  • Ep 55 - DON'T FORGET TO REMEMBER.
This week's podcast is from a quote from Dr John Deloney who has a YouTube channel and often works wuth the American finance advice Dave Ramsey.
He talks about 'don't forget to remember'
Meaning thinking about how great we feel when we take positive action like work on our creative projects, take positive steps towards our goals, go to the gym, pick up your guitar, write that finance proposal for your next show. When we take positive action we feel much better after even if we did not want to initially go to the gym in the rain or practise when we could have just stayed in and watched Netflix.

Also the flip side is don't forget to remember how bad we feel when we do things that don't align with our goals ad dreams, whether it is a lack of action such as no gym or no working on your novel or script or whether it is choosing to slump in front of the TV or getting lost in hours of YouTube instead of taking time out to honour your dreams.

Thinking both before we take action and after we have or have not done something that 'don't forget to remember' means we can slowly align ourselves and our wishes against actions.
Change for all of us is a hard process so thoughts that break our behaviours and make us think before we do what we are about to do.
Don't make yourself feel guilty or worse, but it is worth playing with that phrase and seeing if it helps you move forward towards your goal.

  • 52. Getting Cannes Film Festival ready - the joy of a hard deadline
Podcast 52 for Love Your Creativity And Make Money. Getting Cannes Film Festival Ready

There is a real energy and focus you get given when you have a hard external deadline. I am planning to go again to the Cannes Film Festival in 2021, I have been going as an actress for years but there is so much prep to do.
I am using it to get scripts ready, finishing work I want done before I leave so I do not need to stress about it, plus even its got me back in the gym.

So choosing a hard external deadline from entering your work into a film, script or novel funding opportunity or competition makes us work in a more focused way. When I am writing new shows then I find having the deadline on a first showing deadline, or having to do all the tech , budgeting, artwork for new shows that may be touring you really only do it when you have to.
So pick the power of a hard deadline and let its magic work on you.

  • 51. Dr Edith Egel Dont think of yourself as a victim but victimised
Podcast 51 for Love Your Creativity And Make Money.

I am just reading Dr Edith Egel, she has two books The Gift and the Choice. She is a Holocaust survivor and is now 90, a great grandmother and spent many years as a therapist specialising in treating PTSD and survivors.

She talks about how you should never see yourself as a victim but as someone who was victimized. She argues that seeing yourself as a victim means you have lost power and it is very difficult to get strong again. However seeing yourself as victimized by a person or the environment gives you strength to start again and heal.

I do not subscribe to this idea that all great art comes from great tragedy but I do recognise that through our life experiences we can use our unique voices in our own creative waves to teach, talk, discuss, illuminate or inspire is a wonderful use of our pain or life experiences. So seeing yourself as having been victimised vs a victim according to Dr Eger gives you more power. I would also argue you can become a victor by standing up and healing as well

  • 50. Be like an Olympiad - think of Pain as sensation
I am back in the gym and listening to lots of fitness podcasts and interviews with Olmpiads and long distance runners. The idea of them reframing ‘pain’ and thinking of it as a sensation instead is appearing a lot. For supremely fit humans they have to hit and go through the pian barrier on a consistent basis.

I have been using this idea as it applies to creative pain as well, the pain of keeping going, of struggling to finish, of not being able to make the middle arc work or even the pain of not ‘succeeding as we think we should’

So whatever you are struggling with, appreciating that any creative project from filmmaking to novel writing will always have ‘pain’ - tough parts, periods where you cant find the motivation or belief to get through to the next section, helps.
Just think this is just a sensation..

Podcast 49 for Love Your Creativity And Make Money.

Did you know breathing out makes you lose fat ;) How small incremental daily changes will transform your life.

I watched a great Tedx talk from Ruben Meerman on how the body actually releases fat from your body when you are on an exercise plan.
The chemical formula for fat is C55 H104 06, so 55 carbon atoms, 104 hydrogen and 6 Oxygen. We lose 84% of our weight by breatjing out and 16% by the water we produce. Of course you cant just breathe more to lose fat you have to either exercise or be on a calorie deficit to get the fat into your blood cells for your body to convert them into Water or breath.
The issue was the chemist had lost 10kg by losing 85g a day and it made me think of the small incremental changes we can all make to become a different level of performer.
To practise for one week does not change much, for one month you may only notice a small difference but over a year or a decade that is how you become incredible at what you do.
So what small daily incremental habit can you add to your must do lists today

  • 48. Tidying up your half finished projects helps motivate and get you going again
Podcast 48. Tidying up all your projects and knowing at what stage they each are at really helps you refocus.

Productivity research shows that we should do just one project at a time but real life often does not allow that. Certainly as creatives we often have a lot of different projects, often in different art forms, all at different stages. Mnay of mine are stuck in what I call a creative drawer of death.

By first writing down a list of all your projects and what stage they are at on a white board or on paper then you can clearly see where you are at.

Then pick just one and get it to the next hurdle. It may be you need to then wait to get feedback on funding or collaborators in which case go to another project and get that one moving forward until it is time to come back to the first one to move it to the next hurdle.

Getting projects finished one by one is very motivating and satisfying especially if, like me, you have dozens of projects in various stages from draft one, edit 5 to work you have finished but then feel you want to explore it in a different medium.

  • 46. Acknowledging the 'the dip' - that hard part of a creative project, helps you move through it & get it finished
Acknowledging the dip, just how hard that middle or near end part of a creative project, can really you help you move through it

Somehow starting new creative projects or even new creative pursuits, it's so easy to start sometimes to go. ’Oh, this is the best idea ever. I'm going to make this and this and this’, and then about a week later, or a month later, or even, maybe a year later, you are like, why did I start this?

And when you're in the middle of that kind of crazy, middle dip section, and somehow though, your energy increases again, as you power towards the end.

I just reread Seth Godin who has a little book, The Dip, which is well worth a a gander if you've never read it. He talks about the dip, in terms of only pick projects, you know are worth really powering to the end because there will be a dip. There's always that initial enthusiasm and it's the hard part in the middle. Certainly for me getting to the end and through the dip is often... Well, the only reason I sometimes do get to the end of a project is because I have deadlines that are put in place often external ones like,’ oh, there's a theatre waiting and my show has to turn up.

I do know, I'm certainly not the only one who's done that. Willy Russell, the brilliant playwright, who wrote many amazing things, including Educating Rita had literally been paid to write, Educating Rita, and a few days before they were starting rehearsals. He still hadn't writtena note and he offered the money back to them and they're like, no, we've got a theater booked and we've got tickets sold for your new play, you'd better get to writing, so he sat in his room surrounded by books and out popped that brilliant brilliant play, which of course, then became a film Educating Rita.
I actually went to a talk of his on this and I was like, ’oh I'm not alone’. Well, at least people are much much more experienced and better than me, because he's such a great playwright, you know, this is not only me going, why did I start this?

So this is this week's podcast about if you are in the middle or towards the end of the project
somehow accepting that there is going to be a dip is is kind of helpful. I know I'm going to struggle at some point. I know there will be a place where I go- the arcs, too difficult to find. I can't work out what I'm doing. I can't find the time. All the reasons, you know, it's a bigger project than I envisaged.

Seth Godin does make the good point that make sure you really knowwhat you're starting because you need to power to the end.
I remember when I was doing my Singing Psychic character of finally developing it to the first
full one hour show. I was in a workshop designed deliberately so I had to turn up with some new work every week. And at that point, during a improv game the character of my Queen Of The F*cking World show. popped up, but I knew enough to say to her’ love, you're going to have to wait’
I had waited certainly long enough to get The Singing Psychic sorted

We really can't run more than one project at a time. I mean, you end up having to sometimes, if you're freelance with different projects for work. But in terms of your personal work, I think is very difficult.
I think you have to go in do one project as far as you can take it.
Then, breathe then, pick up the next one, then breathe, go back.

So whatever you're doing, just have some patience with yourself. If you're in the middle of a dip.
Just know, it's part of the process and you've just got to find ways, whether you are seducing yourself with chocolate or give yourself the carrot and stick at the end of the day of ‘ I’ll watch some TV after I've done my work for this’,

So wherever you are in your dip of your project, just know you're not alone but know it's part and parcel of the process and keep powering through.
So this was my podcast for this week.
