Hello, everyone, welcome back to the Get Well Live Well and Thrive podcast. My name is Dana Lyons, and I'm your host. And today I may be all over the place a little bit, I'm going to share some things. We are in the healthy self care series. Just so you know, I, I'm going to be wrapping up this series by the end of July. Right now we're in July 2024. And we have a few weeks left. And we're going to wrap this healthy self care series up at the end of the month. And we're going to go on to other things. And so welcome back, welcome to self care island, we're going to be talking about another part of what I think is required for what I like to call healthy self care. There is, you know, the world's way of doing self care, and it's a lot of self help, and it's all driven by self. But there is another way that I call what I call healthy self care in Christ. It's really the healthy self care series. And that is we do it spiritually, holistically, spirit, soul and body. And it's taking care of our whole selves. And I'm a full believer, we cannot give away what we don't have. And we truly will only love people by the way that we love God and love ourselves. And so often we could either live this life of going to this extreme of laying it all down for other people with not taking very much care, like ignoring our own needs in that, ignoring maybe the rest that we need, not being present in the moment, not keeping our priorities priority. But living a life of like survival mode, just going through the motions, because there's just so much coming at us. We don't feel like we could take time to just go, wait, hold on timeout, I need I do need to refresh because I'm on total depletion. And we just think we could continue to go like the Energizer bunny. But the truth is, even Christ took naps, even Christ went away to be with the Father, he said, Oh, there are all these needs. If you read scripture, he was always bombarded with the crowd. There are always people, if anybody knows what a busy life is, and the needs of so many, it was Christ. And if he could go away to be with the Father and have his own quiet time, so can we, to refresh, to refuel, to take a breather, to get re-energized so that we can go back and do all that he's called us to do, to be all that he called us to be. That's healthy self-care to me. And that's what I'm talking about. I'm not talking about let's bring self, like the self-help into the church. I can hear already a lot of people going, I don't know about that. That sounds pretty self, like self-help Dana, that's new agey. No, that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about putting, making priorities priority. Because when I talk to so many and none of us are exempt to go, I'm so busy, I don't even have time to read my Bible. I'm so busy. I've got a ton on my plate on Sunday. I don't even have time to go to church. I'm so busy. I haven't prayed all week. And the truth is, I don't know if you've ever heard that, that phrase where it says seven days without prayer makes one week, meaning W-E-A-K, like if we're not refueling and we're not refreshing and keeping our priorities priority, we're not going to live this life very long for this life, very well, very, for very long because none of us are God. We have God in us, but we still live in this imperfect world with these bodies who are, that are continuing to age. And eventually these will die. And as Christians, we get to go to heaven and live with the Lord for eternity, but it's our soul and our spirit go to heaven. We'll get it. We'll get bodies, heavenly bodies that will live forever. But these bodies are breaking down. We call it clutter along the way. We don't have, you know, if Christ had to get away and he could take naps, so do we. And

Hey, everyone, welcome back to the Get Well, Live Well & Thrive podcast. My name is Dana Lyons and I'm your host, and I want to welcome you back to self-care island. This is a time when we just set aside. It's a fun phrase we're using to set aside time for us just to take a little pause in our day. We're not going to multitask where we listen to this series. This is a series where I want you to be hyper-focused on yourself for a little bit. This is an average of maybe a half hour for each episode, and it's a time when we just grab our favorite drink, sit in our favorite chair, and pull it up. We're going to kick our shoes off, put them in the water, and we're going to relax just for a little bit. So welcome back. Today, we're going to talk about something that I have been learning how to do better and better. It affects all of us. I have not mastered this yet by any means, but we're going to talk about being present. I think this is the episode, I mean, yeah, episode six in the series called healthy self-care. And I think it is really important. I'm learning as I get older. It's just so important as I get healthier and healthier to be present in every moment of my day. I mean, we all struggle. There's nobody who can say, oh, I don't, I don't struggle at all with being present. I think if you live in the world today, we are all guilty of living distracted to some degree. Why? We have phones that can distract us. We multitask and do a million different things. And that actually is like the way of life. It seems it's our culture. We have, if we're women, and you're listening to me, you're a woman, we tend to do a million things at one time, right? You can hold a baby on the hip, cook dinner, talk on the telephone all the while, watch all your other kids are doing, answer your husband at the same time. And we're just doing things. And we can say we did all those things, but it doesn't necessarily mean that we are fully present in the task at hand at the moment that we're in. And so I want to talk about that a little bit today because it is an issue for all of us that we need to, I think some struggle with it more than others, but we all, nobody's exempt from being distracted in the world today. And I think to get healthier and healthier, we have to be more and more present. I just think it's so important. I recently was coaching somebody, and in a couple of her sessions, she actually did even mention, I was present. I mean, I was taking care of loved ones, but I was not present for years. We could go in what we call, what I call robot mode, where you just go, how many of you know, we can leave our house. I do this. I hate to admit this, but I do this quite often, especially with my youngest child. It's like, we have to go somewhere different today. We hop in the car and the minute you hit a certain street, you could go on autopilot. And every once in a while, she'll be like, where are you going? I'm like, actually, I don't know. You know what? I just, every time I get to that street, we always go this way because we go to this certain location. And I went in, I guess I just went in autopilot mode. I thought I was going there. I was like, all right, let me just turn around and I'll, you know how we do that. It's like something triggers us. We just do the same motion we've done. Every single time we hit that same corner. And I do that with driving, but we could do that in life as well. It's like, we know if somebody is talking, we could do a million different things. We could be meeting with a friend and yet carrying the stress of something that just happened right before. We could be out on a date with our spouse and yet our mind, it is in a million different directions. Wives and moms, you could be with our kids or maybe your job. And men, it could be pulled into, you know, work mode. I've caught my husband several times and I'll just be like, where are yo

Today I am talking about priority. If I asked you if taking care of yourself is important and should be a priority what would you say? Most, if not all of us would say yes. Healthy self-care is important. It doesn't matter what we say but do we do what we say is priority and important to us?
No one does this perfectly all the time. There's no better time to start fresh than right now. I have a few suggestions to help you do that.

Hello, everyone. Welcome back to the Get Well, Live Well, & Thrive Podcast. My name is Dana Lyons and I'm your host. And I apologize, this is going on, I think it's at least a week since I put out my last episode and to tell you the truth, I've been doing some of my own more, giving some more attention to my own self-care and, but I want to welcome you back. Today I want to talk about priority. So welcome back to Self-Care Island. This is a series we're doing on healthy self-care. I think this is episode four in the series. And I just want to encourage you, go grab your drink if you haven't already, kick your shoes off and put them in this cute little imagination, a pool of water, whether it's a lake, a pool or the ocean, grab your chair. We're going to sit in and just relax together. Just imagine we're all sitting in a circle, just friend to friend, having some quality time, getting real with each other. Okay. I call it Self-Care Island because I just want it to be a time where we all get together, where you imagine we are just sitting friend to friend, taking some time to relax, to put aside our responsibilities, to put aside all the things that kind of weigh on us through the day and just go, Hey, I'm just going to sit here for just a little bit. Take time out. It's good to be in community. It's good to have accountability and just know one, first and foremost, whatever we talk about, just know you're not alone. Two, none of us have gotten this a hundred percent correct. The only one who is perfect is the Lord. So know that there's always room for all of us to improve and to grow. None of us really grow when we're in our comfort zones. But for now, I want you to sit in some comfort. I want you to just sit here, allow yourself to get uncomfortable, but feel comfortable in the process, knowing you're in good company because none of us gets this right all the time. So I've been doing that this week. I've, I've had my own challenges this week, to be honest, and I've had to care for myself a little extra this week. So I didn't put one out. Uh, I, I try to put one out every, I don't know, four or five days and I think I've gone over that. So here we are, we're going to talk about priority. And I didn't put one out because I had to make myself a priority. So let's talk about, if I asked you, do you think taking care of yourself should be a priority? Something you find value in? Do you think healthy self-care is a, should be a priority? If you had to take a written test, all of us, I think would say, sure. Yeah. I think it's, it's something that should be important to us and it is important. I mean, as parents, we teach our kids, take care of yourself, right? Brush your teeth, wash your face, eat a good breakfast, you know, do all the daily disciplines that we find valuable. We teach our kids to do. But if you have lived any amount of time, you have probably built some unhealthy disciplines in your life that if you were to look at on paper, you'd go, yeah, that's, that's not the best part. I'm not showing that that's a priority in my life. We can just all admit it. We go in and out of phases and maybe you've even, even, you know, found yourself looking in the mirror going, what the heck happened to you? Where did you go? And how did you even get here? I used to find some of these things a priority and I used to do them pretty well. And yet it's been years. Matter of fact, I don't even know where to begin. You know, like i

Hello, everyone! Welcome back to the Get Well, Live Well, and Thrive podcast. I’m Dana Lyons, your host, and today we’re continuing our series on Healthy Self-Care with episode three.
Picture yourself on Self-Care Island, where I hope you're relaxed in your favorite chair with your favorite drink. If you’re multitasking, I encourage you to pause and take this time for yourself—you deserve it! If you’re out for a walk, I hope you enjoy the scenery while I share some insights on self-care.
Today’s topic is boundaries. As I became healthier, I found it easier to set boundaries without feeling guilty. Establishing boundaries is not just about saying "no" to others; it's also about honoring our own needs and well-being.
Let’s consider boundaries from a biblical perspective. God, who is a God of order, establishes boundaries out of love for creation. In the beginning, He created distinct boundaries: light and dark, land and sea. Even in the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve had freedom to enjoy the garden but were given boundaries regarding specific trees—a reflection of the freedom that lies within limits.
Boundaries may seem restrictive at times, but they help maintain order and protect us. As good parents or caregivers, we set boundaries for the well-being of those we care for. For instance, we guide children away from danger to keep them safe. Boundaries, when established healthily, provide clarity and opportunities for growth.
However, we must also recognize the less healthy side of boundaries. In my early years, I created barriers rather than boundaries; these were protective walls built out of fear or hurt, which often alienated others and led to harmful relationships. While healthy boundaries preserve relationships, unhealthy barriers can sever them.
Reflecting on your own life, you may ask yourself whether your boundaries are healthy or stifling. Are they wishy-washy and blurred from insecurity? Many of us, like I did, may have gotten caught in cycles of codependency, adapting our lives around the behaviors of others rather than asserting our own needs.
It’s essential to acknowledge past regrets without allowing them to define us. Instead of viewing ourselves as failures, let’s see these experiences as opportunities for learning. Today can be a fresh start—an opportunity to establish healthy boundaries that allow you to thrive.
Through my journey over the past 20 years, what has helped me most in learning to create healthy boundaries is understanding my value. Recognizing your self-worth is the first step toward establishing boundaries that protect and empower you.
As we explore the topic of boundaries further, let's remember that it's okay to seek help in understanding what healthy boundaries look like and how to implement them. You don’t have to navigate this journey alone. Reach out for support if needed.
Moving forward, I invite you to think about your own boundaries. Are they allowing you to thrive, or are they keeping you stuck? As you begin this process, focus on what feels right for you. Establishing healthy boundaries is about communicating your needs clearly while also respecting others. Remember, learning to navigate boundaries takes time and practice.
Today, choose to embrace the possibility of establishing boundaries that foster healthy relationships, both with yourself and those around you. Let’s take this journey together toward better self-care and living well! Thank you for joining me today, and I look forward to our next discussion on how we can continue to thrive in life. Many of us struggle with self-worth, often fixating on our mistakes and failures, which can overshadow our sense of value. It's easy to conflate what we do with who we are, leading to feelings of inadequacy when we fall short. Yes, I make mistakes, and ye

We can find ourselves in a rut at times. We all go through hard and challenging seasons that can leave us weary, discouraged, and overwhelmed, and before long we notice it's been years since we've enjoyed life like we want or used to. Is there an area of your life that has you feeling this way? You don't have to stay there. You can step out of that place and move forward if you want to.
Today I am talking about giving ourselves permission to step out of those places of weariness and discouragement and start fully living today. We don't have to but we get to if we're willing to do whatever it takes to get there. It will require action on our part and permitting ourselves to leave it behind. Join me.

So today, I want to share with you four key areas of self-care that we can focus on to improve our overall health and well-being. These areas include physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual self-care.
Starting with physical self-care, it's important to remember that our bodies are temples and we must treat them with respect. This includes eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and avoiding harmful substances like drugs and alcohol. Taking care of our physical health is essential for our overall well-being.
Next, mental self-care is just as important. Our minds need rest and relaxation to function properly. This may include practicing mindfulness, meditation, journaling, or engaging in activities that bring us joy and peace. It's crucial to prioritize mental health and take breaks when needed to recharge and refresh our minds.
Emotional self-care involves acknowledging and expressing our feelings healthily. This may include seeking support from loved ones, seeing a therapist or counselor, practicing self-compassion, and setting boundaries with toxic relationships. It's important to prioritize emotional well-being and address unresolved issues to promote inner peace and balance.
Lastly, spiritual self-care is essential for nurturing our soul and connecting with something greater than ourselves. This may involve prayer, meditation, attending religious services, or engaging in spiritual practices that align with our beliefs. Taking time for spiritual reflection can provide comfort, guidance, and a sense of purpose in life.
In conclusion, self-care is not selfish, but necessary for maintaining overall health and well-being. By prioritizing physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual self-care, we can better care for ourselves and thrive in all areas of our lives. Remember, it's never too late to start taking care of yourself and making your health a priority. Thank you for listening, and I hope these reminders inspire you to practice self-care and live a healthier, happier life. Wishing you all the best on your journey to wellness. Taking care of your emotions is just as important as taking care of your spirit and mind. How are you self-caring emotionally? Are you allowing yourself to feel your emotions or are you suppressing them? It's okay to feel sad, angry, happy, or any other emotion. It's a natural part of being human. But it's important to process and express these emotions in a healthy way. Are you talking to someone about how you feel, whether it's a friend, counselor, or mentor? It's important to have a support system that you can turn to when you need to vent or seek advice. Are you practicing self-compassion and self-love? It's important to treat yourself with kindness and forgiveness, just as you would treat a friend. Are you taking time for activities that bring you joy and fulfillment? Do you allow yourself to relax and do things that make you happy? It's important to prioritize your emotional well-being and take care of yourself in this aspect of your life. Remember that it's okay to not be okay sometimes, but it's important to take steps towards healing and self-care in order to become emotionally healthy. Being in touch with your emotions and taking steps to care for them is essential for your overall well-being. Lastly, let's talk about physical self-care. Your physical health is important as well. Are you taking care of your body by eating nutritious foods, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and staying hydrated? Your body is a temple, and it's important to treat it with respect and care. Are you going for regular check-ups and seeking medical attention when needed? It's important to prioritize your physical health and seek help when necessary. Are you practicing self-care in terms of grooming, hygiene, and relaxation? It's important to take care of your physical appe
