I love the way that CJ Box writes

I love the way that CJ Box writes, and his protagonist, Joe Pickett, has become one of my favorite literary heroes. Box develops characters very well, particularly Pickett and Nate Romanoski. His understanding of the culture, values and physical qualities of Wyoming enables the reader to enter into the story. You can almost feel the cold in the air and on the ground, smell the campfires and traces of wildlife, see the majestic mountains and pristine streams. There is just enough pace to keep the reader engaged, while not abandoning the development of each of several subplots. I love action and good vs. evil, and the villains in Box's books are despicable, and deserve everything that happens to them. In "Force of Nature", John Nemecek, is as bad as they come. This sociopath is the complete antithesis to Joe Pickett, and even to Romanoski in his own way. Box paints a picture that emphasizes the reality of life in the wilderness - where independence, respect for all living creatures and for freedom and the personal rights of other , appreciation of and love for the natural world, the values of honesty and hard work, and the harsh realities that there is greed and corruption in the world all collide.

Can You Believe It?

I read C.J. because he is outdoorsy. A welcome relief from private eye's and ex Special Forces supermen rescuing nukes from ISIS and saving POTUS' life. But C.J. is hard on believability. In this version, Joe Picket does his own thing, which is OK to a point. Predictably he irritates conventional law enforcement, but then calls the FBI and the Sheriff at the last minute to send SWAT and bail him out. He tells them, "Trust me." They do. I don't. Then there is the ex-Delta anti-hero Nate, who kills people with a .50 caliber, 5-shot revolver - probably the worst choice ever in a defensive sidearm due to bulk, recoil and 5 round capacity. Nate also has a house in the wilderness with lots of cameras and perimeter detection but no mention where the electricity comes from. Still, it's readable if you don't notice these things and just enjoy that the story is outdoors, about fairly ordinary good guys and bad guys, (except the governor is starting to replace POTUS in these) and don't require that your protagonist be politically effective.

Great read

Finally found a CJ Box book I haven't read. Loved it as I do all of his. Nate Romanowski is my favorite character in the Joe Pickett series and you finally get to see some of him. Try it you'll like it.

Fast paced.

I really enjoy CJ's fast paced Pickett/Romanowski books. Botany to read them as fast as I can....but I don't want to be done.

Some what boring and repetitive

Listened to the first 4 chapters and while the narrator was pleasant enough, the story line was boring. The author told the reader her character lost her job so many times that I felt like yelling "get over it!!!" There was no real story to get your teeth into - only how loosing her job made our heroine rethink her boring life. Well enough for me as I like a bit more depth to a book so I'm deleting it.

Cecelia Ahern does it again

I've loved all of Cecelia Ahern's books for their quirky, feel-good story lines and her latest offering does not disappoint. Listening to the book as I drove to and from work each day, my 50 minute commute disappeared in an instant as I was drawn into the very satisfying story and great narration.

A different kind of relationship story

What made the experience of listening to The Year I Met You the most enjoyable?

It was surprising. There were turns to the story I didn't expect and that kept me returning to the book as often as I could! I didn't foresee the way it would go from the title.

I also really enjoyed the narrator's Irish lilt

No I haven't heard Remie read before but would look out for her narration in other books.

Not a love story but a "good friend" story between a man and a woman whose relationship changes and improves over one year.

An enjoyable listen

Where does The Year I Met You rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

I did really enjoy this audio book, it was great to listen to during commutes, however I did find it a little slow in places and occasionally I found that difficult to follow on short journeys. So although I did really enjoy the story once I got into it, I wouldn't say it has been my favourite to listen to.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Year I Met You?

I would say highlighting Down Syndrome, it has been the first audio book I have listened to, to promote disability in the way this book did.

What does Remie Purtill-Clarke bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

I loved how the characters were bought to life. The accents are great in the story and the characters were easy to distinguish.

A great tale of south Texas

A wonderful told story of the old west with great characters and detailed scenes of the area where you could just see the cactus and the heat with danger all around with a pretty good romance thrown in, you won't be disappointed.

An Enjoyable Old-Fashioned Novel

Rex Beach was a best-selling novelist during the first several decades of the last century. Best known for his first work, The,Spoilers, a novel about the Gold Rush to Nome in 1900, Beach's many subsequent novels have been, in the words of several literary specialists, "merifully forgotten." Heart of the Sunset, published in 1915 and set in northern Mexico and Texas's Rio Grande Valley is one of those later books. Formulaic and loaded, it is filled with a slew of "bad guys," a brawny and heroic Texas Ranger, a ravishingly beautiful love interest and who knows how many other cliched characters. Will Dave get the girl or will the evil Mexican General Longorio win the day? Will justice triumph and love conquer all? Three guesses.

No-one reads Rex Beach today looking for great literature. He was a product of his times, giving an anxious public exciting contemporary stories to suit their reading tastes. Today's more sophisticated readers, on the other hand, will find little to draw them to this work but personally I enjoyed it a lot. Heart of the Sunset is enjoyable kitsch and a fun read to wile away a few hours.

What is the point?

I just finished this book and I am so annoyed. Ive never read/listened to a book with such a garbled, confusing, disappointing ending.

I first purchased the Kindle book a few months ago and I enjoyed the beginning; it had a foreboding sense to it and introduced the ghost right away. Each chapter was peppered with relatable, human moments between the two couples. The subject matter concerning Rebecca and John and their emotional estrangement from each other during their marriage made me cringe as I read it, because it was so human in regards to them having an imperfect relationship; how Rebecca would push John away until he shut down, then she would yearn for him to forgive her and wait for him to come back around almost entirely before she cut into him again, causing the cycle to repeat. She was very cruel but in some ways I felt I could relate to her. In others, I felt she was a selfish idiot.

After a few weeks of reading the Kindle book, distractions of life caused me to forget about it until I saw that it was on sale thru Audible for the whispersync aspect. I purchased it for $4.49 with the idea that Id get through the audible version quicker than the book.

So that was two days ago and as I said I just finished it. And Im SO glad that I didnt have to spend precious free time over the next few months trying to finish the book, only to be met with the mess that is the last few chapters.

Another reviewer stated that they didnt know what the author was trying to do. I totally agree! While I was listening to the end of the book I was actually getting angry at how ridiculous it was. Id like to know if anyone actually follows the chapter on Rebecca at the end? After the conversation with the magician and Frau, and the events that occur afterwards with the horse and carriage I was mentally done with this book. It lost me.

Great characters!

I love listening to Alisa's work come to life through the narrator's voice. as the characters come to life, it's easier to stay engaged and to binge through her work!

The main character is blinded by love. You get pulled into her angst. The wonderful reading by the narrator makes you feel every wrench, all her excitement and her confusion.

These stories are simplicity itself. Each one is a short, elegant vignette on the dance of loss and longing. The characters are caught in a snapshot that exposes the depth of the pain their heir hearts. The settings invoke histories of national pain. The reader at first puzzles the accolades accorded this collection. Then, completing the first story, a haunting sense informs of the emotions evoked and the mystery of regard is made clear.

Levitating Prose

Levy writes with a distinctively light touch, prose that almost seems to levitate (no pun intended) above the weightier substance of what her stories discuss. If you are looking for a clear storyline, you might be disappointed. Levy's writing is more about capturing a mood, a space in time, and a sense of an idea.

In this collection of 10 stories, the reader comes across a variety of characters, some that would more probably be standing in the margins of a conventional story, rather than right smack in the centre of a narrative. In the titular story, an advertising executive with a hump on his back, flirts with a colleague's date at a launch with the single aim of bedding her. Uneven quality, interesting read

As a fascinating glimpse into Chinese culture and mindsets, I would recommend this collection to anyone with a taste for the exotic. The stories here are set in different historic time periods, from two or three centuries ago, up to the present. One thing that struck me rather strongly was the enduring sexism that was so evident both in the stories and in the choice of authors: only three of the twenty are women. It came as no surprise that they were among the strongest stories - they pretty well had to be to get past the selection committee, which had an obvious bias for older males. Of course, this is also a part of Chinese culture - the reverence and respect for age, so foreign to our contemporary Western culture, but rather difficult to criticize. This also came through in several of the stories, in which older people are never referred to with contempt and often with open reverence. Seeing as I'm on the downhill slope of middle age myself, I found myself rather liking the attitude.

And of course, when you have schoolchildren singing, without the slightest trace of irony: "I am a good child/ I love the Chinese Communist Party" you know you're really not in Kansas anymore.

On one memorable occasion, I literally hooted out loud, when one story opened with: "The art gallery has employed two kinds of people since the national reform: those who are too incompetent to survive the socialist market, and those who are too artistic to satisfy it." And that is as close to social criticism as you are going to get in this volume, but I loved the cheek of it.

All in all, though, it was an interesting read and a volume that will remain on my shelves.

Great Popcorn Fiction

The parts of the book that have to deal with movies, agents, actors interacting with other actors, the mechanical nature of love scenes and Hollywood deals are really entertaining.

But, the central, overriding question in this actresses life is, by today's standards, ho-hum. We never really get a good sense of what drives this woman to seek fame, how she, without seeming to care, screws over a lot of people, but still thinks highly of herself. Narrator kind of makes the woman a little too sympathetic, but she still does a great job.

Narrator is so good I thought there were three or four different people doing it and, like all the good ones, she keeps it moving along, even when it starts to drag.

Still, I spend hours in the car and, I must admit, this book made them fly by.

Tiresome Reading of Low Rent "Lolita"

His accent changed from sentence to sentence, and sometimes within the same sentence. At times it was American southern, and then New York-ish, and occasionally some kind of Western European. It was startling to hear the protagonist refer to himself as Dutch.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Summer House with Swimming Pool?

I would hand the manuscript back to Koch and tell him to return when he had something worthwhile to publish. Clearly Koch was keen to cash in on the success of his previous novel and dashed this off in one go.

A cynical story made worse by an insufferable, irritating narrator. A waste of time and Audble credit.

I found this to be a bit weird but at the same time a bit of fun. In all honesty it did have me quite captivated towards the end and I ended up enjoying it very much. Definitely give this a go.

When I say a little weird, I mean there are some parts of the story that I didn't find believable. The narrator is quite irritating, with a raspy voice that didn't do too well with switching from character to character during the dialogue. Also, he has a raspy voice that instantly got on my bosom.
