a Jew can overcome doubt, dispel Amalek’s influence, and find the strength to rise again, no matter how dark things feel.
