In Parshat Ki Tissa, the Torah describes how the Jewish people lost the two crowns they received at Mount Sinai when they declared Naaseh v’Nishma—“We will do and we will listen.” Reb Noson explains that these crowns correspond to the Keter, the gateway through which a person receives Hashem’s Infinite Light. The Keter works through setbacks that push a person back so his mind can settle and properly receive the light. The sin of the Golden Calf occurred when the Jewish people could not endure the setback of Moshe Rabbeinu’s delay and fell into despair, blemishing both the crown of action (Naaseh) and the crown of desire (Nishma). Afterward, Moshe Rabbeinu moved the Tent of Meeting outside the camp, teaching that when a person loses direct access to the Keter, he must reconnect through the Tzaddikim who carry the light of the crowns. Just as Mordechai in the Purim story was not accepted by everyone despite being the true leader of the generation, those who truly seek Hashem sometimes must step beyond the status quo to find the Tzaddikim who reveal Divine light. Ultimately, these crowns will be restored with the coming of Mashiach, when the Infinite Light will once again shine openly upon Am Yisrael.
