  • 35. Investing financially in your creative career using saving pots
Every single month I save some money and invest in myself, my art and my creative career. Whether it is a month when I have loads come in or it’s a lean month I chose to invest in myself even if it is a small amount.

I have series of savings pots to financially invest in my creativity and helps with my mindset I am a freelancer so my income is always irregular.
As well as investing time in my creative career in terms of the organising, practising my art forms, working with others on their shows, getting new work, I also keep on developing my craft and saving money for myself.

As per podcast episode 31 I look at whats due to be paid to me, and my outgoings for the month ahead before the month starts.
I fund and finance my own productions

Light version – one saving pot call it ‘my art’ and put money in every month even if its just a small amount
Whether you are making a film, creating a show, working on a book and a media campaign to go with it, you need cash to help.
From venue fees, consultant fees, to production and research needs money does help the artists world go round.

I have a ‘gigs’ pot. I save into it every month, and much more when I know I have big expenses to come. For example when I knew I was going to gig in Australia and my ticket sales would not get received til months after I came back, I worked out and started saving. Living in Australia for 6 weeks and of course the flights, accommodation, travel food and other costs. The gigs were in February and March – I started saving in the previous September so I was not stressed about paying my bills in London whilst working in Australia. Nor did I come back to huge overdrafts or bills I could not pay.

My ‘Future tech’ pot is for future technology, a new phone, laptop, music and tech equipment for future and better versions and upgrades for software,
When I drain down a pot by pulling cash out of it eg buying a new phone or computer I then go back to filling it back up. If I am saving for larger purchases eg a new laptopn then I might add £500 a month in there til I have got the cash to buy what I want

My ‘Dues & subscriptions’ pot – I put a monthly amount in for annual fees from domains and web hosting to my annual acting Spotlight UK casting directory fee,. So when the direct debit comes out of my bank I already have money in my dues and subscriptions pot to just move over and it does not overly effect that months budget as I have already saved for it

This way I know that what I want to do say the Edinburgh Fringe and have cash waiting to go to pay fringe fees.
It allows me flexibility and choices, mental freedom too.

    3 versions you can try:
    - Light version one pot – all artistic money
    - Marysia version- with various named pots
    - FULL on version – read or listem to Dave Ramsey, ‘Total Money Makeover’ all about take control of yourself financially. where you literally use an envelope system to even set how much money you are spending on food budget that month.

Having money in the bank to support your creative career is important and gives you choices and a feeling of control on months when you have less money coming in. You can choose to see work, research, do a workshop, attend a festival that you like the idea of or hire collaborators.

Putting creative plans into action can often include hiring people and spaces, if you already have some of the money pre saved it helps you choose.

  • 34. Born ready? What do you need to hone to really 'be ready'
Born Ready. Forget about this, Get Ready!

Ask yourself what do you need to do to hone your skills, talents, to be ready to take on an amazing opportunity when they come.

This weeks podcast is inspired by the phrase I was born ready and Rege-Jean Paul’s appearance on Saturday Night Live. The actor who has seen a sudden rise to fame after his steamy turn as the Duke Of Hastings in Bridgerton used this once in a lifetime opportunity to show off his comedic skills and also sang.

Talk about an actor grabbing their moment and showing how born ready they are.. . ‘Born Ready’ is also echoed as the actor in character as the Duke saying he was ‘born ready’ ( Bridgerton Episode 3 5mins 40 secs). Rege-Jean in his opening SNL monologue noted he has been in Roots and also played a high powered lawyer but he completely used this star turn as a way to make other see his greater potential. The inspired ‘off the cuff’ singing of Unchained Melody to swooning cast members and the 3 different American accents.

He showed the world how ready he is and what other work he is ready to do.
He took his opportunity to show what other skills and talent he has …

Also don’t feel guilty as the end of lockdown approaches, if you have not realised any of your goals.

  • 33. Keep On Trucking & Other Creative Life Lessons on my Singing Psychic Anniversary
Four lessons I need to keep re-remembering on my 6th years anniversary of my first full Singing Psychic show..

I may forget these but they are vital to my creative process

    1.Keep On Trucking.
As the fabulous actor Simon Callow said to me, upon me asking advice on creativity, you have to ‘keep on trucking’. Keep on making the work, then the next project, onwards always.

    2.Find The Middle Way.

This is a Buddhist term referring to balance, nothing too extreme either side of too much or too little focus. Balance across areas of mental health, physical, relationship health, financial health to ensuring creative health – so getting dreamt up projects finished and out the door. We don’t want to consistently end up each project exhausted, broke and not having maintained healthy relationships. Sure at times we know we have to drop everything to get projects finished and over the line, from getting shows and art launches ready for press day to long runs that require sustained focus and health.

3.Each creative path and project is rocky but always leads to new vistas and opportunities, sometimes years later.
Every project leads to us learning new skills, or techniques, ends up with us networking somewhere new. Our body of work grows, we get better, more patient and more able to stretch

4.Art is about communication with your audience, the conversations you may have with them, being part of the conversation, the impact of your work on them, the ability to raise your voice on what matters to you from the current It’s A Sin Russell Davis TV show set in the 19080s during the AIDS epidemic to the wonderful Moonlight by Barry Jenkins.
You may never know how your words, film, song or art helped, inspired or strengthened another but just realise it does.

    So keep on trucking.

This week’s podcast is recorded on the eve of my 6th year anniversary of the full Singing Psychic first show. I have made and toured other shows before, but from my creation of the initial idea (or catching it on the creative breeze) to small outings in 2007 and 2011, to workshopping it in 2014, to then Edinburgh Fringe and award nominations in 2016 (and indeed an appearance at the Brit Awards Official Party at the 02) to 2 years ago this week being in Australia doing a run of The Singing Psychic Game Show, TedX talks, TV and radio appearances. From the first Singing Psychic video How To Have A More 50 Shades Of Grey relationship.

  • 32. Three Questions inspired by Tom Brady for your long term success & focus
Three Questions to ask yourself to help you focused on long term success, focus, consisitent and getting projects finished out and over the line. All inspired by Tom Brady, NFL superhero’s 3 year training plans.

It has given me more fire in my creative belly!

Q1: Ask yourself what your three year goals are: creatively
What projects, goals, finishing things, big dreams??
Setting up systems to sell more of existing projects
Look at your life on a 3 year life plan – what do you want

Q2. What do you need to change about yourself in order to achieve your goals?

Q3 What steps can you take today to start to achieve your goals?

Tom Brady has just won his 7th Super Bowl Championship – not only more than any other NFL player but also more than any other team. Plus after he won 6 Super Bowls with the team, The Patriots, he has played with for the last 20 years, but he just moved to a new team the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and won with them. He was joined by his old Patriot teammate Rob Gronowski who came out of retirement to join him in the tight end of the Bucaneers.
He also has won his 5th MVP. and at 43 he has a 3 year training plan to keep himself as fit and flexible to keep playing for as long as possible.

Did he have immediate success in NFL? NO! He was 199th draft pick, 6th pick for the Patriots and his first season he played one game, second season he won the Superbowl with them.
He has a 3 year training plan of short and long term from physical, mental, nutrition, sleep patterns.

  • 31. How my monthly budget supports my creativity, gives me a plan & peace
Every month, at the beginning, I do a monthly budget where I look at what is going out and needs paying for, and what is coming in.

I have been a self-employed creative for years now and my income is always changing as I wait for payments and then have some odd regular work.

I have been doing such a budget for over decade:
    It gives me peace
It allows me to plan where there may be gaps
It has helped me support and fund my own creativity.

Lots of my recent podcast episodes are about the mental health aspects, motivation and ways to keep creating ‘the work’ but for me financing your creative dreams and career is a very important part of the puzzle.
Whether you are a painter, photographer, novelist, musician, script writer or actor, you need to be able to fund your life and if you want to be able to turn a creative hobby into a money earner.
Whatever your creative passion, you have to find a way to make it pay (unless it’s a hobby on the side and that’s OK too). I have been a full time creative, a hobbyist and also that doing both a ‘real job’ and then struggled to find time to be creative around that.

The one thing that always grounds me is to do it at the end, say the 30/31st of each month, or if I have not done it then, by say the 3rd of each month or I get restless. I always do it on paper with budget templates, I could do it on excel or on accounting software as I am great at using that stuff, but I like doing it with pen and paper and the ability to scribble things out and change, write notes and reminders.

    Think of:
All the money that is coming in and there can be a few month gaps between the work you did or ticket sales actually being paid.
The money that is going out that’s standard – rent, phone bill. mortagage, utilities
I also am looking forward to what coming up creative wise etc such as annual subscriptions.
What do I want to pay for this month? eg annual car insurance rather than monthly,
as I hate paying overdraft fees etc

But creatively if I am looking to do a festival in 6 months time, there are always amounts I need to spend, from venue hire, marketing, brochure fees are often paid out months before I get the money recouped through ticket sales. The most extreme version was paying the up front fees including flights to Australia 6 months before I was doing my first gigs there as I had to apply my work visa showing the flights I had booked already . After paying to live in Australia for 6 weeks whilst gigging there (and also keeping all my bills up and running back in London) I was then paid for my ticket sales approx 2 months after my return. That’s a large amount of money to pre-fund.

I am always aware on my budget what is coming up to pay. I need much more savings as a creative as I know I will be pre-paying out many £1000s in advance.

Savings pots I will talk about in the next episode.

If you are freelance then they all pay on different time periods, sometimes late yet the bills are going out very regularly such as rent and phone bills.

It can be incredibly scary to look at your finances but facing the facts of where you are can help your mental state because at least you can start making a plan and you feel a little but more in control.

A year ago if I could see that I would be short one month, then I would just go out and pick up an extra couple gigs in the week , I MC, am a comic, sing, host, even quiz nights as well as my acting work and voice over work plus my own The Singing Psychic and Queen gigs. I had the ability to pick up easily extra work, that has gone at present.
Just the fact I can see if there is a budget hole helps as at least you can make a plan, “oh I guess no takeaways this week/month/forever”. This monthly budget process has massively helped me support my creativity and gives me peace.

When you earn loads you can put money away and remember to put money away for tax, when you don’t earn much you get extra focused on what you can spend or even need to sell or earn more.
There are loads monthly budgets forms online, have a go, let me know how it went.

We will get through this. Just however scared you are financially right night especially due to covid, there are people around you to chat to and support you, help you make a plan or even offset payment plans. Facing the obstacles, facing what is difficult including budgeting when no money is coming is, calling people to say sorry I cant pay this month, will give you a feeling of control back.
If you feel more in control your brain works better and you will sleep better. Your mental health is so important right now. Facing the details of where you spend and where you can save will probably change your life , I stopped going out to dinner massively when I started this process of facing my own financial reality from being an ex City banker to being an artiste.

“Ditch The Dream & Become A Doer! Dreams happen because of blood, sweat and tears. Hard work is what makes dreams happen”…

All of these are quotes by Shonda Rhimes, TV titan, creator, writer and executive producer from Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Scandal, How To Get Away With Murder and most recently her production company produced ‘Bridgerton’

The message for us all is to say yes, to go after our dreams, to become doers not just dreamers.

This week’s podcast is inspired by my Singing Psychic podcast last week when I looking at the songs around Shonda Rhimes’ heart. When I was researching I was reminded of hearing her speak at one of the Cannes MIP Tv conferences a few years ago.
Shonda Rhimes has even written a book called The Year Of Yes, so check it out.

  • 29. Faith in your creativity & ownership of your own content as lived by Tyler Perry
What content are you going to make today, next week?
On what platform you choose that works for you, Tiktok, YouTube, Insta – whatever is best for you.
2 years ago at #Natpe Miami Beach I listened to Tyler Perry do a lecture on having faith in your own creativity and owning your own content and characters.

Twice a week I now make podcasts, one Singing Psychic one (my comedy character) and this Love Your Creativity And Make Money one.
Consistent making of content – but it can feel like you are making content into the ether.
Keep on making it and enjoying.
I don’t know the future but I do know keeping on making the work I can make, is my only possible response at the moment after 2020 and all my normal gigs have gone away.

Keep on going, making work gives us hope.

If I do nothing with my characters they die, I have done some amazing gigs across the world from being a TEDx speaker, performing live at the Brit Awards Official Afterparty at the 02 in 2016, being on TV and radio
I do ask each year: Where are the big projects to do this year for my characters and content?
If you have a show or a character you are developing – get 2 minutes or five minutes out the door, keep learning, honing,
We are all at different stages. I am looking at what gigs I can do in 2021 Thats feasible
Ask how you can make sure you own everything like Tyler Perry (don’t forget to correctly credit collaborators!)
Think about your brand, it does not have to be a dark difficult ‘Oh God(dess)’ word. Tyler Perry had his name before all his early movie titles so Tyler Perry’s Medea etc. Your brand is the fabulous parts of you and your work you choose to put out into the world to uplift and educate.
There are some amazing gigs and work ahead for all of us, we know it as long as we keep on going
    Its about faith and hope.
Where is your work, what is your stamp, what can you make now with what you have got set up. What can you consistently start making?
Belief is everything, as if you don’t believe then you can’t take the action. We all have to take action and keep on going, even if we can’t yet see the end result. That translates back to hope, self belief, mental health and happiness that we can at least move our lives forward even in small but consistent ways

    About me, Marysia Trembecka

I am at heart a storyteller and this has translated from the initial creation of work to being a performer, including film and theatre acting, writing and performing international touring comedy shows to MCing.

Highlights include sell-out Adelaide and Edinburgh Fringe shows, singing at the Royal Festival Hall in 23 different languages, as well as doing TEDx talks and corporate gigs, such as the Brit Awards Afterparty at the 02 as my ‘The Singing Psychic’ bio queen character.

My ‘THE SINGING PSYCHIC’ who ‘reads the songs in your heart’ also has a GAME SHOW version, and was a finalist in Best Show, Funny Women in 2016, and I have toured internationally since then.
I have also produced five webseries as the character including my 23 episode SONGS OF BREXIT webseries I made for the June 2016 EU Referendum, on the pros and cons of the EU, I started the web series singing The Clash’s ‘Should I Stay Or Should I Go Now’. It was very wll received due to the blend of education and entertainment, and I ended up on London Live and even a BBC2 Live Debate on the National Living Wage amongst other press of the back of that.

I also was awarded Arts Council funding for research on a solo show on how we are all judged by our sexuality, so as part of that, I interviewed people on the cutting edge of sexual politics. From this I then created another character ‘Queen Of The F*cking World’ which has also toured internationally from Glasgow WOFF film festival in the female perspective strand to sell-out London, Edinburgh and Adelaide runs. I sing and play the bass guitar and guitar in this show.

  • 28. Review a past successful project of yours: why it worked & lessons to take forward
Part of any business success is looking at the areas they are winning in and doing more of that. It works just as well in the business of making art and creativity.
So this week’s podcast is an exercise. Pick a creative project that you feel was successful: commercial, creative or other success that you ‘shipped’ and got out the down.
This gives you a chance to really drill down and see what worked and what lessons we can carry forward.
It will give you a feeling of control back and help with your mental health about making new work and keeping going.
It can be a book, a song, a sketch shipped out to the world and can be a solo piece or work where you have an important integral part in its development.
    Some questions to ask yourself
1.What worked? What did you get it moving?
    2. What didn’t work, what was particularly difficult. What challenges from tech to story arc to new skills did you need to learn?
    3. How did you finance it, was it boot strapped, a venue helped, did you do merchandise? Did you fund it yourself 100% or to a certain level then get funding later?
    4. Who helped you? What network, co-collaborators? Have you built a group of co conspirators that you work with well and keep on working with.
    5. Did you have a definition of done for the project eg a festival, event?
    6. Did you have a clearly defined date of done – the film will be finished on, the song will be released
    7. Marketing : What marketing or press did you do to market the message of your now successful project.
8 Think about what lessons can you take from this reflection. What went right or wrong/ When is art finished? You can spen
    9. What people did not help in the process, what obstacles did you hit through people
What marketing or press did you do?
How did you manage the art direction – so branding?

    10. Why did the synchronicity or luck kick in to get this moving forward, where did it come from?

  • 27. Exercise on setting master dream goals with timeframes from creative projects to property and financing them all!
Making art and gigging in the current environment is feeling impossible, especially with so much political unrest and the coronavirus around us. However we can always control our headspace and look at our own dreams and find ways to make them happen, even if we can’t control scary events, such as happened in DC yesterday.
Having a think about some areas of your life and your goals in each area over a time period exercise of current to 20 years and more
Get a piece of paper landscape X axis horizontal write 0 to 1 years, 2 to 5 years, 5 to 10 years, so time periods
On the Y axis write areas including creative projects, finance, kids/family, property, travel, retirement, fitness, discipline eg broaden your knowledge or skill in your particular art or creative area.
Build a master dream of the next sections of your life to look at your life ahead. Then look at it and start seeing where if you want to achieve A by 3 years time you need ti start doing B now.

We all feel much less stressed, when you have a plan, when you can see what you want and can see the issues and difficulties ahead, you calm down in your head and thus get more done. You will be happier too!

  • 26. What lessons can you learn about your 2020 to make 2021 fabulous?
Happy New Year everyone! Before setting New Years Resolutions start by looking back in a way that can truly make you rocket forward. Understanding what you did that worked vs what did not go well in your own life, a project or even a year like 2020 to better be prepared for the future is a very useful business tool.
Reflect on your achievements and disappointments of 2020 to then draw out lessons you can learn to move forward to make 2021 a far better year.
This is an exercise I use at the end of each year before I start setting new goals for the next period. I also ask these same questions at the end of each creative project, tour and release of work.
    It is three steps
    1) List all your achievements from 2020 – from things that happened, to hobbies or structures you managed to put in place. Did you keep a roof over your head, get an exciting project, move a goal forward? Did you set a goal a year ago that you managed to gain traction on. Did you move homes, countries, fall in love, be mentally strong and look after yourself.
    2) List all your disappointments from 2020, whether it was plans not kept, jobs lost, projects not finished. Did people disappoint you, did you lose a job, gigs, all your work, get less fit, or indeed not look after yourself properly.
    3) Then read the 2 lists and ask yourself what lessons can you learn from both. Ask
‘why did that work? Why didn’t that work?’ There are always ways to make improvements or changes in our behaviour, systems or ourselves to use such lessons in a positive way. You may see why you succeeded in one area and see how you can add that behaviour to another,
Pick three top lessons from your list, write them down and read them daily for the first 3 months of 2021. If you could learn these threee lessons what difference would it make in your life.
