    Title: Foxlowe
    Author: Eleanor Wasserberg
    Narrator: Charlie Sanderson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 10 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-02-16
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
A chilling, compulsive debut about group mentality, superstition and betrayal - and a utopian commune gone badly wrong.
We were the Family, and Foxlowe was our home. There was me - my name is Green - and my little sister, Blue. There was October, who we called Toby, and Ellensia, Dylan, Liberty, Pet and Egg. There was Richard, of course, who was one of the Founders. And there was Freya.
We were the Family, but we weren't just an ordinary family. We were a new, better kind of family. We didn't need to go to school, because we had a new, better kind of education. We shared everything. We were close to the ancient way of living and the ancient landscape. We knew the moors and the standing stones. We celebrated the solstice in the correct way, with honey and fruit and garlands of fresh flowers. We knew the Bad, and we knew how to keep it away.
And we had Foxlowe, our home. Where we were free. There really was no reason for anyone to want to leave.
    Critic Reviews:
"Mesmerising, gripping and beautifully written. It completely sweeps you up from beginning to end. I loved it." (Kate Hamer, author of The Girl in the Red Coat)
"An extraordinary, astonishing story of a girl's longing for motherly love. Beautifully harrowing, and powerfully haunting, it is the most heartbreaking tale I have read this year." (Liz Nugent, author of Unravelling Oliver)
"I thoroughly enjoyed this vivid and claustrophobic coming-of-age debut." (Tasha Kavanagh, author of Things We Have in Common)
"Dissonant, haunting and superbly atmospheric. An immensely subtle and profoundly affecting debut." (Paraic O'Donnell, author of The Maker of Swans)

    Interesting...
Overall very much enjoyed this book - the story drew me in immediately and kept me interested throughout. Very interesting characters, compelling plot. Feeling a little let down by the ending though, which really is a disappointment considering how I was feeling right up until the epilogue.
The narration was good, though a couple times had a difficult time following which character was speaking due to the lack of contrast in dialogue narration (that said, much prefer this to over-blown voices). Also, the pronunciation of 'says' in the latter part of the book started to become grating.
All in all I do recommend the book and I'm sure I'll listen to it again in the future.
    Captivating
Poetic and powerful. The story is an eerie and fascinating combination of light and dark, complimented by great narration. A captivating novel.
best book for a long while
amazing character study that takes you in a very unexpected and haunting direction. beautiful writing.

    Title: The Breaking of Eggs
    Author: Jim Powell
    Narrator: Charles Armstrong
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 55 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-02-16
    Publisher: Orion Publishing Group
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
A panoramic debut about love and loss, The Breaking of Eggs announces a major new talent.
Change is in the air in a shabby apartment in the 19th arrondissment in Paris. One unremarkable day Madame Lefèvre invites Feliks to call her Sandrine. As his indomitable landlady's manners have been as unvarying as her dresses for the last 36 years, this feels significant to Feliks. And it is.
As the face of Europe transforms beyond recognition, Feliks' own life teeters on the edge of change. All it takes is one uncharacteristic decision, and suddenly an unstoppable chain of life-changing events is set in motion.
Feliks does not embrace change - in fact it makes him most uncomfortable. But as he's reunited with a brother he hasn't seen since his childhood and comes face to face with the love he let slip through his fingers, Feliks has to face up to the possibility that the convictions he has based his life upon were nothing but smoke and mirrors.
Soon his carefully constructed world is tumbling round his ears, and Feliks wonders: is there such a thing as a second chance for someone like him?
    Members Reviews:
The politics of humanity (and the occasional inhumanity of politics)
Feliks Zhukovski, the main character in Jim Powell's The Breaking of Eggs, is an ex-patriot Pole spending his life in Paris when he's not updating his guidebook to sights in Eastern Europe. A one-time Communist who now calls himself a leftist, Zhukovski has seen many of Europe's upheavals beginning with World War II. The latest upheaval is the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of Communism - events that have left him disheartened because they betray the promise he once saw in the Communist system.
Set in 1991, Zhukovski's life is suddenly as chaotic as the new Europe he sees around him. For starters, an American publishing company is wanting to buy his guidebook. Initially reluctant to part with his guidebook - especially to a capitalist company - Zhukovski starts down a path that will lead through much of Europe's 20th century history and to a much changed Feliks.
On a trip to the United States, Zhukovski makes the decision to sell his guidebook. While in the U.S., Feliks decides to look up his long-lost brother who now lives in Ohio. The two men have not seen each other since the early years of World War II when his older brother ran off to join the Resistance. Though still highly distrustful of Americans, Feliks embraces his new-found family after decades of living alone in Paris. Once set in motion, the momentum of Feliks' life picks up speed and quite a few eggs get broken ... not the least of which is Feliks' once insular life and perceptions.
To say too much of what Feliks encounters would be to spoil the fun of tracing his journeys and discovering his past for the first time. There are moments of humor as well as heart-breaking loss. At the heart of the novel is the story of one man's gradual discovery that the past is not always what it appears, the truth is sometimes subjective, and that making progress (or omlets) requires breaking some eggs.
The Breaking of Eggs is more than just the story of a former Communist coming face to face with some of that system's "grave errors." It's a story that could be written about any ideology that places loyalty to a particular system above being humane to our fellow humans. It could just as easily be about liberal vs. conservative or secular vs.

    Titre: Le cœur cousu
    Auteur: Carole Martinez
    Narrateur: Suliane Brahim
    Format: Unabridged
Durée: 11 hrs and 36 mins
    Langue: Français
    Date de publication: 06-02-16
    Éditeur: Gallimard
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

    Story of my life
This novella is sensational of how immersive it is and it felt like I could relate to Ryan.
    Ended too suddenly
Love love love Nick Earls' writing, but this ended abruptly for me and felt incomplete. Only negative for me. Otherwise found story held my attention and that I was interested in the characters.

Not what I thought I was ordering
I was assigned "Il turno di notte..." for an Italian book club. I thought I was ordering a novel, but what arrived was the DVD with part of a film script and a description of how the film was made, discussion re the actors, etc. certainly not the novel the film was made from. It was quite a disillusion and a waste of money. Also, I didn't realize the book was being sent from Italy and would take several weeks to arrive. I still could have read it for the discussion next Tuesday had it been the book I thought I was getting. I have now gotten it on my Kindle, but I am not sure I have the right edition as it still seems to be more of a script than a novel.
Nice but with usual Erri De Luca problems.....
Erri De Luca is a great write but he always search for writing solutions I sometimes find not natural enough to be credible, It's a sort of never ending search for sophisticated words and sentences. Sometimes he succeeds, often, but this is a dangerous way to capture readers' attention. As usual short, in my mind too short and not completely developed.
    Breve racconto di De Luca
Erri De Luca. Il Turno di Notte lo Fanno le Stelle
Racconto brevissimo, suggestivo e accattivante. Due personaggi accomunati dall'amore per la vita e la montagna.
il turno di notte lo fanno le stelle
Un racconto che non mi ha convinto, troppo breve. Non coinvolgente come i libri precedenti. Uno susseguirsi di frasi ad effetto.

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Smoke is a gripping tale that bridges commercial, literary and genre fiction - a sweeping epic with the thrilling edge of The Secret History or The Passage and the magic of Philip Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy or Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell.
Smoke opens in a private boarding school near Oxford, but history has not followed the path known to us. In this other past, sin is a physical attribute, visible to all, and children are born carrying the seeds of evil within them. It is in this school, surrounded by the sons of the wealthy and well connected, that two boys called Thomas and Charlie discover that the world of smoke, soot and ash is not as it seems, for sin has a secret history and virtue a politics both intricate and murderous.
The two boys soon leave the confines of the school to enter into a struggle for the very soul of their nation. But will their own souls survive unscathed?
    Members Reviews:
My goodness but this is tedious
I really tried with this. I presume someone thought about the phrase 'fuming with anger', thought that would be a cool metaphor for sin, then read a lot of Dickens. It's written in a sort of Dickensian style, but this means a lot of passive voice and far far too much detail - people don't jus get up and leave, they rise and the rooms are left, with a passing reference to the wainscotting - until you're screaming 'oh do get on with it!' The main obsession with smoke and sin becomes quickly ridiculous - every one is twisted, everyone is dirty, it's all grim - and the three main characters are stunningly unsympathetic and dull. There is an attempt at steam punk sensibilities, but it was all lost in the smog for me. Not for me, though I imagine if it's your sort of thing, then it will keep you going till the end.
    A great, gothic tale
What made the experience of listening to Smoke the most enjoyable?
I thought the narrator really brought the story alive - he was excellent.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked the relationship between the 3 main characters and how much they supported each other through everything.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
When Livia kisses them both right at the end.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Not really, although the bits with Mowgli were very sad.
    Any additional comments?
This is one of those books that I think is even better to listen to than to read; the narration really brings it alive. Brilliant!

    Publisher's Summary:
"On the other side of the villages was the vast, infinite Forest. It was the land of mystery, lore and legend and I had always been drawn to it...When my eyes alighted on it, everything came together once more. I knew what I had to do. I needed to leave. I needed to dream. I was going to be a revolutionary, simply now because I had that eternal currency that all revolutions deal in: Hope."
Unhappy with the stifling monotony of everyday life, a storyteller decides to leave everything behind. The First Storyteller recounts the incredible and transformative journey that the storyteller embarks upon. Through a wide variety of styles and genres, the book draws upon the very idea of stories to bring to you a unique tale that is simultaneously funny, tragic and hopeful. It brings to the forefront the emotional turmoil of a deeply conflicted individual, and in the end, the question becomes not what is at the end of the path, but whether the person who starts the journey would be the same as the one who ends it.
    Members Reviews:
The book is like being around an old friend - and isnât that ...
The first storyteller is one of those books that you start reading in the middle of the afternoon and find yourself finishing at 5 a.m., wondering what year it is. The book is like being around an old friend - and isnât that the perfect cure for a day that you clearly rolled out of the wrong side of the bed into? YES, ITâS THAT GOOD.
Have you ever been in a situation wherein unreasonable suffering seems the only task left in your life that suicide seems to be a very reasonable option? Thought that breathing is a disease only death can cure? Thought that living only extends the misery and torment you've already took? Felt the vacuum of meaningless suffering sucking the life out of you like a black hole? If yes, then you haven't read this book. On a scale of 1 to 5, It deserves a perfect 10.
I donât even know how to describe this book. Itâs beautiful, heart-breaking, yet very comfortingâall at the same time. This book takes you on a journey of healing and self-discovery. It's dramatic, yet ultimately inspiring. It's fresh, it's well written, it is addictive and so full of precious content. It's poignant and stays with you, Some people don't want to think, they want a fluffy escape. This is not a fluffy escape.
As I turned each page I realised "oh my God! This is my life and I'm not alone.â
Once you spot the synopsis, you can not not wonder what the story is about and would be like to know further (unless you're some form of an oppressor of fantasy or just plain dismisser of anything one-of-a-kind). Even if you wouldn't read, you'd still wonder... and then perhaps turn that wonder into a plan to find out what it's all about.
Itâs a roller coaster of emotions. Itâs a revolution. So is the storyteller. âI needed to dream. I was going to be a revolutionary, simply now because I had that eternal currently all revolutions deal in: Hopeâ
One of the books that has the potential to change the face of Indian Literature.
In this book, Varun addresses how to find deep personal worth while living in a world that is constantly bombarded by messages of who, what, and how we should be.

    Great read!
This is an excellent book, one of best I have read in English or Italian. The plot is captivating and the characters well written. The way in which the author moves the reader back and forth through time in order to develope the characters of the grandfather and grandson is remarkable. There is also a touch of magical realism in oddity of the grandfather's personally that only adds to uniqueness of the story. I highly recommend this book.
