A Dangerous Love Story

A young woman gets herself involved into the middle of a rescue attempt to free some prisoners of a terrorist group.

Said young woman finds herself falling in love with the man the United States has brought in to lead the rescue, but she thinks he is one of the bad guys.

Sparks fly, chemistry is right and love develops.

The novel contains a good story line that holds the reader's interest. There are some sexy love scenes but not graphic to be considered erotica. Probably appropriate for persons 17 years and above.

Worst writing she has ever done. The concept was good, but the verbiage and the way the strife between the main characters was presented was just plain annoying. I've read plenty of her other books and really enjoyed them, but this one - not so much.

First book first rate!

Having been lost in the wilderness of boring books for a while it was fantastic to find a wee gem!

Had not heard of this author so I assumed that this is the first book well it's a belter.

The narrator was great and I will be looking for more by her.

The story centres on newly promoted DI McNab whose first case in the rank is a series of murders which appear to be an online game with a Druid backdrop. His love life is complicated but he clearly has links to the forensics specialist Rhona and the sexual tension between them adds an interesting dimension.

I loved the main characters and hope this is the start of a new Scottish detective series.

I also enjoyed the spiritualist angle which gave the story a paranormal spin not unlike Oswald's books Natural Causes etc

This is five star give it a go!

a twisty turney thriller

I enjoyed this story after nearly not continuing because of the bad language. This was a shame that it was felt needed. I would not recommend this to anyone I know because of this. However, if you don't mind the "c" word... The narrator was very good, hence the performance stars. I marked the story and overall down because I was disappointed in what could have been great without the strong language.

The Sleazy Inside View of the Political Process

I listened to the unabridged audio version and mostly loved it. I say, 'mostly,' because there are a few sections where politicos are talking shop that get a bit tedious. However, I found it worth the listen or read because it has great characters, an engaging love story, a protagonist with real integrity and, most of all, it gave me a mind's picture of just how sleazy and uncompromising the American political process has become. Maybe you already know the political process is sleazy as I did. But, as with me, if you haven't seen or heard a word picture of just how much crap goes on behind the scenes you can't possibly have an idea why candidates say the things they do or take the positions they take. As I said, the protagonist is a man of real integrity, someone who won't back away from the things in which he truly believes. I liked that about him. I liked that he was willing to risk it all for the sake of someone he loved. But I have serious doubts that such a person would even become a top contender for the presidential nomination in the Democratic Party. And this particular protagonist with his particular convictions wouldn't have a snow ball's chance in hell of becoming a top contender for the Republican nomination. So it's a novel that tells the truth about the sleaze while, at the same time, proposing a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination that is purest fantasy. I wish it weren't so.

A Truly Informing Novel

It saddens me to read a book like this that clearly delineates how politics can become and probably are. It's so real that you'd wonder about which politicians with their wealthiest contributors and election managers played the parts. I've always believed we should rid ourselves of the electoral college in favor of the popular vote and this novel gels that opinion.

Moving story, beautifully written

This book is about war on a very personal level. It's about how ugliest human death and gore became so commonplace in the daily experience of soldiers in WWI that it desensitized those in the midst of it, and later kept them from being able to face thinking of or speaking of it again. It is about the emotional and mental changes young soldiers had to go through as they struggled daily with mass killing at "trench level," unprepared by anything in their lives up to then.

In this story, death and chaos are juxtaposed in the minds of the young men with thoughts of their families at home--people who can have no idea of what is being experienced by the beloved young people they sent off to war--in some cases because those young people protect their families from the truth by not telling them.

It explains why even now so many who have been to war can never really go home again, because the experience of war can change and ruin young lives well before it takes them in death.

The descriptions gradually introducing these young men to the reality of life and death in the trenches are horrific and heartbreaking. As their growing friendship and love for each other enriches them, we realize it is born less of similarities in their upbringing than of their shared experience and profound change--in the midst of daily slaughter and futility, they understand each other as nobody else ever can.

The building of this story of the deepest sadness and loss and love brought me to tears.

I was very much touched by this book.

Stunning

A beautiful, transcendent novel about the underbelly of war (WWI), and the friendship and love that sometimes grows. Because the novel takes its time, its power in revealing the sorrow, folly,, and sometimes transcendence of 'the human condition' will remain with me.

Strange book

I loved detective series, but this book was so different that I didn't mind it was short. I could see the intention but it was laboured.

A rare and intimate account of life at the Front.

A wonderful book and so sensitively read. WW1 comes relentlessly to life as the appalling suffering and useless waste of a generation is described. And the unbelievable stoicism and bravery of ordinary men. This is a keeper, worth listening to again.

Beautiful story. Beautifully read. Just.Well done.

I think both versions are just superb. I loved the printed version. Every time I finish the book, I find myself going back to the beginning to start reading it again.

As outrageous as anyone could hope

Burgess projects himself into the mind of a young, black, gay man who discovers that he has a sister, takes a trip on a yacht to Latin America, gets shot at, discovers a bunch of moldering old paintings he thinks are worth a fortune, and learns that he and his sister are the incestuous offspring of their father's relationship with HIS sister. As always with Burgess, the language is astonishing. Supposedly the book has a carefully-worked-out architecture of symbols and themes with a musical underpinning. Maybe: knowing Burgess, it's probably so. But short of working all that out, it's an enjoyable listen and a fascinating yarn. Jack Hawkins, the narrator, is excellent.

Forgetable

I am sad to say that this still isn't Carey at his best ("Oscar and Lucinda", "Jack Maggs") but pleased to say it is a step up from "His Illegal Self". In plot, it has some truly interesting ideas associated with that quintessential Australian fascination with the Dismissal (akin to say, Watergate in the US or the Cambridge spies in the UK), but those ideas don't really go anywhere. The same might be said of the Angel Worm virus that has Wikileaks like potential. Accepting that the Dismissal of the Whitlam-Labor government is a backdrop to the title reference, and the virus is a device to unite the two principals, their partially shared story just does not make enough of the interesting potential plotlines.

On top of this, Carey continues to pepper his narrative with Oz idiom. Sometimes this works and adds to the flavour of the language, but mostly it seems forced to me and made me cringe. This was made worse by Colin Friels' reading. I love Friels as an actor, but this just does not work in my opinion. First, it is a reading. There is no personification, although there is dramatisation. Secondly, the ocker is just too ocker, even allowing for the 1970's derivative for the action, albeit that nearly all of the action takes place in the Noughties.

I'll keep persisting with Carey because I love some of the earlier work. If you've not read them, then you might be more generous than me about this title. Me, like the protaginists in this title, I'll keep hoping for a better time.

Very much enjoyed Amnesia

I rated it midway because it got a little technical for me especially the computing. Moreover, the story became somewhat confusing I thought but then I wish I could write like Mr Carey. I did enjoy it and it is a 'page-turner' so to speak.

Another Fabulous Novel from Peter Carey

What made the experience of listening to Amnesia the most enjoyable?

The reader, Colin Friels, had a true Aussie accent without being overly hard on the ear, and that true accent lent authenticity to Felix who could only have been an Australian character. They don't breed his type anywhere else.

Who was your favorite character and why?

For sure it was Felix - flawed yet determined, cowardly yet honourable. Gabby got on my nerves, which she was supposed to do, being a self-centered teenage girl. It's a great portrayal of an annoying adolescent. Carey could only have written this character from first-hand experience.

FREEDOM IS A FICTION

Carolyn Chute paints a picture that implies freedom in society is a fiction. Treat Us like Dogs and We Will Become Wolves gives definition to American militias and aberrant societies that grow into rages against conventional government. In any aggregate of people in a society, a set of rules are created through dictatorship or representative government, with varying levels of individual apathy. Each society uses propaganda, advertising, and cultural norms to maintain its existence. If general acceptance of societies rules diminishes, totalitarianism rises.

Chute writes a story that shows how human cognition militates against society based on a Pavlovian reward system. Though the title is about bad treatment of dogs, Chute metaphorically reveals how Pavlovian treatment of human beings turns them into predatory beasts. Chute implies societies leaders, influencers, and propagandists attempt to treat people through self-interest and a reward system reminiscent of B. F. Skinners theory of operant conditioning. Failure is inevitable because humans rebel when self-interest distorts the general good.

"Treat Us like Dogs..." reinforces belief in Thomas Hobbes Leviathan. There can be no perfect form of government in society because of the nature of humankind. Humans are both good and evil. To form a society, people need rules of governance that protects them from each other. In setting those rules, freedom is infringed upon; without infringement, there is only anarchy. Absolute freedom in society is a fiction.

Chutes story is too long.
