The titular miracle in this imaginative novel by Christine Lehner refers to one characters efforts to get a Nicaraguan woman sainted, but hagiography is only one of the places where the miraculous comes into play. Alice, whos lost her job as a radio-show dream analyst, is at home with a sick dog while her family goes on a spelunking vacation when her husbands college roommate, whos on the aforementioned canonical quest, comes to visit. Rachel Fulginiti performs the audiobook delightfully, embodying its protagonist and fashioning a variety of voices New England, Nicaraguan, feminine, and masculine. Sainthood is hard to achieve but so are marriage and dog care. Youll find the title taking on new meanings as Alice searches for a miracle.

Dictionary Ready?!

I enjoyed the use of language in addition to the plot line of this book. The two young boys remind me of my own daughter who loves to keep her grade-school classmates (and teachers!) reaching for the dictionary. The topics of Sainthood, Catholicism and marital infidelity are woven together yet approached in a very secular and nonchalant way. Although the topic is very religious in nature the characters are clearly not church-going types. For the most part I enjoyed the book but was put off a bit by the nonchalant approach to moral issues. I guess life was a little too "real" for my tastes in some ways.

Crazy fun

This book was a wacky trip. I enjoyed the use of language and the fractured plotline. It kept me reading just to see what would happen next. The infidelity was treated with nonchalance, very counter-intuitive, but refreshing. I enjoyed Alice's grudge-holding over many years toward the mistress of her husband. This is a reality for anyone who has been cheated on. Ms. Lehner is full of surprises and a wonderful command of the English language. I was going to recommend for my book club, but this book is a bit in left field for the mainstream audience.

Could have been so much better

This story promised so much but did not deliver. It was very slow to start to unfold then two thirds of the way through came to life, reaffirming my decision to stick with it, only to really disappoint at the end. Having listened to it all I don't feel able to return it, but it is one of the most disappointing books I have listened to, and that's from a library of over 60 books. Full credit to the narrators, they were excellent but the story just did not flow properly

If you like description then you will love this. Beautiful childhood memories that took me back, and issues I can relate to having suffered with an issue covered, it was done well, rushed at the end, but good

The author has gotten better with age/practice. I've read almost all of the Cooper stories and several of Mr. Bernico's short stories and none have disappointed me. They're great for a coffee break or a few minutes to relax.

Found a Penny

Penny is a meter maid who sometimes does double duty to help count and sort the coins when needed. This was how she became interested in coin collecting: she noticed some pennies had curved stalks of wheat on the back. Since she had been born after the switch to the Lincoln Memorial design she found the wheat pennies to be interesting.

Penny began collecting these wheat pennies by trading them for the other pennies in her purse. She would also trade out coins she carried for Buffalo nickels and mercury dimes. On more than one occasion Uncle Oscar (also a collector) had proven to be a great help when she had been about to get rid of some coins which had proven to be valuable.

Penny is home sorting through the day's coins and discovers a very rare and valuable penny. Then she learns someone is looking for the coin. What will she do?

(I read this in Two for the Price of One which was a collection of this story plus "Snap! Crackle! Kill!")

A GREAT short story! Made me smile remembering how we were always looking for, trading pennies in at banks, stores ---- looking for a treasure! Good read! Would be a great way to get someone interested in coin collecting and happy memories for all of us who collected pennies! (Plus the meter maids name is Penny)!!!

Read all the multi-packs and shorts packs long ago, since 2012. The author has gotten better with age/practice. I've read almost all of the Cooper stories (1 - 230) and several of Mr. Bernico's short stories and most have not disappointed me. You'll find some poorly written or predictable stories, but for the most part they are fair to good. The Cooper series are better, but there's a few stinkers, too. They're great for a coffee break or a few minutes to relax.

No harm in a little sleuthing is there?

Donna and Charlene are sipping cappuccinos and discussing the divorce rate. They agree that as bad as it is nationwide it has to be higher here in Hollywood. Definitely no place for a single girl to be looking for a husband. Which brings Charlene to ask Donna why she'd moved here.

While Donna admits part of it was a job offer, she also says that it was partly because of Charlene and her husband, Jerry. They seem to have something special, and Donna wants something like they have.

When Charlene confides that she and Jerry may soon be just another statistic, the girls hatch a plan to see if Jerry is fooling around as Charlene suspects. Donna knows a make-up artist who agrees to give her a new look. Then it is up to Charlene to see if she can pick Jerry up at the Gold Cup where he keeps telling her he is meeting clients.

Will Jerry fall for the sexy tart that "accidentally" bumps into him? Or is he really there just to meet with his client? Only way to know for sure, Charlene, is to take a deep breath and walk through that door.

A good read

I have read the author before, liked the last book better. Enjoyed the story and the characters. They return so I will read on as well.

Disappointed

I chose the book because of the good reviews and I am interested in the period. It caught my interest immediately, but then my interest waned as the story went on and I found myself taking frequent breaks from reading it. It was definitely not a book I wanted to read in one night. Not near as good as I had hoped.

Lovable heroes, despicable villians, interesting times...

This was my first exposure to a book by this author, and I was very pleased. The story covers a period of time interesting to me and in an area near my home. The heroes are good people with normal character flaws, and the villians are the kind of people you can easily hate. The story is tied in to real times and real events. The author is obviously very familiar with the Cheyenne Indians and the frontier during the latter 1800's. A spellbinding book.

Not a simple short stroy or is it? You Decided

I will have to be honest, I had to re-read the book several times over to find out what was going on with everything. So why the 5 stars for this book, it made me think and think hard. As a reader I have gotten so used to the writter just telling me the meaning of the stroy or the "catch" as I have come to call it. For example, so many fantasy books have gotten to the point of good fighting evil and good always win. A lot of excitment, fighting, death and the hummor, but that is it. Nothing for the read to set down and think for a minute of why the hero was going to go on this long quest just to miss not being home in front of the fire place wishing that he was just out and about and not really doing it. My point is, you need to think about what you are reading and think hard. I believe that other readers will not come to the same idea as I have but come to their own.

After reading the book several times over and finaily seeing what Eve was trying to get at, I started to see what she was seeing. I seen the old man I met in Afgain, when I went overseas the first time. I gave him a bottle of water and you would have thought that I just had given him the founatin of youth. I seen a child with a smile on his face when I went overseas again and handed him a MRE, I did not give him an endless supply of food,. They were happy with what they had and nothing more. No fancy cars, no fancy house, no slender dressed woman in a tight dress tryng to seduce them. Granted Eve did not want the mans money or his self pitty, but I believe she would have taken it if it was given out of the kindness of the heart and no strings attached.

I noticed my self in the book as well. I was not happy with with what I had untill I had everything under my control and did as a I wish. It was not untill went over seas and found my self, wanting my own statue on a street corner and being content with what I had. I think that ever person should read this book and think about what it means to them. Again I do not think this was the authers intent, but that is the message I got out of the book, be happy with what you have.

Over all a good short story and one that has several hints and meanings behind it. You just need to keep reading to find them all.

The People of Our Time

What is it about you Flannery O'Connor people? Must you focus on the trashiest people the world has to offer? What is your point?

There were three characters in this story. Each of them was vividly described, and in my opinion, accurate.

I liked it, honestly. I could actually see this sort of thing happening some day to some poor gullible idiot!

I recommend this story to others, because honestly, it is a good story.

A Page Turner

A Great Short Read

I really enjoyed this book. Its not filled with erotic 'page filler' non-sense but what I feel is a well written story with Christian values that are presented such that they do not 'preach' to the reader. This book had me crying and laughing. I think the subject matter of the real life situations that female war veterans face upon their return home hit me square in the face. It was touching story and I would love to see a series that allows the other female characters to have their own HEF. My only wish is if more details were added at the beginning of the story on how the main female character ended up in her situation (it comes toward the end). Overall a great short read and kudos to this author.
