    Dress
I must have read a little about the book before choosing it and I'm pleased I did as I enjoy a double story - one in the present and one alongside in the fifties. It was sad in parts but delightful in others. Not a deep story but very enjoyable to listen to whilst preparing meals!
I'll probably choose more by the same author in the future.
    Very Enjoyable
Enjoyed the story and narration. Loved the merging of the two stories and how they come together. Well worth a listen.

    Publisher's Summary:
Young Dot Allbones is the runt of a large Midlands family. Blessed with none of her sisters' beauty, she'll be lucky even to find a man to marry her. Whatever shall be done with Dot?
When Kate Eddowes comes up from London and moves in next door, no one expects the pretty and popular orphan to take any notice of the plain-faced and provincial Dot, five years her junior. But against the odds, the girls strike up an unlikely friendship.
As the friends become young women, the bright lights of the capital lure them south, and Dot discovers a lucrative talent for making people laugh. But even as she shines on the music hall stage, Kate's own life begins to fall apart. And the shadowy streets of Whitechapel are no place for a desperate woman to wander....
Capturing the dark heart of Victorian London with her inimitable sharpness and wry wit, Laurie Graham brings to life the bustling pleasures and not-so-hidden dangers of life in a crowded city with its extremes of poverty and wealth. And all the while, in the shadows, lurks the lacerating threat of the Ripper.
    Critic Reviews:
"Why is Laurie Graham not carried on people's shoulders through cheering crowds? Her books are brilliant!" (Marian Keyes)
"A delightfully smart and sophisticated historical novelist." (Sunday Times)
"What a wonderful, life-enhancing, truly funny writer she is." (Wendy Buchan)
"One of my favourite writers." (Wendy Holden)

    Great read, great reader ...
"The Night in Question" is fun, well constructed and finely researched. so that it immerses the reader into the the darker side of Victorian times - but not without some humour along the way.
The book takes place in the colourful milieu of the Victorian Music Halls, with a feisty comedienne, Dot Allbones as main protagonist. She's a grand artiste whose friends come from all ends of the social spectrum (toffs from the West End often frequented the seedy theatres with their burlesque ladies). Dot is doing quite well, as she says herself, with top billing in some of the best halls in London, but things take a new turn for her when Kate Eddowes, her one-time childhood friend turns up, down on her luck. In addition, some monstrous killer is fast making his mark around White Chapel - one who would later become known as Jack the Ripper. Enough said for now - read the book!
I loved the small details the author describes relating to theatres, performers and backstage rivalries. Her accounts of music hall traditions and the use of real characters (Marie Lloyd, Kate Eddowes, The Ripper) lend a real edge to the narrative. The humour throughout, especially, for example, when describing the backstage carry-on of the old music halls, can be laugh out loud. But the grimmer side of life, such as the appalling poverty and the condition of the lower orders of the otherwise "proper" society is equally vivid.
Since we're talking here about the audio version, the sheer drama lent to the book for any reader/listener by the wonderful actress Juanita McMahon is a bonus. McMahon's extraordinary range of accents, intonations and humorous delivery is pitch perfect every time and does the tale full justice.
Laurie Graham is the author of many more historical novels that cover an astonishing range of eras, from long-ago royal families to British women in World War II and even the Kennedys.

In the high Rocky Mountains, Civil War veteran Marshall Brewster has a vision of wealth and fame. Under the tutelage of a hardened railroad tycoon, Brewster will build a railroad connecting Colorado's booming silver mines to a country starved for wealth - and maybe win himself the hand of a beautiful woman in the process. But as in war, Brewster's plan is soon shattered by the enemy: an angry, proud and desperate tribe of Cheyene warriors, a competing railroad baron, and the ruthless, murderous hired guns at his beck and call.
On a landscape of towering mountains, driving snow, and clear rushing streams, the blood of fighters and innocents is being shed. And for a man who thought he already had his fill of war, another is just beginning - with no retreat, no surrender, and even bloodier than the battle he left behind.

    Publisher's Summary:
This is a beautiful, moving tale from the best-selling author of the Flashman Papers.
To the young Lady Margaret Dacre, raised in the rich security of Queen Elizabeth's court, the Scottish border was a land of blood and brutal violence, where raid and murder were commonplace, and her broad inheritance lay at the mercy of the outlaw riders and feuding tribes of England's last frontier.
Beyond the law's protection, alone but for her house servants and an elderly priest, she could wait helpless in her lonely manor or somehow find the means to fight the terror approaching from the northern night!
    Critic Reviews:
Praise for George MacDonald Fraser: "Thanks to Fraser's passion for history, his rare gift for rattling narrative and his infectious delight in robust, rollicking language, we can rejoice in a work of genius worthy of being ranked with - there can be no higher accolade." (P. G. Wodehouse, Daily Telegraph)
"As well as providing a fine assortment of treats, George MacDonald Fraser is a marvellous reporter and a first-rate historical novelist." (Kingsley Amis)

    Interesting language
Took me a while to get caught up in this story because it was written in the auld language, but after a while that was not a problem. I soon became fascinated to learn about the history of this time period.
I found it hard to put down
I enjoyed reading this story . Some of the vocabulary was challenging , but interesting. The characters were lively and seemed historical . I enjoyed the authors notes at the end of this book .
    Good Read, Interesting.
I liked this book. It kept my interest all the way through and was an interesting story. As to the accuracy of the story I have no idea but I didn't buy it as a history book so as long as most things rang true, fine by me. I save 5 stars for really GREAT books so a 4 star is a good rating from me.
A great story of the Scottish/English during the late 16th century
A great story of the Scottish/English during the late 16th century. A bit short, but tells of the story of Lady Dacre learning the ways of border.
My second copy of a class A historical novel
George MacDonald Fraser is the best of the Border historians. It as if he had ridden with the Reivers in their heyday. His fiction is every bit as compelling. I have a library copy of this book which had been given to me as a gift because of the prominence of the Border Reivers in my own historical fiction. I wanted a clean copy for my special library,(without tobacco stains and who knows what) and this is it.

The novel explores each of their three adult children and their struggle for individual identity and self-worth. A GREAT READ
A great read, hard to put down, tells what it was like for a colored family living in the South before civil rights. Harvest The Dust is the fascinating story of a beautiful young negress and a wealthy white land owner's son who lost his heart to a black woman. and their long-lasting illicit love affair. Their son is still young when conflict breaks out, revealing the affair, and he learns who his father is.
It happens in the deep South in the depression years of the thirties. Adolphus Ward peels back the passion laden caste system that kept people of color bonded in a form of continued slavery enforced by a two-tiered justice system in which a white man could do no wrong and a black man could do no right.
Jacob Tallman, a black sharecropper, finally came into ownership of the land he farmed. Claude Hammon, the largest landowner in the county, seeks to force Tallman to give up his land so he can add it to his own holdings. Chas, his college educated son, confesses to his father that he is in love with Pearl, the tall comely daughter, of Jacob Tallman.
