Women of the Round Table

While I have only just began to delve into the delightful pages of this book, I can attest already that it is nothing which paints a portrait of weak minded, dependent females. Rather is celebrates the strength of womanhood in its rendering of women of all ages who come together and give support, strength and loyalty to others, often above and beyond the call of duty, going so far as putting aside their own needs many times. This made me recall all the women in my life who have been there for me, helping from the first breath I took on my own and throughout my entire life thus far...giving me comfort as needed, prayers as needed and helping me realize my own confidence and self worth. It is a lovely book written by women praising the women who have touched their own lives in some way; about mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers and friends. If you are a woman, you will love this book and if you are a man, you may learn something very valuable. I say that last with sincere respect for the Men of the world and love in my heart for the men who have touched my own life~

Not likely only because it's not a story that needs repeated listening, though I loved listening to the narrator.

Coming from a poor dysfunctional family I had no extreme reaction to this book. I felt strongly for the characters and their story and sometimes I felt like I was back home - in good ways and bad.

Adored the title of this book! It still makes me smile when I think of it. But this book was not a comedy in the slightest bit which is what I thought the title suggested. It was an honest story about a girl struggling to grow and thrive with a mother struggling to be a mother. It was a good read. I was interested the whole way through and loved listening to the narrator's voice. I will be looking for more from this author.

Well written story but I found the subject matter rather hard to take. Overall not my cup of tea, but mainly due to the subject itself no reflection of the writing or the performance.

Depressing realistic.

Excellent character development and insight. Ultimately an exploration of a harsh, realistic upbringing.

Avoid if easily depressed.

Pure escapism

What made the experience of listening to In the Summertime the most enjoyable?

Loved the Cornish holiday setting and the expressed feeling of renewal which is a strong undercurrent in the storyline. Easy to follow plot, and likeable characters all made for a very enjoyable listen.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Overall, I think Miranda was the character I grew most fond of - struggling with a diverse family and the death of her stepfather whilst wrestling her own daily life, emotions and memories.

Which character as performed by Julia Franklin was your favourite?

I think Julia Franklin portrayed Jess in a very positive way, conveying her strength of spirit and her staunch friendship with Miranda (and Andrew!) extremely well

Would you consider the audio edition of Goldblatt's Descent to be better than the print version?

I don't know - haven't read print version.

What did you like best about this story?

As a doctor myself, a little older than the author, I can completely relate to the story. Non medical readers may doubt its authenticity, but I can assure them that the story is genuine. (Current junior doctors should read & take note!) I listen to my audio books during my 40 minute walk to work and found myself repeatedly laughing out loud.

Which character as performed by John Telfer was your favourite?

I enjoyed them all.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Completely impossible.

I've seen criticism of the print book for being too long. I can appreciate this, but in the audio version I didn't find this a problem, although the story could cope with some robust editing.

When the narration is done in the way ones ears like it then it is just splendid. John Telfer is such a good performer. I loved all his different accents and the way he really put himself in Goldblatt's shoes.

The book made me laugh out loud more than once.. I love the way the little old jewish lady is described and JT's jewish accent..

Great narration, so-so story line

I enjoyed the narration of this audio book.

I felt there were too many characters to keep track of, but the story line was okay and the plot did keep a good pace. Just wasn't for me.

The audiobook is the only thing that saves it.

I was pretty disappointed in this book. I was hoping for a cozy mystery, but got more of a damsel in distress. Vickie is so clueless that she gets one person killed and nearly gets herself and another killed. Her determination to find her daughter's killer does not match her personality. The romance scenes are so awkward that I would have skipped them entirely if I hadn't been listening to the audio version. The writing was really clunky and created staccato sentences that broke up the flow of the book.

This is the second book I've heard narrated by Lee Ann Howlett. Once again, the pacing was slow and I had to turn it up to 3x speed. However, her characters are always distinct and varied and it is possibly the only good thing about this book.

The audiobook is the only thing that saves it.
