    Title: Oreo
    Author: Fran Ross
    Narrator: Robin Miles
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 8 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-28-16
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
A pioneering, dazzling satire about a biracial black girl from Philadelphia searching for her Jewish father in New York City.
Oreo is raised by her maternal grandparents in Philadelphia. Her black mother tours with a theatrical troupe, and her Jewish deadbeat dad disappeared when she was an infant, leaving behind a mysterious note that triggers her quest to find him. What ensues is a playful, modernized parody of the classical odyssey of Theseus with a feminist twist, immersed in seventies pop culture, and mixing standard English, black vernacular, and Yiddish with wisecracking aplomb. Oreo, our young hero, navigates the labyrinth of sound studios and brothels and subway tunnels in Manhattan, seeking to claim her birthright while unwittingly experiencing and triggering a mythic journey of self-discovery like no other.

I havent given up on this book, but i have tried multiple times to get not it and find it quite hard to get into. I was personally intrigued by the time it was written and that it is a story about and from the perspective of a biracial woman. I thought the Jewish & Black angle made it sound especially interesting as a uniquely New York story that I was really excited for, and I was personally eager to see a similar representation of myself in a fictional book. Ultimately, I couldn't really understand the jokes, which ironically is kind of a trope with being mixed-race or biracial is that one side doesn't fully understand the other. Biracial or multilingual people often make jokes that include references from both cultures but unless you understand all references the joke can fall flat.
    Ahead of Its time
This is one of the best novels I have ever read, utilizing language to the fullest capacity, interweaving the tale of Theseus with facets of a young woman in search of her father Ross is one of the best examples of a writer exploring humanity with all of its intricacies and nuances in mind. The introduction by Harryette Mullen is also excellent and very thoughtful. This book bares down on the everyday while propelling what it means to be alive forward, rich with energy and pursuit Oreo is absolutely a delight. This book would be a great addition to a curriculum in modern literature or poetry classes, much more rich, imaginative and wondrous than many of the books I've read as of late. I suggest you pull out a Yiddish Dictionary, a Mythology Reader, blank paper with a pen (to answer the questionnaires) and a box of tissues because you will be crying with a combination of trouble and joy!
    Oreo by Fran Ross
A brilliant, funny, insightful poignant book about race, gender, religion and social/cultural identity.
Comics could take any number of passages for "stand-up" routines today.
I read it for a class at UCLA and give huge credit to the people
who rediscovered this book. It is sad that Fran Ross passed away
before her book got the attention that it deserves.
    Four Stars
Great book about multiracial identity and self discovery. Full of humor and humanity!
A true original. Funny, complex protagonist.
Fun read with a wonderfully complex protagonist in Oreo. Loved the scene when she battles the pimp and his most equipped man - Oreo saves herself and helps out the pimp's prostitutes like a superhero, her vagina protective gadget a hilarious, inventive surprise. Ross was a true original.

    Publisher's Summary:
With its dark legends and passionate history, the windswept shores of Scotland are an archaeologist's dream. Verity Grey is thrilled by the challenge of uncovering an ancient Roman campsite in a small Scottish village. But as soon as she arrives, she senses danger in the air. Her eccentric boss, Peter Quinnell, has spent his whole life searching for the resting place of the lost Ninth Roman Legion and is convinced he's finally found it - not because of any scientific evidence but because a local boy has seen a Roman soldier walking in the fields, a ghostly sentinel who guards the bodies of his long-dead comrades. Surprisingly, Verity believes in Peter and the boy and even the Sentinel, who seems determined to become her own protector...but from what?

    Four stars
I love me a good time-slip novel, and Susanna Kearsley writes some of the best. This one involves an archeological dig of a site that may have belonged to the lost IX legion. Since no one has any idea where the IX Legion served, southern Scotland is as likely as anywhere. This particular site is a private dig, paid for by a wealthy man. His grandson sees and hears things that may be Latin, and an individual he calls the Sentinel.
This is the framework for this romance between a female archeologist and a local man, and seeing how they work it all out is part of the fun of a Kearsley novel.
    Worth 6 stars!
Everything about this book draws you into it's mystery. Good, great main characters, secondary characters who support the story and a story I really want to be real. Ms. Kearsley does not disappoint.
    Lives intertwined
Lives intertwined some with different intentions pull you in to share life's twists, turns and hidden truths. The story is told with details about a working archaeological dig in progress on top the cliffs over looking the sea with the lives of a Scottish fishing village in the mix.
    Excellent Book
I just finished this wonderful and interesting book during Hurricane Irma. Oh my, if I could write like this.
Kudos to Susanna Kearsley. May you never stop writing!

    EXCELLENT PAGE TURNER
I am in the process of reading all of Susanna Kersley's books and each one has been enjoyable. This book was no exception and kept me engrossed from the very first page. The Shadowy Horses combines some of my favorite subjects: archeology, Scottish history and romance. Verity Grey, an archeologist who most recently worked for the British Museum, has been hired by Peter Quinnell, an aging archeologist who has fallen out of favor, to work on a dig on his property. Peter has spent most of his career looking for the lost 9th Roman Legion which is one reason that he is no longer respected by his colleagues and now he believes that he has found their final resting place on his property in Eyemouth in the Scottish borderlands. Peter is basing this belief on the reports of a clairvoyant child, Robbie, who sees the ghost of a Roman Sentinel walking the grounds of Peter's estate. The story is rich in archeological facts, Roman history and interesting characters.

    Publisher's Summary:
Daniel Peterson's life was all planned out. His upcoming marriage would guarantee him the lifetime corner office in her father's firm, complete with the highest social standing, country club memberships...even golf lessons.
But then the phone rang. It seems the father he never knew has passed away, leaving him a tidy inheritance. To claim it, Dan is tasked with scattering his father's ashes, but under the most bizarre conditions and circumstances he could possibly imagine. This sends Dan on a wild, cross-country adventure of discovery - and self-discovery. As he comes to know his father, he is also forced to re-evaluate himself and all he holds dear. This is a heart-warming tale that redefines friends and family, and will leave you laughing with a tear in your eye.
    Members Reviews:
I didn't want this story to end...
It's rare I come across a book that connects with me so deep that I don't want it to end. My Father's Ashes is one of those rare gems. As someone who is estranged from my father, I connected with Dan Peterson in a deep and satisfying way.
The main character Dan discovers that the father he never knew has died. This leads him on a quest that helps him discover both who his father was, and as a consequence, discovers who Dan himself really is. The journey that Dan undertakes is both heartwarming and heartbreaking, and is spectacularly written.
There are times when the author goes into much detail about the actions: Dan opens the cupboard, takes out the bread, makes the sandwich, puts the bread back, etc. It seems at first way over the top, but then you realize that these little actions described in minutiae adds to journey itself. You are there for every single moment of Dan's discovery and it becomes a pleasant voyeuristic ride, like a fly on the wall.
The narrator was spectacular. I think Dave Cruse's folksy sing-song voice was perfect for this tale. Based on some irregular pacing and excessive mouth noise, it seems that editing was kept to a minimum, but overall I REALLY enjoyed his performance.
When the book ended I sat for a while contemplating what a masterful tale I had just listened to, and how I wished there were more content. I think another book could easily be written picking up right where this ended, but in a way, it's probably best to let your imagination envision what happened to Dan. Did he follow in his father's footsteps? Or did he pave his own way? It could have gone in either direction, and I'm still finding myself thinking of Dan wistfully, like an old friend I know I'll never see again, yet still wondering what became of him.
This audio book was gifted to me by the narrator at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review.
A Journey I would have loved to have gone on
What did you love best about My Father's Ashes?
My father passed away in 2009. I miss him every day. I knew my dad, unlike Daniel in this story. However I would have loved to have had a series of journey's to go on to learn my father, as he was beyond our family.
What was one of the most memorable moments of My Father's Ashes?
Daniel began to see similarities between himself and the father he never knew was nicely handled and I loved the transformation from going through the motions to living for the next adventure.

Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2016
An ingenious book from the exceptional Granta Best Young British Novelist
Nine men: each of them at a different stage of life, away from home, and striving - in the suburbs of Prague, in a cheap Cypriot hotel - to understand just what it means to be alive here and now.
Tracing an arc from the spring of youth to the winter of old age, All That Man Is brings these separate lives together to show us men as they are - ludicrous and inarticulate, shocking and despicable; vital, pitiable, hilarious, and full of heartfelt longing.
    Critic Reviews:
"This feels like a great novel driven by its overarching theme: what is my life, here and now, all about? Rarely has it been so brilliantly and chillingly spelled out." (John Harding, Daily Mail)
"There is everything to relish about this intelligent, moving, thoroughly European search for the meaning of life.... It's hard to imagine listening a better audiobook this year." (Melissa Katsoulis, The Times)
    Members Reviews:
    Full of empathy
Wonderful writing full of empathy for the flawed and unglamorous protagonists and their friends, colleagues and acquaintances. Often very moving and occasionally very funny. Acutely observant of the human condition.
Woeful men on the edge of a nervous breakdown
Makes you realise how few books you know where guys are relentlessly flawed and frail. Each story is like stepping into a nightmare in motion. With each main character imprisoned.
    Absorbing stories about modern man
Really absorbing, separate stories about men at different stages in their lives. Each is about man's challenges to fit into his world or to deal with his declining role. Each is philosophical and deep and sometimes comical.
The narrators are excellent. Great voices.
A strange but reflective and philosophical set of small stories. Note it's not a novel.
    Boring, predictable
When I read the summary of his book, I thought it might be interesting. It was not.
    Dull
If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
If you aren't looking for much plot or anything that moves at a pace, you may like this.
What was most disappointing about David Szalays story?
    It was boring.
What three words best describe the narratorss performance?
The narrator did an OK job, he just does' t have much to work with.
What character would you cut from All That Man Is?
It has left me cold. No character is a better description.
    Any additional comments?
I am confused as to how it got such a high rating.

    Great family Thanksgiving story!
I didn't feel so bad about my own family's Thanksgiving after reading this book. I laughed from beginning to end
Clare, Ronnie, and Kate In Jeep--Too Much Turkey
It was fun being back with Clare and her sisters but there was just too much snarky business and why the turkey everywhere. It wasn't one of my favorite books by this wonderful author so I'm hoping for a full size novel soon. Chester was his usual funny self but the other characters seemed to be more out of sorts than usual. They spent the whole story in a jeep with a wild turkey??? Grady the sheriff was huffy and overly macho. It just wasn't my favorite. I'll be back for the next novel. I like Ann Charles. I listened on audible so that made it better than it would have been in text I think.
A fun and quick read for the thanksgiving holiday
With little to no options for a fun thanksgiving read, this quick jaunt fits the bill for an entertaining thanksgiving read. The zany characters do a great job of illustrating how all of us have "interesting" family dynamics that make us crazy sometimes...but also draw us together in love. The book has several good laugh out loud moments. Lisa Larsen does a fabulous job of voicing so many unique characters and bringing them to life. A warm and silly read.

Dr. Nikhil "Nic" Joshi had it all - marriage, career, purpose - until, while working for Doctors without Borders in a Mumbai slum, his wife, Jen, discovered a black market organ-transplant ring. Before she could expose the truth, Jen was killed.
Two years after the tragedy, Nic is a cruise ship doctor who spends his days treating seasickness and sunburn and his nights in a boozy haze. On one of those blurry evenings on deck, Nic meets a woman who makes a startling claim: she received Jen's heart in a transplant and has a message for him. Nic wants to discount Jess Koirala's story as absurd, but there is something about her reckless desperation that resonates despite his doubts.
Jess has spent years working her way out of a nightmarish life in Calcutta and into a respectable Bollywood dance troupe. Now she faces losing the one thing that matters - her young son. She needs to uncover the secrets Jen risked everything for; but the unforeseen bond that results between her and Nic is both a lifeline and a perilous complication.
Delving beyond the surface of modern Indian-American life, acclaimed author Sonali Dev's pause-resisting novel is both riveting and emotionally rewarding - an extraordinary story of human connection, bravery, and hope.

Omg i've been waiting for this book for MONTHS!!! I had to re-listen to the first two books about a thousand times. Lol. This book did not disappoint. I took my time reading it, and i still feel like i finished it too quick!!! When is the next one coming out???
    Narrator elevates this Great Story
I'm a big fan of Sonali Dev books. Soneela Nankani's reading brought to life the exotic locales and accents. Great narration for an amazing story.
realist scenario but some repeating of theme
interesting current day plot but became repetitive as characters dealt with same emotions again and again. could be a more developed plot.
    Somewhat disappointing...
Rarely do I exclaim out loud: "really??" While listening to a story, but did more than once here. The story was pleasant enough, but parts were simply preposterous and there were logic leaps throughout. Further, some parts had far too much detail (sex and rape scenes could rival detail of 50 shades of grey!) while other parts and/or characters were not developed nearly enough. I love books based in or connected with other cultures and I felt that there were opportunities here to provide context and color that were left on the table.
    Tedious
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Having the story move along more quickly. Each time there was a significant event, the author retreats once again into "adorable dimples or caramel skin". I found myself turning it off in exasperation until I simply could not listen to it any more.
Would you ever listen to anything by Sonali Dev again?
    Probably not
What three words best describe Soneela Nankanis performance?
    very good dialects
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Sorry, could not even finish it.
    Any additional comments?
I feel guilty slamming this book because I am sure others will like it. Just not my cup of jardeeling.

Publisher's Summary:
A son receives an inheritance from his father and tries to dispose of it before it destroys him. Inherited Disorders tells this elemental story in over 100 hilarious, witty variations.
Adam Ehrlich Sachs's Inherited Disorders is a rueful, absurd, and endlessly entertaining look at a most serious subject - the eternally vexed relations between fathers and sons. In a hundred and seventeen shrewd, surreal vignettes, Sachs lays bare the petty rivalries, thwarted affection, and mutual bafflement that have characterized the filial bond since the days of Davidic kings.
A philosopher's son kills his father and explains his aphorisms to death. A father bequeaths to his son his jacket, deodorant, and political beliefs. England's most famous medium becomes possessed by the spirit of his skeptical father - who questions, in front of the nation, his son's choice of career. A Czech pianist amputates his fingers one by one to thwart his father, who will not stop composing concertos for him. A 19th-century Italian nobleman wills his ill-conceived flying contraption - incapable of actual flight - to his newborn son.
In West Hollywood, an aspiring screenwriter must contend with the judgmental visage of his father, a respected public intellectual whose frozen head, clearly disappointed in him, he keeps in his freezer. Keenly inventive, but painfully familiar, these surprisingly tender stories signal the arrival of a brilliant new comic voice - and fresh hope for fathers and sons the world over.

    Never a wasted word
So good. As soon as I read a few of these short stories in n+1 magazine, I pre-ordered the book. Book finally arrived last week, and I wasn't disappointed. Only downside was the weird looks I kept getting from my wife as I giggled. I would just shake my head and point at the book. These stories are very short -- sometimes just a paragraph -- great for when you don't have extended reading time. While re-reading many of them, I found they were so short because there is never a wasted word. Just tight, brilliant writing.

    Love!
    Truly enjoyable!
This book was a total surprise. The subtitle is {Stories, Parables & Problems} and I am a real lover of short stories so figured I'd give it a try. They're not really stories though - they're "reports" of incidents, histories, "problems", events, etc., all involving fathers and sons and sometimes THEIR fathers and sometimes THEIR fathers going back (or coming forward) 4 or 5 generations. All of this done in very short "news item" type writing. Some of them are a half page long and done. At first, I kept checking the jacket, reviews, etc., to make sure they weren't something that had actually happened. But no, they are just all flowing out of what is clearly the very inventive, clever, knowledgable, and comedic brain of Mr. Sachs.
It's a nice book to dip into instead of just read cover to cover. In fact, I don't think it would be as good if one DID read too many of the little items at a sitting. It sits in my reading stack and I read another 4 or 5 pieces in between my other current reading. It certainly does make me wonder how he came up with so many, many different scenarios for his theme.

As a journalist Paxton Andrews would experience Vietnam firsthand. We follow her from high school in Savannah to college in Berkeley and then to work in Saigon.
For the soldiers she knew and met there, Vietnam would change their lives in ways they could never have imagined. For the men in her life, Vietnam would change their lives in ways they could not escape or deny. Peter Wilson, fresh from law school, was a new recruit who would confront his fate in Da Nang. Ralph Johnson, a seasoned AP correspondent, had been in Saigon since the beginning. He knew Vietnam and the war inside out. Bill Quinn, captain of the Cu Chi tunnel rats, was on his fourth tour of duty, and it seemed nothing could touch him. Sergeant Tony Campobello had come to Vietnam from the streets of New York to vent a rage that had followed him all the way to Saigon.
For seven years Paxton Andrews would write an acclaimed newspaper column from the front before finally returning to the States and then attending the Paris peace talks. But for her and the men who fought in Vietnam, life would never be the same again.

    hotel vendome
It's was a love story like most of Danielle Steele books. I could see that in the middle of the story it was going to have a happy ending. You could figure out that the fathers love for his daugther would end up giving her the hotel, cause she was his whole life before he got married. I would suggest this as a summer reading novel by the beach. I have read more interesting books from Danielle Steele that could not put the book down. One book was malice and another wanderlust. Loved those books. Have all her novels.
    Good Quick Read
Danielle Steel is one of my favorite authors. I have been a fan of hers and read many of her novels over the last 20 years. Suffice it to say, I am hooked. Many of my favorite books are written by her.
I recently finished her book, Friends Forever. Unfortunately, much of this current book did not engage me.
The story was about five friends who met in kindergarten and become immediate friends through their childhood, teen and college years. They dubbed themselves the Big 5, and became inseparable. The cast of characters included them, their parents, stepparents, and siblings.
What I did not enjoy about this book was the pacing. The book moved too fast, rapidly changing from scene to scene. It was quickly flipping back and forth through the characters through time as they advanced from kindergarten to college.
Much of the first half of the book was about the parents of the Big 5. This, in my opinion, made it very hard to get any true character development with many of the characters until the last 1/3 of the book. By this time, the story had quickly trimmed the cast down by moving rapidly through drug overdoses, suicide, and an accidental death, and funerals.
The overall message was about the risky lifeâs choices of this particular generation. The events in the story did affect the lives of the characters. Unfortunately, due to its fast pace, the reader did not have time to feel it. This book couldâve been so much more. And has a great story lineâWho didnât have the âBest Friendsâ in school.
I enjoyed the last third of the book when we finally were left with one main character and her struggles.
