In Parashat Pekudey, Betzalel is praised for following Hashem’s instructions even more precisely than Moshe originally conveyed—building the Mishkan before the keilim (vessels). The Mishkan represents ratzon, the yearning that arises when we are distanced from the light. The vessels come later, as containers for the light we’ve longed for. True growth begins not with spiritual clarity, but with desire awakened in the shadow of setback. Betzalel’s name—Betzel Kel, in the shadow of God—reflects this path. In Parashat Vayakhel, the Jewish people sought to rectify the sin of the Golden Calf by donating generously to the Mishkan. Their eagerness reflected their desire to restore what was lost—the ability to wait and trust in Hashem’s process. Rebbe Nachman teaches that setbacks and failures are part of the journey toward Keter, the gateway to divine light. Just as the Kumaz, an ornament associated with impurity, was accepted for the Mishkan, so too can a Jew rise from the lowest places to holiness. By holding on, giving tzedakah, and refusing to give in to despair, we create the vessels to receive Hashem’s infinite light.

In Parshat Ki Tisa, the sin of the Golden Calf stemmed from impatience and a loss of connection to Moshe Rabbeinu. The Jews failed the test of Keter—the ability to wait and trust in Hashem’s plan. Rebbe Nachman teaches that Keter represents the barrier between finite existence and Hashem’s infinite light; only through patience can one receive divine clarity. This theme is mirrored in the Purim story: Mordechai remained steadfast in his emunah, refusing to bow to Haman. In the end, the Keter—the royal crown—was restored to holiness.
