In Parshat Shoftim, the Torah warns about the Zaken Mamre, the sage who rejects the High Sanhedrin in the Holy Temple. This happens when Torah is learned without joy, leaving a person vulnerable to confusion and error. The Torah commands that his execution be during the festivals, when the nation’s collective simcha uplifts and rectifies. The lesson for us is that joy is not secondary but the goal of Torah itself—through simcha we reconnect to our beginnings, return to Hashem, and prepare for Rosh Hashanah with vegilu bir’ada, rejoicing with awe.

In Parshat Re’eh, the Torah commands us to destroy five types of idolatry upon entering the Land. Rebbe Nachman reveals that each one corresponds to a lack of true simcha, the very root of idol worship. The altars of many stones reflect ingratitude, the single-stone altar denial of even one good point, the idol-tree a false impression that must be burned with holy joy and movement, the carved idols a denial of the eternal joy of the future, and their names mocked as we turn silliness into real joy. By uprooting these five, we open the way to serve Hashem in the Holy Land with joy and truth.

In Parshat Eikev, Moshe’s final forty days with the second tablets reveal a spiritual map hidden in the word arba’im—Aleph, Resh, Bet, Ayin, Yud, Mem—each letter representing a stage in the soul’s journey. Midrashic interpretations connect this injury to three forms of Jewish suffering — financial, physical, and spiritual — and emphasize that Esav’s main attack targets the “legs,” representing both the end of Yaakov’s lineage and their proximity to the earth, a source of impurity. The prohibition of eating the sciatic nerve stems from this event, with Zoharic teachings highlighting its spiritual vulnerability. The human body’s 248 limbs and 365 sinews parallel the mitzvot, with the sciatic nerve linked to the evil force ruling Tisha B’Av, when consuming food or drink would feed the side of impurity. In Parshat VaEtchanan, the Torah repeats the mitzvot of Shabbat and honoring parents—commandments that were already given earlier at Marah. There, the Jews received a foretaste of Torah law, specifically those that require effort and faith: chok and mishpat. These include Shabbat, honoring parents, the Noachide laws, and the red heifer. Why were these given early? Because they represent the bitterness of life’s tests. Hashem gave them before the Ten Commandments to show that the path to revelation and redemption requires navigating bitterness with emunah. Shabbat Nachamu and Tu B’Av echo this theme: after bitterness comes consolation, and with it, the joy and light that only emunah can uncover.

In Parshat Devarim, Moshe blesses the Jewish people, “May Hashem add upon you a thousandfold.” But why does he offer a finite blessing when Hashem had already promised Avraham an infinite one? Rebbe Nachman reveals that while Hashem’s blessings are limitless, we need spiritual vessels to receive them. The Keter—represented by the word “elef” (a thousand)—acts as a barrier that transforms infinite light into something we can absorb. Tzaddikim like Moshe and Yosef access the Keter and pass its light to us with joy, even amidst hardship. Without the Beit HaMikdash, however, we lack the vessel to hold that light, causing us to crash after moments of inspiration. On Tisha B’Av, we mourn both the Temple and the concealment of the tzaddikim—because only together can they sustain the Divine light and joy we so deeply yearn for.

The limitations of human understanding, with all mitzvot—even those that appear logical—must be framed as decrees requiring inner submission. Approaching Torah with faith rather than speculative reasoning brings deeper and lasting spiritual connection. Shabbat, Purim, and related observances are spiritual boosts, designed to uplift the soul and reconnect it to its source through joy, simplicity, and unwavering emuna.
