In Parshat Shemot, Moshe Rabbeinu is sent to redeem the Jewish people but is challenged by Hashem for doubting their faith, leading to the two signs of the staff turning into a snake and his hand becoming leprous. Through Rebbe Nachman and Reb Noson’s teachings, these signs reveal the deep connection between simcha and emunah, showing that sadness weakens faith while joy activates blessing and redemption. The “voice” of the signs hints to the two voices of Yaakov—first crying out from pain, and ultimately singing with joy and gratitude—and teaches that true geulah comes not through despair but through renewed simcha. Egypt represents exile and constriction, yet the Jewish people survived and multiplied because they held on to joy even in suffering. Yehudah’s blessing in Parshat Vayechi reveals that true kingship and redemption come through humility, truth, and the courage to enter broken places. Yaakov reassures Yehudah that he is not like his brothers who acted with haste, because Yehudah admitted the truth in the incident of Tamar and prevented innocent bloodshed, even at the cost of deep personal shame. In Parshat Vayigash, the Torah’s counting of the seventy souls who descended to Egypt reveals a profound mystery centered on Yocheved, the future mother of Moshe Rabbeinu. Conceived in the Holy Land yet born between the walls of Egypt, Yocheved embodies the spiritual state of being “in and out,” a condition essential for redemption. Drawing on the Maharal, the Be’er Mayim Chaim, and Rebbe Nachman’s teachings, the class explains how exile itself is an expression of the Chamber of Exchanges, where holiness is displaced and must be extracted. Moshe’s power to redeem Israel flows directly from his mother’s unique formation, enabling him to access the Keter, the Infinite Light, and draw it into the world. This pattern is not only historical but personal: every Jew who experiences confusion, displacement, or struggle may be living a Yocheved-type mission, sent into difficulty in order to reclaim hidden holiness. In Parshat Miketz, Yosef HaTzaddik emerges as the master of dreams, revealing how holiness can be extracted from confusion, exile, and darkness. Yosef’s additional two years in prison were not only a consequence of misplaced reliance, but a preparation to master the world of shinui—change—enabling him to interpret Pharaoh’s doubled dreams and guide an entire empire through famine. Reb Noson teaches that dreams reflect the Chamber of Exchanges, where truth and falsehood are mixed, and only a true tzaddik can sift out clarity. Yosef’s compassion, foresight, and simcha allow him not only to interpret dreams but to offer practical guidance that saves lives. His insistence on circumcision in Egypt represents removing the coverings that block truth and morality, preparing the way for the Jewish people’s future exile and redemption. Yosef’s role, joined with Yaakov’s foundation of Torah Emet, teaches that joy is the key to extraction—transforming darkness into light. This is why Parshat Miketz so often coincides with Chanukah: both reveal how simcha and the guidance of true tzaddikim illuminate even the deepest concealment and bring hope, meaning, and redemption.
