Author Kevin Brockmeier counts the O. Henry Prize among the many accolades his speculative fiction has earned. In The Illumination he offers an inspiring take on suffering and the often fleeting nature of connection (Publishers Weekly, starred review). When physical pain suddenly manifests itself as shining light, the wounded nature of humanity is revealed.
    Critic Reviews:
This is a radiant, bewitching, and profoundly inquisitive novel of sorrow, perseverance, and wonderment. (Booklist)
Moving. . . . Skillfully explores the relationship between love and memory. (The New Yorker)
Stunningly original . . . this gorgeously written book will still stay with [readers] long after the last page is turned. (The Oregonian)

    unsatisfying
I was unsatisfied when I reached the end. Maybe if I had known in advance that the book is a series of loosely connected stories I would be less critical now. The book moved to a new character too quickly for me. My 2 stars is because I didn't like the narrative structure. Someone who likes short stories, linked together by an object, might really enjoy this book.
The overall idea is terrific and interesting. I wanted the author to push it more and I wanted fewer stories within the story.
    Narration was good.
Start with a bang end with a fizzle
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I loved the first several chapters of this book. Interesting story, interesting characters. I even liked how it was a series of different stories that were interconnected.
The reason I gave it a low rating is because toward the middle and the end the story became unhinged, it didn't make total sense any more, the connection between characters grew more and more loose and had an unsatisfying close.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The performance was fine, nothing great, nothing bad.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
In the first several chapters I was captivated, there was a mixture of happiness, sadness, heartwarming and heart ache... disappointment was the reaction I was left with at the end.
    Any additional comments?
Perhaps if i read this I would have a different feeling. I like audible and audio books because I can listen as I do other things. Maybe this book required more attention than I gave it?? But I believe the owness is on the story to capture my attention, which it failed to do halfway through.

Lacey Terwilligers shock and humiliation over her husbands philandering prompt her to add some bonus material to Mike's company newsletter: stunning Technicolor descriptions of the special brand of "administrative support" his receptionist gives him. The detailed mass email to Mike's family, friends, and clients blows up in her face, and before one can say "instant urban legend", Lacey has become the pariah of her small Kentucky town, a media punch line, and the defendant in Mike's defamation lawsuit.
Her seemingly perfect life up in flames, Lacey retreats to her familys lakeside cabin, only to encounter an aggravating neighbour named Monroe. A hunky crime novelist with a low tolerance for drama, Monroe is not thrilled about a newly divorced woman moving in next door. But with time, beer, and a screen door to the nose, a cautious friendship develops into something infinitely more satisfying.
Lacey has to make a decision about her long-term living arrangements, though. Should she take a job writing caustic divorce newsletters for paying clients, or move on with her own life, pursuing more literary aspirations? Can she find happiness with a man who tells her what he thinks and not what she wants to hear? And will she ever be able to resist saying onelastthing?

    Funny and enjoyable

    Language: English
    Release date: 06-17-11
    Publisher: Random House AudioBooks

    Publisher's Summary:
With the festive season almost upon him, Detective Sergeant Bruce Robertson is winding down at work and gearing up socially - kicking off Christmas with a week of sex and drugs in Amsterdam. There are irritating flies in the ointment, though, including a missing wife, a nagging cocaine habit, a dramatic deterioration in his genital health, a string of increasingly demanding extra-marital affairs. The last thing he needs is a messy murder to solve. Still it will mean plenty of overtime, a chance to stitch up some colleagues and finally clinch the promotion he craves. But as Bruce spirals through the lower reaches of degradation and evil, he encounters opposition - in the form of truth and ethical conscience - from the most unexpected quarter of all: his anus.
In Bruce Robertson, Welsh has created one of the most corrupt, misanthropic characters in contemporary fiction , and has written a dark, disturbing and very funny novel about sleaze, power, and the abuse of everything. At last, a novel that lives up to its name.
Now a major motion picture starring James McAvoy, Jamie Bell and Jim Broadbent.

Rough and Real Edinburgh sounds great!
Where does Filth rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It was a really great listen. Exciting, quite gross and very gritty.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The characters are on the whole all really well developed and you dislike them all equally!
What about Tam Dean Burns performance did you like?
The voice of Tam was ideal for the part. The different voices were well defined and he was a little scarey at parts which fueled the excitement. Very passionate.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
The bridged version couldbe ideal for one sitting as the reader keeps your interested with the varied voices.
    Any additional comments?
Really well rounded listen. Exciting storey, great performance and perfect lenght!
    laughted out loud
What did you like most about Filth?
The funny bits. When Bruce the main character was thinking in his head.N
What other book might you compare Filth to, and why?
Cant think of any other book that was like Filth.

    Bruce the main character.

    laugh.

I thought when the worm was talking, my audio book was faulty and I had two books mixed in together , got half way through the book and realized it was the worm talking, very strange. Did not spoil it for me.
    "Eaaaaaat, Eaaaaaat"
If you could sum up Filth in three words, what would they be?
    Strange. Disturbing. Welsh.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Filth?
The strange interludes where a tapeworm inside the main character is temporarily given a voice.
Those handful of moments give the book an errie and disturbing, but memorable tone; especially in audiobook form.
What about Tam Dean Burns performance did you like?
His reading of Filth captured the tone of the book perfectly.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
There already is a film adaptation of Filth in the works.
So, I can't think of anything other than the film's real tagline "It's a filthy job getting to the top, but somebody's got to do it"

    Publisher: Brilliance Audio

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The only sign of life for miles is an empty BMW. Inside the expensive car he finds clothes that fit perfectly, shoes for his tattered feet, a Rolex, and an auto registration in the name of Daniel Hayes, resident of Malibu, California.
None of it is familiar. How did he get here? Who is he? Who was he? While he searches for answers, the world searches for him - beginning with the cops that kick in the door of his dingy motel with guns drawn. Lost and alone, the man who might be Daniel Hayes flees into the night. All he remembers is a womans face, so he sets off for the only place he might find her. The fantasy of her becomes his home, his world, his hope. And maybe, just maybe, the way back to himself. But that raises the most chilling question of all: What will he find when he gets there?
    Editorial Reviews:
Marcus Sakey has only been publishing for a couple of years, but all four of his Chicago crime novels have been very favorably reviewed. The author has spent a lot of time researching by doing ride-alongs with cops, learning the finer points of picking a deadbolt, and generally inhabiting the seedier side of the city in which he lives. Despite having apparently found a winning formula and loyal following, Sakey resists pigeonholing because he continues to push his work beyond the limits of the genre he has mastered with ease. This latest book has nothing to do with Chicago, and one cannot even say with confidence that it is a crime novel.
Audie Award winner and veteran narrator Christopher Lane brings a charming and credible range of voices to this unusual mystery. An amnesiac man wakes up on a beach in Maine, having lived through either attempted murder or suicide. With the barest of context clues for help and the cops chasing after him, he tries to put the pieces back together. Possibly he has killed his own wife. Lane articulates every ounce of paranoid uncertainty that Daniel Hayes rightly feels toward the few people at home in Malibu that he may be able to trust. As the plot unfolds into two parts soft-boiled Californian scam story and one part jaded Hollywood fantasy life, Lane unleashes such a diverse group of character voices that it's hard to believe they come from the mouth of one person.
As bad as Daniel Hayes may have been before he lost his memory, there are of course bigger sharks in town. Christopher Lane is particularly convincing as Bennett, the smooth talking and fast moving creep who holds most of Daniel's missing pieces close to his chest. Sakey is bravely reworking some of the territory covered by Christopher Nolan's excellent film Memento, but adding a healthy dose of west coast vibe to chill things out and propel this listen toward more entertaining and less cerebral ground.
    Critic Reviews:
Sakey writes like a dream, creates characters exactly like people you know, and above all he keeps you turning the pages. (Lee Child)
    Members Reviews:
    Plot has potential
This book might have been more compelling if it had been edited down by half. If you believe the odd amnesia that Daniel Hayes is supposed to have and if the plot had not dragged on and on, it could be good. I hung in there but it felt tedious.
    A Never Ending Soap Opera
Well written; well thought out plot, but after more than three hours of tedious dialogue, I could no longer take the soap opera pace. I truly enjoy listening to a wide variety of books; as in all things, enjoy some more than others.

    Publisher's Summary:
Oliver Tate, the dryly precocious, soon-to-be-15-year-old hero of this engagingly offbeat debut novel, lives in the seaside town of Swansea, Wales. At once a self-styled social scientist, a spy in the baffling adult world surrounding him, and a budding, hormone-driven emotional explorer, Oliver is stealthily (and perhaps a bit more nervously than hed ever admit) nosing his way forward through the murky and uniquely perilous waters of adolescence. His objectives? Uncovering the secrets behind his parents teetering marriage, unraveling the mystery that is his alluring and equally quirky classmate Jordana Bevan, and understanding where he fits in among the pansexuals, Zoroastrians, and other mystifying, fascinating beings in his orbit.
Its in my interests to know about my parents mental problems, he reasons. Thus, when he discovers that his affable dad is quietly struggling with depression, Oliver marshals all the daytime-TV pop-psychology wisdom at his command - not to mention his formidable, uninhibited powers of imagination - in order to put things right again. But a covert expedition into the mysterious territory of middle-aged malaise is bound to be tricky business for a teenager with more to learn about the agonies and ecstasies of life than a pocket thesaurus and his worldly school chum Chips can teach him.
Ready or not, however, Oliver is about to get a crash course. His awkwardly torrid and tender relationship with Jordana is hurtling at the speed of teenage passion toward the inevitable magic moment... and whatever lies beyond. And his boy-detective exploits have set him on a collision course with the New Age old flame whos resurfaced in his mothers life to lead her into temptation with lessons in surfing, self-defense - and maybe seduction. Struggling to buoy his parents wedded bliss, deep-six his own virginity, and sound the depths of heartache, happiness, and the business of being human, whats a lad to do? Poised precariously on the cusp of innocence and experience, yesterdays daydreams and tomorrows decisions, Oliver Tate aims to damn the torpedoes and take the plunge.

    great book
    Funny
There aren't many books that expemplify intelligence and character in young teens. Even more so, the heroes rarely have such candid dialoge or engaging vocabulary. This is honest description of todays suburban youth is entertaining and captivatingly humorous. The content is comparable to C.D. Paynes Youth in Revolt, though not nearly as exciting and nerve racking.
Highly recommended to any one who enjoys unlikeable heroes and has experianced a dysfunctional posh cliche childhood.

As their jolting affair skyrockets with electric passion, shocking secrets break through their hidden traps - in a brilliantly twisting story that sparks with the explosive Jackie Collins touch.
    Critic Reviews:
"Dishy dirt abounds in Collins' latest glitzy Hollywood soap - a made-for-TV melange of treachery, tragedy and suspense complete with flashbacks and fade-outs. Collins also litters the narrative with names of real-life stars and drops tasty tidbits about unnamed celebs. Collins piles on the glamorous scandals, deceit and raunchy sex that her fans expect - and a couple of spicy secrets surprise at the end. Diehard fans will eat it up." (Publishers Weekly)

IF YOU LIKE Jackie you will probably like this!
I consider this one of my dumb reads! Something mindless to pass time - I do enjoy reading and listening to books and sometimes I want something mindless so I can cross-stitch or sew while listening. This is one of those books!
An okay narrator but definitely better than when Jackie decides to read herself!
If you like Jackie then you will probably like the book and like I said - it is a mindless book so you can do other things while listening!
    Enjoy!
    I really enjoyed this!
I feel like more time should have been spent untangling things at the end but it was still a good book.
Not bad if you like over the top books
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
    As an easy read
Would you ever listen to anything by Jackie Collins again?
    Probably not.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
    No, the narrator was good
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    not really
    Any additional comments?
I loved JC's book back when she wrote Hollywood Husbands. She started the whole trend of voyeurism for Hollywood celebrities. Now with every TV show giving viewers a dose of "reality" JC's books have lost their appeal and the story lines are no longer shocking or leave you in a state of disbelief. Honestly, they are tame compared to reality shows like ROWOT-fill-in-the-blank; hip-hop-nobodies; bad-girls-but actually immature; divas-but not really, etc.
Not the same calibre as other Jackie Collins
I have read a few of Jackie Collins' books and this once comes no where near them in terms of the plot general story. I think that the title is a misnomer as there was nothing particularly "thrilling" about this book
    just ok
Typical Jackie Collins book, it has been my experience if I've read one I've pretty much read them all. She does make me grateful though that if the characters in her books are any thing like the people in show business I'm glad I'm not in that world.

Ups.. Rating based on first book
I read wrong in the title. And have not listened to this book yet. How you I delete my rating??
Correct review and rating.. When I have listened to it :)
    Fairly disappointing
    Any additional comments?
Review: I really wanted to read this book after having read thirteen little blue enveloped last year,no need to know what happened to the last blue envelope and I wanted some more Maureen Johnson, having really enjoyed the previous book. Firstly, I made the mistake of downloading this as an audiobook again. It is so hard to try and enjoy a novel when the narrator clearly can't do any accent that isn't general American, and this bok has English, Irish, Scottish and French accents, a lot of which came out sounding decidedly Asian or just plain comical.
I was pretty disappointed with the way this book turned out to be honest. It recycles a lot of the material from the first novel, travelling around, looking for items to fulfill her aunts wishes, and we actually never get to hear the final letter in its entirity! The whole concept centres around someone holding the letter hostage and essentially blackmailing ginny to travel to different countries to him so that he can get some money out of her, very blizzare and not entirely a safe thing for a young girl from a different country to be doing!
Thank goodness for Keith, that's all I can say. The loveable rogue that Ginny met in the original novel is back and just as funny as ever. The only problem is that he is no longer signal, of course this involves a whole heap of problems from Ginny and I really did enjoy this element of the storyline-YEY! The journey that they go on has comical elements too and the storyline is definitely fast paced, I was just pretty disappointed that the storyline wasn't as exciting and meaty as I the first novel.

    Great book!
Enjoyed it and will listen again, to both this one as well as the first! Great story and good narrator.
    Dreadful narration! Don't bother downloading!
I listened to Sara's first book and the narration was quite good, albeit annoying at times with the aggressive tone. However, this book's narrator doesn't even pronounce the names correctly and her tone is irritatingly Polyanna. I finally gave up and downloaded the written version. Don't waste your money on this one!
    Horses, you gotta love 'em
This was a really good and sweet story about horses, teenage girl and her mom. It was well written and performed. I would encourage anyone who loves horses to read it.
    Book-Good. Narrator-Needs work
What didnt you like about Catherine Gaffneys performance?
The narrator needs to learn how to properly pronounce the words. I've dealt with this in other audio books, also. The German word "Mutti" is NOT pronounced Mutt-ee. It's pronounced MooTee. Never having read the hard copy, it took me a couple of chapters to figure out who exactly this 'Mutt' person was. Very distracting, because every time she says it, I just want to scream at her.

The Sisters now have their pardons and with the exception of Myra and Annie they have all moved forward creating individual lives of their own. However, they will always be 'The Sisterhood' and have now been presented with gold shields by the President and with those comes the request for one last job and of course they accept. Somewhere within the Alphabet Soup of Washington a dark agency exists that has a never ending supply of funds, or at least they did! Money has gone missing and The Sisters are charged with finding out the who and the where. In the end the job turns out to be all too easy and even the girls are a little disappointed at just how easy it is to get the birds to sing.
The job comes to a conclusion, the young Sisters go back to their now busy lives full of normal day to day things and babies. Is this the end of The Sisterhood??? I think not, just the names and faces will change.
Fern Michaels, thank you for this wonderful series and I'm looking forward to the next, modified series of The Sisterhood.....
    Wonderful story
Maggie finds her true love when the President invites ker to Camp David for Thanksgiving. There is another mission, but no one knows who they are after. They will figure it out
    Boring
Hard to read. Not the usual fast moving exciting read. Slow progression almost like it was a filler book and the stupid ghost crap through the epilog? No
    Very Giid
Enjoyable. So glad it is going to continue. Didn't know how she was going to pull it off but she did.

    Publisher's Summary:
This riveting tale from critically acclaimed author Paul Theroux inspired a powerful motion picture and is considered a modern masterpiece. Allie Fox is a brilliant inventor. Hes also a deeply paranoid man who is disenchanted with American materialism and conformity. Abandoning his old life, he believes he can build a better existence for his family in the Honduran jungle. But Allies utopian ideals are more easily imagined than realized, and soon his dark obsessions lead his family down an extremely angerous path.

A genius who is also crazy
An American inventor fed up with modern life moves his family to Honduras. They buy an island and attempt to spread modernity by building a massive ice making machine in the jungle. Some pirates come and their fancy machine not only kills them when it explodes, but also contaminates their island. The family flees with what little they have and starts again, but too close to the sea. Anticipating this the father builds their house to be like and arc, which is necessary when the rainy season finally takes them out to sea. They drift into a missionaries camp, some friends from their passage to Honduras, and the father again does something foolish. This was pretty good and was even made into a movie, but the movie lacked the details. This is one of Theroux's better fictional works. It made me think that perhaps modernity is sometimes a dangerous thing and some places should never be modern.
Awesome narration of a classic story
D.A.B. really portrays the character lot well! Love the good guys, here the bad.
    Excellent narration
What does David Aaron Baker bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
His performance particularly with the lines of Allie Fox is chilling, almost scary.
    Any additional comments?
I haven't seen the movie, but after this great narrator performance I'm not sure if I even want to spoil it.
