As the evidence piles against him, he realises someone has set him up. In a deadly game, Markham has to battle to keep his client and himself alive. All he can rely on are his wits and the rusty skills he acquired during his National Service in military intelligence.

Light Holiday Read
An easy to read suspense novel which I read while on holiday.
The character were believable although a little unlikely.
I love you work Chris and look forward to reading much ...
Chris Nickson, how you invoke memories. Many is the time my friends and I have spent our lunch times 'people-watching' in and around Briggate, in the early-mid 50's.
We never dared venture into any of the jazz-clubs of an evening though, most óutrageous' thing we did drink frothy coffee in the Flamenco Coffee Bar with some foreign students. How decadent was that?
I love you work Chris and look forward to reading much more

Another great book
I am an unashamed groupie. If you know Chris's work you will be well rewarded. If anything this book is his best, the characters' plot and setting simply dovetail with an eased professionalism.
If you are new to Chris's work - be warned. You are about to become addicted.
My first Markham.
Brings back memories of Leeds as I knew it. Some loose ends at the finish. My first Markham but I will try more- and more Nottingham too.
Raymond Chandler Transposed to mid-Fifties Leeds
Set in 1954, DARK BRIGGATE BLUES focuses on Dan Markham, a private investigator accustomed to divorce cases (at a time when the laws in Britain only allowed couples to separate if they were caught in flagrante delicto) that normally involve his tailing one of the partners and photographing them - or finding other evidence of their infidelities.
When a beautiful young woman, Joanna Hart, comes to his seedy office and offers him a retainer to investigate another divorce case, Markham accepts, and becomes unwittingly involved in a plot of Byzantine complexity involving a seedy car salesperson, members of MI5 past and present, assorted low-lifes whom he encounters in seedy pubs, a bent police officer, and a girlfriend who teaches at the local art college.
There are strong echoes of Raymond Chandler in DARK BRIGGATE BLUES, ranging from the seedy atmosphere of mid-Fifties Leeds, to the cynical cops who have a strong antipathy towards the protagonist, and Markham's naive belief in retributive justice that persists despite his being beaten up at least three times and having two of his fingers permanently damaged. Author Chris Nickson is no Chandler when it comes to style, but he has an ability to tell a good story in short, staccato paragraphs with a satisfyingly convincing climax.
Sociologically speaking DARK BRIGGATE BLUES recreates an era when jazz was all the rage: many of the classic American artistes' records were only just becoming available on vinyl, while British musicians were just beginning to break through.
