Guylain Vignolles leads a dull and solitary life. He hates his job, and his only company at home is a goldfish. Every morning he takes the 6.27 to his tedious job at a book pulping factory. He hates his boss and his assistant, but he finds companionship with the factory's guard, an eccentric aficionado of classical literature.

As Guylain reads the diary, he finds himself falling love with its author....
This enchanting novel is a warm and funny fable about literature's power to uplift even the most monotonous of lives and how there can be dignity and poetry for even the most misunderstood.

Beautifully written - and performed flawlessly!

This book is all about books, words and overall the magic that language and literature easily bring into our own somewhat colorless lives. The language of this book is carefully used and placed just as notes on a symphony and the result is mesmerizing. Yes, the plot is nice and the story is cute and easy and definitely uplifting, but the language is the great protagonist of this book - and Mr. Cornicard's narration gives it absolute justice. Such a treat to the ears :)
    A man, a train, a journal.
Never have those three things been so enthralling, charming, or magical all in one book. Very good story. Give it a listen.
The narrator does an astounding job and adds to the French flavor of this story being that Stephen is himself, French.
Again, give a listen. Perhaps on a rainy day with some tea or, on a train ride :)
    The occasional misread
A fun, quirky story and I really like Cornicards accent. The subtle way he changed his voice for Julie and the old ladies was nice, too.
Due to reading difficulties, I read and listen at the same time and I did find a few small errors here and there: some misread words and unintoned questions. I found myself doing a double-take ever now and then but really no big deal!
    Charming French Fairytale
Spotted this in a train station as the book of the week, and glad I remembered to look it up on here. Deliciously narrated, Stephane Cornicard's voice is truly 'ear candy', and that makes this an audiobook worth purchasing over just reading the book.
This touching Paris-set vignette is highly reminiscent of the likes of Amelie: quirky, pleasant characters you cheer for because you recognise in them the basic human desire to be happy and fulfilled, and relate to their struggles along the way.

The government has surveillance on the group, a man undercover, and prepare to move in, to take out the terrorists before they can strike. But they lose contact with their inside man. And the cell vanishes into thin air, dispersing into the streets, armed and intent on completing their assault on London. Silly and
The most banal, shallow and superficial cast of entitled characters. This book has no values or lessons to impart, unless it's designer label recognition. I absolutely detested it. The narration is devoid of any emotion. The droning voice is the perfect accompaniment for the idiotic characters and situations however. The worst of the worst, in writing and in life.

    Great Travel Read!
If you could sum up Family Room in three words, what would they be?
This is a story that explores the changing nature of families, and finding a place of belonging, no matter your age. It's about growing up (again, applicable at any age), letting go of the past and making room for a present and a future based on what is, not on fantasy.
What did you like best about this story?
Of course, it's always great to spend time with Deirdre, the heroine, and travel with her through emotional (and also, in this case, physical) twists and turns. The movement of relationships from antipathy to compassion is well presented. There's just enough mystery surrounding motives to keep the reader engaged and wanting to find out more.
Which character as performed by Carin Gilfry was your favorite?
I really liked them all. Each in their own way, even those who were initially presented as self-serving or selfish, had aspects everyone could relate to. This is the hallmark of a good writer - making the reader root for the characters and wish them the best, no matter how foolish their behaviors might be at times.
    Any additional comments?
I listened to this book while traveling, and it was a great way to make the journey enjoyable.

    Publisher's Summary:
From one of our greatest living storytellers, a remarkable, gut-wrenching tale of love, duty, and peril set at the height of the Cold War.
In Safety Tips for Living Alone, Jim Shepard weaves the stories of four families whose lives are upended when the men go to work on a dangerous and isolated surveillance platform off the coast of Long Island.
After working his way up to captain, career serviceman Gordon Phelan is offered the command of Texas Tower 4--a wobbly "box over the ocean". Among the team of military personnel and civilians joining Phelan aboard the platform are Roy Bakke, Wilbur Kovarick, and Louie Laino--three strong and dutiful men trying to ensure better lives for their families. But when a powerful storm approaches the tower, the four men--and everyone onboard--must face their increasingly probable deaths.
In his introduction Joshua Ferris writes, "There's no better way to describe the experience of the reader of Shepard's reimagining of this forgotten, misbegotten episode in American history" than to say one is "moved and appalled".
    Members Reviews:
    Sweet and tragic
Shepard's story about the Tower 4 incident, though it's not "mind blowing" it is interesting. He gives those who have lost their lives in the event faces and stories, which is beautiful. My favorite thing about it was the writing style, it's very modernist and the story is told as if it's one long thought. If the story is ordinary, the writing makes it beautiful.
    good short read
I liked the way this was written, rather gripping, but was disappointed by how short it was. But it is a true story w/o embellishment. I must say when my husband asked what I was reading and I told him, he must have thought I was trying to give him a hint of some kind, so I made him read it. He said the same exact thing-too short but very gripping.
    short fiction must read!!!
Just an excellent story from Jim Shepherd. If you like short fiction you will like his work. Short fiction based around a historical event. Every sentence has meaning. Very sad story about very brave people.
    Quite a surprise
This book was not at all what I was expecting, but it is an interesting account of a disaster with which I was completely unfamiliar. The emotions of the men on the doomed Texas Tower and of their terrified and desperate wives are portrayed well. A good story!
    Three Stars
Interesting how the story was named. An epic tale.

    Wicked and Wild Read
Would you recommend Kill Your Friends to your friends? Why or why not?
This novel really nails the darker perspective of life. The main character is the worst and the best all at the same time, making you wonder if you're just as insane as he is. The 90s flare of music and references isn't a bad touch either.

    Great story, disappointing narration.
I loved this book. It was a very heartbreaking story on so many levels and I found myself very involved with the characters. I found Noah Taylors performance disappointing, primarily because so often he would swallow the ends of sentences and it was really difficult to decipher the words even at the highest volume.
    Connect Only Connect!
This book is a fabulously engaging read, well written & satisfyingly executed. The main setting for the story is an island lighthouse off the south west coast of Western Australia. The physical elements of sea, sky and isolation are integral to the telling of the tale which explores the nature of love relationships and their impact for a lifetime. Against this backdrop of unusual physical isolation the author sets up the occurrence of events to illustrate the profound significance of human attachment.
    Beautiful story about love
This is a such beautifully written story about love for your partner and love for your children. I really enjoyed the scenery and all the characters. The story developed organically and I really enjoyed it!
    A tragedy waiting to happen.
What did you love best about The Light Between Oceans?
The idea that 'ordinary' people could do something so out of the ordinary.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Tom, he was such a tortured man in so many ways.
How could the performance have been better?
Noah Taylor is a great actor. He should stick to acting. As a narrator I found him frustrating...he would speed up the narration at the beginning of a new paragraph...then slow down and fade at the end of a sentence. And I swear I heard him yawn at one stage! If not for the engrossing story I would have given up after the first hour...but I had heard it was a good tale so I kept going. But his narration annoyed me right to the end. Sorry Noah...but stick to what you do best :)
If you could rename The Light Between Oceans, what would you call it?
    Janus.
    Any additional comments?
Audible...please re record this fabulous story with a different narrator.
    hauntingly beautiful never forgotten
Narrated by a most tender voice, I cried and couldn't stop wanting to hear more of this story. a young family caught up in a tragedy ,in a small Australian country town. It's a powerful story written and read in a gentle yet thought provoking way.

    Hooray for a happy ending
Given the date of publication, this is a remarkable work. As a romance, I appreciated there was little lingering over the legal technicalities, but mostly concentration on the development of the relationship between the two women. A great picture of America in the late 40s, and for me, perhaps inspiration for a great American road trip!
    Sublime!!!
I have just finished my second listen of this book, and have ordered the hard copy!
The story is captivating and emotional, the narration from Lisa Lefkow is incredible - so full of passion!
    This book is a must!!!
    Oh my.
Where does Carol rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    Top 5
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Carol. Different. Daring. Intense.
Have you listened to any of Laurel Lefkows other performances? How does this one compare?
    None.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    If only. Yes.
    Any additional comments?
I read this years ago and was drawn to it again after the film production was in the news. Its flow from tension to joy to despair dragged me along with it. I kept feeling like I was being punched, like I was nervous and terrified. I can't remember being caught up in a story like this for a long time.
The afterword by Patricia Highsmith is an education in itself.
Great if you want more after the movie
I really enjoyed this audiobook, the narration specially made listening to it fun and lively. I loved the story as a gay person myself, to recognise and compare feelings that are rarely acknowledged in novels of this kind (historical by someone of that time). And after listening to the whole thing I did hold back tears during the conclusion and my heart grew two sizes from happiness.
My only criticism of the story would be that the main character Therese is a big dramatic weirdo, who cannot stop being grandiloquent for more than ten minutes even while pondering about flowers, cars or old people. But it really comes off as a fully integrated and intended part of the character and not as a writing style flaw. It just leaves you smiling, "oh my god Therese calm down".
Loved, loved, loved this book. Narrated perfectly by Laurel Lefkow.
I was totally engrossed in this book right from the beginning. My favour audible yet.

    Funny, Poignant and Insightful
If you could sum up The Rosie Effect in three words, what would they be?
    Bloody Brilliant Read.
What does Dan O'Grady bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He brings to wonderful deadpan life the voice of an esteemed Geneticist with Aspergers, living in a world that doesn't always make sense to him but who is so sincere and so well educated and so well intentioned that he is instantly loveable.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed out loud many, many times reading this. As someone with an autistic teenager in the family, it was an acute and tender observation of this social 'disability' that was sweet and hilariously accurate.
    Any additional comments?
Highly recommend both books in this series to anyone who needs a laugh. That it offers acute insight into Aspergers is a bonus.
    Dan O'Grady is perfection
The Rosie Effect follows on from The Rosie Project, and as I enjoyed the latter very much, I didn't wait too long to listen to the second book. I am still undecided about how much I liked The Rosie Effect. Like the first book I chose to listen to the audio version because Dan O'Grady totally nails the narration. To me he is the voice of Don Tillman! His voice, his phrasing and emphasis on certain words just brings this story so alive.
Don is totally thrown when he learns that he and Rosie are expecting a baby. He goes into meltdown. And when he has finished with that he turns to the practicalities of preparing a baby. He becomes an expert on the total nine months and all birthing possibilities. You don't want to know his version of a pram and cot. Neither would Rosie. What Don neglects to do is give Rosie the support she needs and fails to be involved in ways that Rosie sees as essential.
I wasn't that keen on the relationship between Don and Rosie in this book, except perhaps towards the end. The decision that Rosie came to in the course of events was something I felt might be inevitable.
