    Excellent!
What a story. Important read in French. Don't know about the English translation.
    Francais meiux que l'anglais
The English translation was good, the original French much superior.
    Four Stars
Very good book. Incredible people can still live like that in the 21th century.
    Five Stars
    book in excellent condition

    Publisher's Summary:
In order to stay human, Audrey has built a moat around herself; a moat of books, music, and dreams. It makes her different from the echoes: the sophisticated, emotionless machines, built to resemble and work for the humans.
Daniel is an echo - but he's not like the others. He has feelings he was never designed to have, and cannot explain. And when Audrey is placed in danger, he's determined to save her.
    Critic Reviews:
"Matt Haig uses words like a tin-opener. We are the tin" (Jeanette Winterson)
    "Poignant and thought-provoking" (The Bookseller)

    This could be our future.
I love Matt Haig. 'The Radleys' is wonderful and when I see somebody lingering over a copy of 'The Humans' in a bookshop, I can hardly resist the urge to implore them to buy it. I knew Echo Boy was aimed at the young adult market (alas not my demographic) but as this is Matt Haig I couldn't resist.
This story is set in the not too distant future. Global warming has taken a hold on the planet and people lead their lives supported by an army of robotic servants called Echos. Technology has advanced to a level that the Echos are beyond robots and the heroine's father is an anti technology activist caught up between two warring mega companies who are constantly pushing the boundaries with their new 'products'. Sound familiar?
This is an interesting story filled with imaginative details and interesting moral dilemmas. I did think it span slightly out of control when it ended up more of an action story rather than a cerebral experience. The narrators are undoubtably skilled but I thought their voices were wrong. The main characters are two teenagers and yet they sounded flat and middle aged and there was no sense of youthful vigour.
The story progressed to a satisfactory ending and it was an overall worthwhile experience. It's just tha I can't wait for Matt to write another book aimed at his more mature audience.
    Only ok
What aspect of Jane Collingwood and Thomas Judd s performance might you have changed?
To be honest didn't enjoy the narration of Jane Collingworth. Her voice grated a little and she was too clipped with the words she was reading.
    Any additional comments?
I am not sure if this is a book for teenagers rather than adults. Perhaps I should have found out before. I think perhaps aimed at the teens market.
    Matt Haig excellent as ever
I have enjoyed each and every book of Matt Haigs since I discovered his work here on audible. His books are mirrors to the soul. He has the ability to make traverse the entire range of human emotions. I would love a sequel to this book in particular.
    Not Matt Haig's best
I generally really enjoy Matt Haig's books, The Humans is one of my favourites, this one was an OK listen, but definitely not amazing. It did keep me hooked til the end though so I can't say it's not worth a listen.
    Future thinking
What made the experience of listening to Echo Boy the most enjoyable?
Another great read by Matt Haig. This book is not normally the kind of book I would normally read. However I was intrigued, and have read other titles by the same author. I really enjoyed listening to the Eco Boy and would recommend this to anybody who likes stories set in the future.

At the hospital a brutal scene is unfolding as a man who shares an intimate past with Julie begins to take his revenge. Throughout the ordeal Julie's estranged husband, desperate for reconciliation, sends out coded messages from the radio station where he is the well-known Voice of Midnight.
Five years in the making, Golden State is both a political thriller and a meditation on marriage, love, and loyalty. Like The Year of Fog, it is a page-turner with a philosophical bent.
    Critic Reviews:
"Nearly every feature of this mesmerizing novel is provocative, as Richmond explores the fragmented, hopeful lives of complex characters... Gripping, multilayered, must-read fiction." (Library Journal)
"Mesmerizing and intricate, Richmond's dissection of a California on the violent brink of secession from the nation provides the backdrop to her deeper inspection of the uneasy, fragile relationship between siblings...[a] riveting read." (Booklist)

    Fabulous !
What did you love best about Golden State?
I enjoyed everything about this book - the characters, the narrative, the story. Excellent narration by Kathe Mazur. She brought emotional resonance to the story. This is one of the best books I've listened to this year !
Timely Theme with a Very Interesting Story Timeline
Michelle Richmond is a very interesting writer who creates believable characters found in fantastic scenarios. Her writing is both entertaining and thought provoking.
    So so

    Title: For Myself Alone
Subtitle: A Jane Austen Inspired Novel
    Author: Shannon Winslow
    Narrator: Beverley A. Crick
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 38 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-02-14
    Publisher: Heather Ridge Arts
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 55 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
From the author of The Darcys of Pemberley comes a new story, straight out of the world of Jane Austen and told in a style reminiscent of her six classic novels. Set in nineteenth century Hampshire and Bath, For Myself Alone is the tale of Josephine Walker, a bright, young woman whose quiet life is turned upside-down by an unexpected inheritance. With a tempting fortune of twenty thousand pounds, she's suddenly the most popular girl in town. Yet Jo longs to be valued for who she is, not for her bank balance.
She cannot respect the men who pursue her for her money, and the only one she does admire is considered the rightful property of her best friend. Now, even the motives of her new fiance are suspect. Does he truly love her for herself alone? There's one sure, but extreme, way to find outif Jo has the courage to take it. For Myself Alone will appeal to those who long for more Jane Austen, for more stories like the ones she told written in the elegant language of her time. Just for fun, the author has sprinkled lines from Jane Austen works throughout the audiobook for fans to find.

I doubt Austen would like this much
Would you try another book from Shannon Winslow and/or Beverley A. Crick?
I don't think I'd try another Shannon Winslow novel if it's one in which she's trying to mimic Jane Austen. Beverley A. Crick's narration seemed better-modulated to a book for much younger readers.
Would you be willing to try another book from Shannon Winslow? Why or why not?
I'd try another book of Shannon Winslow's only if it were of a different genre, although I'm not sure which one.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Beverley A. Crick?
A narrator with a less Pollyanna-ish style would have given the book a bit more weight. Crick's style made it seem even more fluffy than it was.
Could you see For Myself Alone being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
No, please! There were too many points I felt were ignored legal and social realities for women of that period.
    Any additional comments?
This doesn't seem to be the same universe in which Dickens wrote Bleak House, or in which women's rights to property were severely limited by entailments, etc. Jo seems to behave too much like a 20th century woman in handling her affairs, in moving about socially, etc. The subplots with the suitors lack anything like the subtleties of Austen's handling. Therefore, to attach Jane Austen's name to it is, to put it very mildly, disappointing.
    No Jane
Shannon is a competent author but not a new Austen.
Starts too slow. Story too predictable. Good outcome.
    Last chapters carry the story

    1948 in Louisville, Kentucky
Post WWII in Louisville, just eight years before I was born, this is the Kentucky of my parents and grandparents era. A native Kentuckian, I was born south of Louisville, in Hardin County, but I spent many summers in Louisville with my grandma . . . and I know the places in this book well. This will be a hard book for many to listen to . . . a warning that the language is rough and indicative of the times and of soldiers coming back from the war . . . racial tensions ran high . . . I suppose that, in Louisville there were many "colored people" in 1948 . . . further south in Hardin County, I never even went to school with any until my junior year in high school when TWO sweet (and well accepted) young African Americans came to our school in the early 1970s. I learned a lot from this well written book, one of which was the treatment of Jews following the war. There is a deep compassion underlying the tough, Kentucky slang (which is both crude and amusing) . . . puts me in mind of my own daddy . . . a cultural slice of America in 1948, the good, the bad and the ugly . . .

    Members Reviews:
Classic murder mystery novel about Spiritualism
What made the experience of listening to The Red Lamp the most enjoyable?
Like all of Rinehart, this is a beautiful period piece. It was first published in 1925, when paranormal activity and seances were a craze; several writers used the fad as a plot device. The Red Lamp should be as well known as Dorothy Sayers's Unnatural Death, since psychic research and seances are at the heart of the novel and the mystery, and not incidental, as they are in the Sayers book.
Have you listened to any of Gary Dikeoss other performances before? How does this one compare?
Dikeos has a voice that's an acquired taste, but he read this with intelligence.

    Members Reviews:
    Great disutopian novel
For those who enjoy considering alternate realities and disuptopian thrillers here is a book for you. The characters are fun, the ideas intriguing, and the concepts are scarily a real possibility. Though written in the 70s, this novel is still relevant.
Great vision of a libertarian revolution.
An interesting take on how agorism could work. The parallels to the current US economic situation and "deep state" are a little chilling. All wrapped in a Heinlein style adventure with a very mature teenage boy as the main protagonist.
    Enjoyable story
Recommended to me by a member of an Anarcho-capitalist FB group. Entertaining and suspenseful yarn on the financial collapse of the US and the exploits of its teenage hero Elliot who must find his family. Short, with plenty of attention to detail, but pace never drags. Excellent narrator, changes his voice perfectly for each character.
    outline
This is an outline partially flushed out, rather than a completed work. Several interesting concepts, but poorly described.
And the narration is truly atrocious.
A Libertarian Dystopian Dream Come True.
What did you love best about Alongside Night - The Movie Edition?
The book is very intriguing and is the anti-Red Revolution.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Alongside Night - The Movie Edition?
I loved the scene where the characters are at a drug store and are able to buy all illicit drugs off of the shelves with no regulation and simple disclaimers. Fantastic!
What does Alex Noble bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
A decent rendition, but I found, at times a bit rushed.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Close. Two sittings.
    Any additional comments?
It appeared the narrator was a tad rushed at times, but overall I would highly recommend this book.

    Publisher's Summary:
Haruki Murakami is unquestionably Japan's leading novelist with his many works - fiction and non-fiction - consistently reflecting contemporary Japanese life while, unusually, sustaining an international appeal through a deeply human perspective.
Sputnik Sweetheart is his ninth novel, written in 1999, and tells the story of a young woman - Sumire, an aspiring writer - who falls in love with an older, successful businesswoman and wine expert, Miu. Their relationship is told through the eyes of Sumire's close (male) friend. It is a curious, mysterious tale, told with the compassion and quirkiness that is the hallmark of Murakami's writing. Translated from Japanese to English by Philip Gabriel.
    Members Reviews:
    Stunning story and narration.
Although I love all of Haruki Murakami's collection, because of its subtle beauty, I am very particular when choosing an audiobook of his novels. This one I love the most, mainly for the wonderful narrator: he vividly and expertly recreates a strange world of Murakami.
    Wonderful
Murakami seems to deliver beautiful stories so effortlessly. It's like listening to a great Haiku that lasts a long time. I loved this little indulgence, so beautifully crafted with such full characters and a delicious whimsy that is like McEwen at his best and Rushdie at his poetic standard. And all of this about something so mundane, yet so extraordinary as the disappearance of a treasured friend, a search and an ending. Of course, there are the recurring themes of loneliness and not fitting in and even a cameo cat. Simple and wonderful.
I'm not convinced about Adam Sims. I see he has read other Murakami and that he's got acting credentials from serious theatre in the UK. The latter intrigued me given the US accent he used for this performance. I like his men and I am indifferent about his women.
    must read
Can't stop listening until the end........cool wind blows from Greece while listening to this amazing story....

    Publisher's Summary:
When Fahey, once a great surfer, now a reclusive ex-con, meets Magdalena, she is running from a pack of wild dogs along the ragged wasteland where California and Mexico meet the Pacific Ocean - a spot once known to the men who rode its giant waves as the Tijuana Straits. Magdalena has barely survived an attack on her life and Fahey, against his every instinct, takes her in.
An environmental activist, Magdalena is engaged in the struggle for the rights of the thousands of peasants streaming from Mexico's impoverished heartland to work in the maquilladoras - the foreign-owned factories that line her country's border, polluting its air and fouling its rivers. She is passionate about her work, and perhaps has taken too many risks with her own safety.
    Members Reviews:
Interesting Characters, But the Issues are Not So Black and White
"Tijuana Straits" is an understated tale of environmental ruin and personal redemption along the wild, untamed border of California and Mexico. This is not so much a "surf noir" book like Kem Nunn's other novels "Tapping the Source" and "The Dogs of Winter." It is more of a novel about environmental impact on an area and its people.
Sam "The Gull" Fahey, former surf legend and prison inmate, lives in a trailer within walking distance of the U.S./Mexican border. He spends his days tending his worm farm, doing speed, saving indigenous birds and hunting down dangerous stray dogs for the bounty money. He surfs no more because his home break along the Tijuana Straits has long since been poisoned by the toxic runoff from factories based just on the other side of the border in Tijuana.
Magdalena is a smart Mexican woman, a survivor who saw her mother drowned by the Mexican government opening a dam's spillway to flood out shantytown residents to make way for new corporate development. She now works for a lawyer compiling evidence against toxic factories on the Tijuana side of the border. Magdalena's research begins to hit too close to home for the bad guys, who attempt to burn her files and then hire the horrific Armando to kill her. Magdalena is driven away from Tijuana by the murder attempt and she ends up being saved and nursed back to health by Fahey, a shell of a man himself. She convinces Fahey to help her, and sends him back down to Tijuana to retrieve her files. Meanwhile Armando is headed north across the border, looking for her with an aim to completing his unfinished business.
Nunn uses his skill as a writer to give depth to all of his main characters. Take the villain Armando for example. Armando is fearsome, yes, but he is no cookie cutter. We go back into his past to see what made him that way. He wanted to escape the poverty of his upbringing and become a boxer, but instead ends up working in a factory in Tijuana gluing leather covers onto car steering wheels. Armando finds a wife in the factories as well, but the fumes in their work environments are so toxic that their son is born with deformities and dies. Armando escapes his pain by sniffing glue and using various other drugs. When his wife finally leaves him he traces her to a woman's shelter where Magdalena volunteers and he ends up blaming her for his troubles.
One problem I had with "Tijuana Straits" is Kem Nunn's love of long sentences. Sometimes one sentence goes on and on for half a page or more, getting harder and harder to follow with each line.

    Good narration.
While the narrator did what I found to be a great job, I wasn't so taken by the story. It certainly had some interesting moments, but I think it just wasn't for me. It felt like a series of odd episodes in this man's life in radio, but had no overarching story line. And mostly, I just didn't find myself really caring about any of the characters in it. That being said, someone else might love it.
