In Parshat Eikev, Rashi records a dispute over how the followers of Datan and Aviram were swallowed by the earth. Rabbi Nechemiah explains that the ground became like a funnel, carrying them toward one opening and giving them time to reflect before the punishment was complete. This delay reveals Hashem’s compassion: even in judgment, a person is given an opportunity for teshuvah. Rebbe Nachman calls such a setback a betishah, the pushback of the Keter, which tells a person to wait, settle his mind and ask what Hashem is trying to show him. The lesson is not to ignore the warning signs in life, but to use every delay, crisis and reversal as a chance to speak to Hashem, change direction and discover that there is still hope before it is too late.
