In Parashat Tzav, which this year coincides with Erev Pesach, the Torah introduces the Korban Todah, the thanksgiving offering. Rebbe Nachman reveals that of the five expressions of joy, giving thanks is the highest—it is the goal that all other forms of simcha lead to. Gratitude, hoda’ah, activates blessing, clarity, and ultimately connects a person to the Keter, the gateway to Hashem’s infinite light. The Korban Todah includes 40 loaves—30 matzah and 10 chametz—hinting at this spiritual journey. Chametz, representing waiting, is linked to the Keter. But on Pesach, Hashem lets us leap over this barrier and taste infinite light, even before we’re ready. That glimpse gives us strength to move forward from darkness. Through thanksgiving and joy, we begin to climb out of exile and return to Hashem with a full heart.
