If you could sum up La bella bestia [The Beautiful Beast] in three words, what would they be?
    Exciting, thrilling, mysterious!
What other book might you compare La bella bestia [The Beautiful Beast] to and why?
    La Reina del Sur
What about Juan Manuel Martínezs performance did you like?
His performance is ok, but giving sometimes more emphasis to the reading would have
made the audio book more exciting!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Not really, already listened to it twice and want to re-listeng again! is a great companion audiobook late at night..........!

DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PIECE OF CRAP!
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This was only 29 minutes long and it was still a HUGE waste of time. The story was non-existent and the narrator was appallingly bad. He sounded like he had marbles in his mouth, very hard to understand. What a waste of $3.95! This may be the worst audio book I have ever heard.
What could Joel M. Andre have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
    Spend more time writing it.
How could the performance have been better?
Hiring someone who can speak clearly and concisely.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Brutal?
There was not enough of it to cut.

    Title: Wet Places at Noon
    Subtitle: Iowa Short Fiction Award
    Author: Lee K. Abbott
    Narrator: Ken Krauss
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 38 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-28-12
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Abbott's community is pure Americana, a wild world inhabited by gloriously street-smart smartasses: overeducated, underemployed men mourning for the confident women who have left them - or have they? - but knowing that equally confident women are just around the corner-or are they? His urgent, maximalist style allows their exhilarating voices to be heard and remembered.
    Critic Reviews:
Lee Abbott is a significant American writer, one of our culture's more compelling stylist, an acrobat of the word. Abbott's voice has the familarity of a front-porch storyteller, the voice of the guy in every picture of every high-school prom who has what he wrongly thinks is a firm grip on life and love and from that point thereafter disappears into an unkind world. (Bob Shacochis)
Abbott writes like a fallen angel. These are wild, vibrant stories, caustic and sardonic, wildly funny and bitter as grief, full of passion and perfidy. As his characters crash through burnt-over landscapes and tune into 'the talk talked by worms,' they bring us an odd kind of hope. (Andrea Barret)
    Members Reviews:
    Narration is off
I love Abbott's storytelling. But I had difficulty overlooking the narrator's mispronunciation of Spanish which even the local redneck gringos get right. Disappointingly marred the narrative.
    Buckle your seatbelt...
Abbott's voice sweeps you up, enfolds you in a bearhug and carries you breathlessly along on a roller coaster ride of wonderful, treacherous, very human emotions. If you are lucky--as some of his characters are--you will also find moments of true enlightenment.
    Masterful Writing Well Read!!
    Any additional comments?
I don't know why I haven't heard of Lee K. Abbott before. He is a master wordsmith weaving unlikely, sometimes laugh-out-loud stories about ordinary people. I was so taken with this that I listened to it practically in a single day. Ken Krauss has a cadence that matches the authors rhythms well. He knows how to stay out of the way and let the story unfold. A perfect approach to this masterful work. The author touches on a myriad of issues in this collection of short stories, including: relationships between broken people, the Vietnam war, and Aliens in Roswell. I think men particularly will find themselves represented truthfully in all their complexity. I highly recommend it!

    Lovely ending
The ending left me wishing for a very positive outcome for Batman in the city of superheroes. Great story.
    Lovely story made me cry.
Beautifully wrought. Wonderfully narrated. Will definitely look for more titles by this author...highly recommended .
    OUTSTANDING!
A great story... So very different to the usual.. And the pace and intonation of the reading was perfect. Thanks to the ABC interview today for introducing me to Nick Earls as a writer.
    Great read
Enjoyed this story the whole way through, but particularly liked the unexpected final plot twist.
Really got me in the end
I really wasn't sure about this at the start, why did I care about the indulgent life of a rap star or brat which is how he really comes across.
But when the beautiful Ariel came into the picture, the contrast was amazing, how lucky some people appear even when they dont come across as deserving compared to those innocents who can't seam to catch a break.
The joy portrayed in the park from both father and daughter was outstanding and the slide scene brought me to tears.

    Title: Grower's Market

    Narrator: Jacob H. Knoll
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 18 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-12-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Grower's Market is set in remote marijuana country peopled with characters whose backgrounds are diverse and whose futures are uncertain. Sunbeam, who entered adult life as a 1960s San Francisco hippie girl, moved north searching for peace and quiet in unspoiled nature. Eventually she ended up running the Bird of Prey Tavern and growing enough weed to support her tranquil life. The men who eventually work for her - Shadow, Shrimp, Stones, Toon, and Shakespeare - are combat veterans searching for some of the same things Sunbeam found.
A Vietnam vet named Case, a widower, is Sunbeam's neighbor. Living on the top floor of the tavern is Rainbow, a runaway from Texas who tends bar and nurses her husband, a quadriplegic known as Uncle Sam.
Shadow and Shrimp plan to take the money they've earned growing weed and open a restaurant. Shakespeare is hard at work on a novel about a hero named Superpenis, modeled after the cartoon character Plastic Man, and a New York publisher is interested.
The heavily tattooed Toon sees himself as a living visual symbol of a world gone mad, and Stones has fallen in love with a virtual stranger at a homeless shelter. But now in the second decade of the 21st century, new people have arrived to claim space in the quiet valleys, next to the clear-flowing creeks, along the green mountainsides. They are large-scale growers, armed gangs, corrupt cops, and drug cartels, and violence and death come with them. Shadow, Shrimp, Shakespeare, Toon, and Stones must defend their turf against more heavily armed men who don't mind declaring war to claim this marijuana country as their own.
    Members Reviews:
Dramatic action with memorable characters on all sides of the law and insights into marijuana creation.
Michael Baughman captures vividly the spectacular wilderness wherein his remarkable and memorable characters independently create and market their product successfully--against violently opposing forces on both sides of the law. Country and people I know from hiking the mountains, forests and valleys and wading and boating the cold clear water streams, and learning from these citizens in far northern California who have come from widely different locales and personal experiences. I gained from this-true-to-life novel new perspectives into contemporary life in American society and culture.

    Rabelais Meets Samual Beckett
Baughman's novel had me laughing before I got past the chapter titles. His sense of humor is irreverent but infectious, and though some knee-jerk moralists might object to the four-letter language, the truth is that this book is about as moral a statement as you'll find. The love relationships and friendships are gentle, honest, and enduring. The aspirations of the main characters are modest and wholesome. Where Baughman gets thoughtful and occasionally dark is in his treatment of bigotry, greed, and testosterone-driven violence--the very elements that have invaded and criippled the lives of his main characters and that threaten more destruction. There's texture and elegance here that transcend the comic scaffolding.
    Greedy vs. Greedier
As a fan of Edward Abbey and Cormac McCarthy, I enjoyed this novel tremendously. Baughman fits right in with these guys. Throw in Clint Eastwood, too.

    Good, Satisfying, and Nice
    Non-spoilery section: (thanks polandbananasbooks)
    BEAUTIFUL LOOKING BOOK. LIKE SRSLY.
I own the new cover. The original cover was ok, but it appeared that she would never get out of her fallen cover look. "Girl In A Pretty Dress With A Pretty Background". Then she changed it and I love it! (You may argue it is just another pretty, cut-off girl face, but when you receive it and take the time to look its got a lot more detail than that) The entire cover has a low temperature, with blues coming in everywhere. The title is slightly translucent, so you can see strands of hair in it. The title page features dripping water-glass, and at the beginning of every chapter is a fitting teardrop.
    VERY PRETTY.
I liked this book. Didn't love it or hate it. And I was lacking in the apathy that I tend to feel towards 3-star books. The author did a good job. I was compelled to keep reading. This book is an airy one, though. No real deepness happening anywhere. Unfortunately even the characters fell a little flat. But, overall, the story was good, the characters satisfying, and the writing nice, like a calming light breeze in the midst of a hurricane.
I will say however that if you have a long list of books to catch up on this one may not be your first choice. It is a great choice though if you've just gotten off a very emotional book and you need SOMETHING to cool you down. Like if you just read We Were Liars, or The Fault in Our Stars, or Before I Fall.
****SPOILERS BELOW SO LEAVE NOW MY LITTLE PIXIES WHO ACTUALLY CARE-----OTHERWISE WELCOME TO THE REALM OF THE TRUTH******
I did like this book. Mostly because it was entertaining, something to do. You should read it sometime. But below I'm gonna get into the things that really bugged me.
Eureka. Eureka. EUREKA. This is a personal annoyance, but it appears a few others share it, so I'm gonna mention it. The main character's name is annoying. Because this book is in the third-person point of view, (which I have no problem with) I had to read that name a lot. And after a while, it got annoying. As in, my brain stopped wanting to pronounce it half the time, and each time I read it it started sounding less and less like a word. As one reviewer points out, "I HAVE FOUND IT!" resonates within every page.
The author describes things. As authors are supposed to do. Yet, I found myself skipping these descriptions quite frequently, not because they were long or anything, I just felt like there was nothing drawing me in to read them. I look back and only now realize why- there is not nearly enough figurative language or interesting words in this book. There was figurative language, but it was small and boring, and used in so many other books it cannot be called unique. This was like this.
