    Language: English
    Release date: 02-16-05
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 153 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
All of Europe wants the grail. Many may doubt it exists, but no one would willingly allow an enemy to find Christendom's most precious relic, and Thomas finds himself in a murderous race with the Inquisitor and with Guy de Vexille, the mysterious black rider who murdered Thomas' father.
Thomas' father bequeathed him a mysterious notebook which confirms the grail's existence and offers clues to where it might be hidden. But his rivals have the advantage of the torture chamber of the Inquisition. Thomas, seeking help to decipher the book's cryptic pages, is delivered instead to his worst enemies.
He finds refuge in Brittany with the Countess of Armorica, but fate will not let him rest. He is thrust into one of the most desperate fights of the Hundred Years' War, the battle of la Roche-Derrien, and amidst the flames, arrows, and butchery of that night he faces his enemies again.
    Critic Reviews:
"Cornwell is meticulous about historical facts and period detail, and his descriptions of butchery with arrow, mace, and battleaxe are nothing if not convincing." (Publishers Weekly)

    Great!!
This series could be the next Rome for HBO. Could not read this fast enough.
Outstanding action in the Middle Ages!
This is a continuation of the story of Thomas of Hookton, begun in 'The Archer's Tale'. We meet up again with characters introduced in the first installment, such as Jannette, Sir Will Skeet, and new character are introduced, such as a nefarious Inquisitor. Several good battles, some surprises, good, good, good. And the narrator is absolutely excellent, and can play the voices of French and Scottish, as well as English, perfectly. Highly recommended!
    An action packed adventure
This is book two in The Grail Quest series by Bernard Cornwell. The story takes place in 1346 to 1347 with Thomas of Hookton and English archer is seeking the Holy Grail by following a book his father wrote. Thomass father was a priest and was said to be the keeper of the Grail. He was killed by Guy Vexille, Thomas' French cousin in book one. The book has great adventure, distressed damsels, armored knights, wayward bishops and beleaguered castles. Cornwell is famous for his meticulous historical fact and of battle scenes; he gives a magnificent description of the Battle of Durham, Nevilles Cross and La Roch-Derrien. If you do not like violent scenes skip this book but if you are a fan of historical fiction this book is for you. Tim Pigott-Smith does a great job with the narration of the book.
Great moments, but not as good as the first
The story coalesced so nicely in the first novel, I was surprised by how cobbled together this one felt. It feels like a filler between the first and third. Still wonderfully written and great to listen to. I wish Timothy Smith could narrate my day to day life.
Less Cornwell Better Than No Cornwell
It's something of a mystery why this Grail Quest series consists of three abridged books, when so much of Bernard Cornwell is available in full audito editions. It's a shame, because these are engrossing reads. So be warned that you're getting 6 hours for your credit, not the usual 19-12 hrs. But hey, you're getting Cornwell. Or chunks of Cornwell, at least. Excellent performance.

the best way to learn history
Would you consider the audio edition of Eagle's Cry to be better than the print version?
The reader has good dramatic skills
What was one of the most memorable moments of Eagle's Cry?
the suspense before the Louisiana purchase.
    Which scene was your favorite?
James Madison telling Dolly she was right about Livingston in Paris, and Dolly's emotional support of James, giving him the credit for the success of the deal.
Who was the most memorable character of Eagle's Cry and why?
M Lewis. His passions and moods.
    History relived
This book was a little long, but was helpful in reminding the listener of this important chapter in American history. The rating might have been higher, but the reader was just not my favorite.
    What's Next?
I liked the book because I liked the development of the roles of Burr and Jefferson, and also because I have not read much about Madison and his relationship with Dolly. Many of the books charictors are left hanging at the end, however. Lewis on the keelboat (without his dog Seaman), the shipping heiress on a ship without her lover, and poor Andy Jackson regretting his contencious nature.
Obviously this is the first of a series and I will listen to 1812 to see how everyone survives (except the love stricken and besotted Lewis). What happens to Burr is very well covered by Gore Vidal.
    Denis Wright
    Fascinating!
I would recommend this book to all history buffs. James Madison was very smart. And his good friend and neighbor, President Tom Jefferson knew it.

    great book, but abridged ...
I loved the book. However, this abridged version is much too short. The books spans a couple hundred years, and there are dozens of characters. I could follow the story just fine, but I can imagine that someone who did not read the book would come away with his head spinning. It's really a shame, too. Almost all the characters in the book are fleshed out nicely. In this audio book, barely is a character introduced, and he's gone. Hopefully, an unabridged version will be recorded.
    More than a City
This story made my trip to New York absolutely vivid. When I took the boat tour on the river one late afternoon, my mind's eye could see the colony, the people and the early Indians. I was truly able to understand how the characters felt when they saw the shore, the small fort, and the natives.
As I walked through NYC, I realized the history of this wonderful city and how meaningful it was.
    Little Known History and Fascinating
This was a real treat. I am a big listener of historical non-fiction. I came to Audible after reading through all the recorded books at my local libraries and was still looking for more. I have often wondered what made a good historical book and I think I have narrowed it down to four aspects:
New and Different - I get something new and different, not a rehash of something I have read before
People and Places - I learn to see and feel the people and places involved.
    This book fulfills all four:
Even though I knew much of the history before, after, and around the colony, there was so much that was new and different it felt as if I were listening to a mystery. The people and places were so well described I felt as if I were there at on the shores, in the mountains, on the ships, in the meetings, on the walls of the forts. A real delight. Five stars.
    great story
Too bad it is an abridged version it is a very fascinating story of early america. It would be nice to see more of Beverly Swerling's books in the audio format. and to see City of Dreams redone in the unabdriged version.
    I love history!
Would you listen to City of Dreams again? Why?
No, once was enough, but I enjoyed it.
What was one of the most memorable moments of City of Dreams?
When Nicolas "sold" his sister so he could marry the butchers wife
    Which scene was your favorite?
The sweet ignorance of Janet on her wedding night...

    Release date: 06-18-04
    Publisher: Recorded Books

    Publisher's Summary:
Risking execution if he is discovered, ex-convict Jack Maggs has returned to England from Australia. Pretending to be a servant, he is hired by a wealthy London household, where he quickly insinuates himself into his employer's affairs. Although Maggs conceals his ultimate goal, the murderous demons of his past threaten to tear away Maggs' ill-fitting disguise.
From polished drawing rooms to sooty rooftop garrets, Peter Carey's vivid novel takes you into a Dickensian world filled with intrigue and eccentricity. This exceptional work from a Booker Prize-winning author has captured awards and top places on best seller lists in Europe and America.
    Critic Reviews:
"A rousing old-fashioned narrative...[that] stands on its own as an adventure story." (The New York Times Book Review) "Uncommonly exciting and engaging. As much as anyone now writing, Peter Carey is a master of storytelling. His empathy with his characters, combined with his psychological sharp-sightedness, has them almost jumping off the page in full human complexity. An especial bonus is his style. Vivid, exact, unexpected images and language match the quick, witty intelligence flickering through this novel, and make it a triumph of ebullient indictment, humane insight, and creative generosity." (Sunday Times [London])

    Jack Maggs
I have been fascinated by this book. The story has surprised me many times by not taking the expected direction. It's complex and the vocabulary is thrilling. The story takes you to an interesting time period, Spring, 1837. The historical details are riveting. I want to read many more books by this author.
And, my emotions are engaged. I really care about Jack, and the others. It is tragic and moving; funny and hopeful; scary and homey. Quite an accomplishment.
    not exactly Dickens
I enjoyed this book and found the characters interesting and compelling. Since it was compared so much to Dickens novels and is definitely based in the same world and time period, I expected more friendship and hope even in a city of poverty and cons. Carey goes into places of the character's minds that Dickens would not have gone. this is not a bad thing at all; it is most probably more realistic. My only complaint was that I felt the character of Jack Maggs switched back and forth too often and too quickly between an enraged, threatening criminal and a good-hearted, wronged man.
    Eyes Wide Open
This book is simply stunning from start to finish. Carey has taken the somewhat Dickensian notion of the foundling raised by criminals and elevated it to a level I never imagined could be done. I'm still wrestling with the characters in my mind and it has been a week since I finished the final chapter. This is the second book of this author I have downloaded. Peter Carey is brilliant!
Parallel Book to Dickens "Great Expectations"
I was noticing how Jack Maggs reminded me of the convict character in Dicken's Great Expectations, so I was gratified to learn from online searches after finishing that the author intended it to be read as a parallel book.

Being in the right place at the right time
If you have gotten this far into the series you are as bitten by the Civil War Battle series as I am and it keeps getting better. The host of characters are well rounded and by now like friends and I find myself caring about their welfare both while suffering lack of supplies and particularly in the battle scenes which are particularly well written. This is good stuff and Lloyd James is going a great job of narration with each character having his own voice. It brings it all very much alive.
    Good Story
As with the 3rd book - the author has done a nice job of "spreading out" the Brannan family members to get some interesting perspectives of different theaters of the Civil War. Very good description of the battles of Federicksburg and Jackson's death.

The journey encompasses a great and satisfying diversity of adventures. Maturin climbs the Thousand Steps of the sacred crater of the orangutans; a killer typhoon catches Aubrey and his crew trying to work their ship of a reef; and at the barbaric court of Pulo Prabang a classic duel of intelligence agents unfold: the French envoys, well entrenched in the Sultan's good graces, against the savage cunning of Maturin.
The heart of The Thirteen Gun Salute is the story of a friendship, and it is here that we have the most perfect window on the soul of that age. Maturin's unsparing, melancholy intelligence mirrors the scientific rationalism of the Enlightenment; Aubrey, bluff, competent, and endlessly courageous, embodies the fierce the fierce energy of the dawning century. Again and again the listener is refreshed by their enthusiasms and wit, their music, quarrels, and laughter.
This is the sixth in O'Brian's 20-volume Aubrey/Maturin series.

"If Jane Austen had written rousing sea yarns, she would have produced something very close to the prose of Patrick O'Brian." (Time)

    Why this book
Why was this abridged version offered? Patrick Tull is much better than smith. I selected this version last month and now the unabridged version by Tull is available. Why do you make us suffer?
    Good content poor narration
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Patrick Tull has been my narrator of choice for 20 of these O'Brian books. I mistakenly purchased this book narrated by Tim Pigott-Smith. Listening to his attempt at an ole Boston accent is horribly painful. So bad that I payed for a new copy of the book narrated by Tull.
The content is great, get the book, be sure the narrator suits your fancy.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Fortune of War?
    The escape from Boston Harbor
How could the performance have been better?
    Narration
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    no, savor it over several

    Language: English
    Release date: 06-27-13
    Publisher: Hodder Headline Limited
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 36 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
"City of love. City of splendour. City of terror. City of dreams."
Inspired by the haunting, passionate story of the city of lights, this epic novel weaves a gripping tale of four families across the centuries: from the lies that spawn the noble line of de Cygne to the revolutionary Le Sourds who seek their destruction; from the Blanchards whose bourgeois respectability offers scant protection against scandal to the hard-working Gascons and their soaring ambitions.
Over hundreds of years, these four families are bound by forbidden loves and marriages of convenience; dogged by vengeance and murderous secrets; torn apart by the irreconcilable differences of birth and faith, and brought together by the tumultuous history of their city. Paris bursts to life in the intrigue, corruption and glory of its people.
Beloved author of Sarum, London, and New York, Edward Rutherfurd illuminates Paris as only he can: capturing the romance and everyday drama of the men and women who, in 2000 years, transformed a humble trading post on the muddy banks of the Seine into the most celebrated city in the world.
    Members Reviews:
Wonderful, descriptive tale. Thoroughly enjoyed it
What made the experience of listening to Paris the most enjoyable?
I was in Paris at the time so that helped! This book spans several generations and does it well. Loved it. Was a long, great yarn.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Hard to say - they were all great.
    Any additional comments?
I appreciated Paris so much more having read this book, and it was just a great read. kept me hooked right til the end. Brilliant
    Centuries of beautiful, delectable snobbery
Would you consider the audio edition of Paris to be better than the print version?
Listening is so much more experiential, the voice, like a an instrument adds emotion and nuance to the writer.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
One does not read Edward Rutherfurd for the plot and story. The narrative is purely a backdrop or a canvas to explore the city and to 'experience' its historic life. The actual story is, in true Rutherfurd tradition, slightly weak and contrived. Don't get me wrong, it is much less painful than anything by Dan Brown, but the narrative is a vehicle not the end. Therefore the end of the book could be anything, since the real end of the book is going to be your travel agent.
What about Jane Wymark and Jonathan Keeble s performance did you like?
The two J's do justice to the story and help to delineate the forward-backward jumps in centuries. Jonathan can really make con you to believe it is a woman talking without any obvious falsetto trick.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Sojourn, finalist for the National Book Award and winner of both the Dayton Literary Peace Prize and inaugural Chautauqua Prize, is the story of Jozef Vinich, who was uprooted from a 19th-century mining town in Colorado by a family tragedy and returns with his father to an impoverished shepherds life in rural Austria-Hungary.
When World War One comes, Jozef joins his adopted brother as a sharpshooter in the Kaisers army, surviving a perilous trek across the frozen Italian Alps and capture by a victorious enemy.
A stirring tale of brotherhood, coming-of-age, and survival, that was inspired by the authors own family history, this novel evokes a time when Czechs, Slovaks, Austrians, and Germans fought on the same side while divided by language, ethnicity, and social class in the most brutal war to date. It is also a poignant tale of fathers and sons, addressing the great immigration to America and the desire to live the American dream amidst the unfolding tragedy in Europe.

Interesting but somehow less than satisfying
Would you try another book from Andrew Krivak and/or Stefan Rudnicki?
    Maybe on both.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Sojourn?
When Josef's adopted brother was killed. The death was so sudden and senseless as was the entire war experience--thus it was moving.
What three words best describe Stefan Rudnickis performance?
    Annoying accent.
Was The Sojourn worth the listening time?
    Yes
    Any additional comments?
The photo displayed on my iphone as the book played identified the book as 'The Legend of Drizzt Book III' and had an incongruous illustration given the subject of the book. This illustration is different from the one on the site and in my downloads folder. The author was correct though. Given I was listening on a trip I couldn't look it up. It caused an aura of confusion for me while I listened. I kept wondering what I had missed in books one and two because I rarely if ever read a series out of sequence.

"[Galsworthy] has carried the history of his time through three generations, and his success in mastering so excellently his enormously difficult material, both in its scope and in its depth, remains an extremely memorable feat in English literature." (Anders Osterling, Nobel Prize presentation speech, 1932)

    Finally happiness in the family
I think anyone who loves a good tale well told will love this novel with one foot in the Victorian era and the other well planted in modernity"
The concerns I have with Galsworthy's earlier novels as being overly self-conciously satyrical, seem to be able to allow the characters to tell the story themselves instead of following the heavy hand of the author" I did not find the reader's highly dramatic interpretation of the story of love of place and family to get in the way as much as it did in the earlier novels.
Dinny is a strong and appealing character as she embodies the most positive of English traits. Read this book and disappear in to it. Have fun in there. I did.
    Amazing narration and exquisite language

John Galsworthy is well deserving of a Nobel prize in literature. And David Case brings these books alive in a way that I could no do by reading them myself. The language is exquisite, and the narration is perfect. I've read all the books in the series up to now. Highly recommended.

Passing through the woods is a German circus - a troupe of waifs and strays, led by the infamous Herr Neuroff. They agree to take in Noa and the baby, on one condition: to earn her keep, Noa must master the flying trapeze - under the tutorage of mysterious aerialist Astrid. Soaring high above the crowds, Noa and Astrid must learn to trust one another...or plummet. But with the threat of war closing in, loyalty can become the most dangerous trait of all.

    Original and riveting
I just finished this book, and as I wipe away my tears I have to tell you that this is an original, riveting story about courage, love, friendship, and family. A while back, someone asked if there were too many books written about WWII, and my answer was no....there are millions of stories to tell. The Orphan's Tale is a great example of this, telling a story about events and acts of bravery that I knew nothing about. In this masterful tale, Astrid is an aerialist whose family had owned a circus in Germany; but her family was Jewish, and had disappeared when she returned home after being cast aside by her husband, a German officer. Noa is a young girl whose single act of bravery leads her to the circus, an uncommon but welcome refuge for her. This story is told with such passion and enormous heart, with pulse-pounding suspense as Astrid, Noa, and the rest of their circus friends are under constant threat of the Nazis. I highly recommend this book to all book lovers; it is sure to enthrall everyone.
    My favorite of the year
I go through several books a week. As soon as I finish one, I am ready with the next. The Orphan's Tale made me stop, wait, think and want to absorb it before I went on to the next book. I'll admit I am interested in books about WWII and oddly, about historic circus life. This was a fascinating blend of the two, so I was in heaven! This is a book I wish I'd written...the writing, the plot, the characters...I didn't want it to end. Do yourself a favor and read this one.
    Hope, Faith and Love
I would like to thank the Publishers, HarperCollins, Mira, and Harlequin Enterprises Limited, as well as Pam Jenoff for the Advanced Readerâs Edition of âThe Orphanâs Taleâ by Pam Jenoff.
This has to be one of my favorite Pam Jenoffâs novels. The historical fiction novel takes place during World War Two, and the Holocaust. This is a turbulent and devastating period in history. Pam Jenoffâs description of the isolation and depravity of the towns and villages as well as the attitudes of people during this time period is extraordinary and exceptional.
The author has been so ambitious in weaving her tale, there is so much to absorb. One of the main characters, Noa,gets pregnant by a German soldier, and is forced to give up her baby. Noaâs family is intolerant and throws her out, where she is forced to clean near a railway station.
