    Fantastic Sci-Fi Novel
I thought this book was extremely well done. I enjoy Flinx's personality. Although he does have a special "talent", it is his intelligence that gets him through most of the adventures in this book and I love a protagonist with a brain. :)
    AWESOME
This is a really great read, err. listen. I could hardly stop listening. Must read for any sci-fi or fantasy fan.

    Great read
A good start to the series
Alan Dean Foster's style has always been to start a story with an interesting yet plausible premise then direct it to an ever and ever outrageous conclusion. The funny thing is, as you get sucked into the story you never quite see how outrageous it has become. This was not the first book he wrote in this series, but it is the start of the story line. Therefor Foster had to fit the story within pre-existing story restrictions. It was well done and tidy, not needing to have read other stories to understand this one, and not feeling like there was no ending.

    Entertaining
Perhaps, my expectations were a bit high?
But I definitely enjoyed the book, and confirm my point I will read the next one.
    Swashbuckling at Storytime.
This second book in the series was, I felt, FAR more in line with the Aubrey-Maturin (sp) source material, with a lot more starship combat AND shore-time intrigue. It would be a rousing read, I have no doubt. However, once again Victor Bevine's voice lends itself more to the calm cadences of bedtime tales than to the derring-do of Leary, Mundy, and their compatriots. He's good, and it's not enough to stop me from downloading the next book as soon as I finished this one, but I would like to have had more energy, more gusto, out of at least the tense, action-packed moments with which the novel abounds.
This RCN Series is addicting so far..
I find Book 2 better then 1. I like the author don't spend too much time building in new characters which make the story move smoother and easier to understand.
I also found the narrator's voice to be excellent and easy on the ear. Though I prefer a female voice Victor Bevine is great on these books. If you like David Weber
Honor Harrington Series you should like this. Got to go back to finish the Harrington
series first then I'll be starting the RCN Series.
    Average, but entertaining.
While I believe that David Drake read the Aubrey-Maturin books by Patrick O'brian, I'm not sure he understood what about character interaction between Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin made the books so great.
It's clear that he has aped the style, as was his intention, and as long as you aren't expecting Aubrey-in-space, then this series is perfectly fine. It's entertaining, written well enough that I'm not cringing throughout, and I enjoyed it.
I wish he hadn't mentioned anything about O'Brian's series, because it's difficult not to contrast the two now, but the RCN books stand on their own well enough.
Unlike everyone else who has listened to this series I didn't have a problem with the narrator.
If you are looking for a better-than-average series (unlike this very average one) in a similar vein, the Honor Harrington series by David Weber is far superior, and can also be found here on Audible.

Good Sci Fi Detail and excellent story
lf you like a military type science fiction that does detailed character, political and historical development, this is a fantastic listen.
    Exquisite Techo Sci-Fi
I tend to consume 2 - 4 audio books per month, I consider myself and avid Sci-Fi fan and this book was fantastic !
    Good detailed military sci-fi
The story is a military one, set in space, in the future. The author is clearly a marine-ophile since every second or third paragraph contains a snippet of marine history or a description of how wonderful marines are. Of course, the author didn't refer to them as the U.S. Marines because in this future the US is (theoretically) just part of a planetary federation; in reality, however, the whole Federation is American in nature.
Of course, this doesn't make the story bad at all... as long as you're aware that it has a North American perspective on everything, is very military, and has a very Marines-are-King attitude. That and the author likes to give the make, model and serial number (and color too, sometimes) of every technical item from the armor to the alien's hibernation chambers.
The aliens are cool, the details are great, the story is engaging. Even the narrator is good. And, although this is book one in a series, the story stands completely alone and is satisfactorily wrapped up in the end.
    Amazingly detailed
Incredible detail and suspenseful narration are what distinguish this long novel of space warfare and strategy. Cool Borg-like aliens also.
    decent long on model numbers
the story is good and i will download the next book. but he goes on and on with the model numbers and jargan that i lost my place a couple of times. lost track of the characters if i could not give it more than an hour a listen. love the narrator though..

How would you digest the fruits of knowledge??
You know how you sometimes wish you did something different after some event has happened.. well Robert J. Sawyer explores this here.
Based around a group of scientists who are conducting an experiment at CERN (the place where they have a massive collider running thats SO large it spans 3 different boarders/countries) in Switzerland. The results are not as they expect..
What would be your path in life if.. for 2 mins, you could see 20 years in to the future.. would you be with that person you thought you loved? If not, how would that affect you today... with that person you're with now... hhmm.. how does fore knowledge affect your daily decisions in life??
As with his other books - the science behind his stories are not outrageous, indeed they are scientifically sound (reference to SCI-FI weekly). Enjoy it, its a great story..
If you enjoyed this I would recommend one of his other books: Terminal Experiment.
    real Science fiction
This is not Sci-Fi, this is Science fiction at it's best. I have not seen the t.v. series, but the book makes me want to watch. The miles past by so quick as I listened to this book. I usually like to listen to NPR in the morning and then listen to a book, but I kept finding reasons to leave NPR and listen to this book. The science is not over your head and RS keeps your interest all the way. It is not a time travel book, it is a glimpse into the future and the results that causes and there are some very interesting causes. RS is the Asimov of our age.
    The story drew me in
First of all, I must preface these comments by stating up front that I'm not a big science fiction fan. I do find the concept of time travel interesting so reading a synopsis and the fact that it was on sale drew me in. The premise, that during a scientific phenomenon, the entire world sees 21 years into the future was interesting. I thought, "How could a 2 minute glimpse of the future seriously effect the lives of today?" I suppose that is what grabbed me and the mental processes that go through everyone's mind as a result intrigued me. I listened to this one and found myself looking for excuses to get away from everyone so I could find out what happened next. The science portion of this book, which is actually relatively small, interested me much less than the human aspect. The end had a few bizarre twists that made me roll my eyes, but on the whole I enjoyed the read.
    Enjoyed Every Minute!
I like this kind of science-fiction and this was right up my alley!
I was hooked on the TV series when it aired in 2009 / 2010 and was left dangling at the end when it was abruptly cancelled.

"Jennifer Van Dyck keeps the story exciting as she recounts each find, telling of artifacts that are much older than anything Indiana Jones ever got his hands on. Jack McDevitt himself reads the introduction." (AudioFile)
    Members Reviews:
Great mix of sci-fi, mystery and adventure.
These books remind me of a mix of Sherlock Holmes and Indiana Jones thrown into a sci-fi setting. (A mystery story set in the future, with an antiquities dealer as the main protagonist.) In this universe the human race has been in space for about 20,000 years. In that time many ships, colonies and valuable items have gone missing. Alex Benedict, with the help of Chase Kolpath, specializes in finding missing and valuable items.
Seeker is the story of Margolia, a lost colony that disappeared long ago and has become a legend much like modern day Atlantis. One of the interesting concepts in the book, and McDevitt's writing, is the use of computer generated avatars of long dead people that are recreated through what is left behind and known of the person. In this case, Harry Williams the founder of the lost colony is used to help with the search. While he does not know where the colony is, or what happened to it, the avatar allows Benedict and Kolpath to get some unique perspectives on the colony and its foundation. In the end the avatar becomes a very sympathetic character.
This is a fun, quick book offers many twist and turns with a very satisfactory ending. Although it is the third book in Jack McDevitt's Alex Benedict series, these books can be read completely independent of each other.
    credit worthy
Just finished listening to this a second time and enjoyed it just as much. Jennifer Van Dyck is the perfect narrator for Chase Kolpath.
If you want non-stop action, you are probably best off watching an action movie while sitting on your couch instead of listening to an audiobook while operating a moving vehicle. The suspense in this book builds up slowly and with convincing detail so that by the time Chase is fending off the villains, you are right there with her. And while the narrow escapes keep you on the edge of your seat, the actual puzzle that Benedict is solving (with Chase's sometimes reluctant help) engages your attention.
***A note on listening order*** There are currently 5 books in this series. Jennifer Van Dyck is the audio narrator for three of them: Polaris, Seeker, and The Devil's Eye. The order doesn't matter for Polaris and Seeker, but you should listen to Seeker before starting The Devil's Eye. All three are good listens, as is Omega from the McDevitt's other series.
Also, while the last book, Echo, has another narrator, McDevitt's website has the following information:
"The Tantor audio edition of Echo was inadvertently recorded using a male voice.

    Members Reviews:
    Fascinating, unique story deftly narrated
Kudos to Recorded Books for creating a line of audio books written and narrated by people of color.
Nalo Hopkinson's first novel shows exceptional powers of imagination and compassion. Her ear for dialect is superb (well, based on my limited knowledge of dialect) and the narration brings it alive. I am a little disappointed that the narrator is male, since the author and main protagonist are female, but it's a minor complaint.
Note that as it is a horror genre book, there's a lot of violence and torture.
If you like Neil Gaiman's works, especially Anansi Boys, you'll like this book.
    Heavy Heavy!!
What did you love best about Brown Girl in the Ring?
I appreciate the story on all of its levels. It presented so many issues. Social and Political, modern practice of ancestral practices, connecting with spirits, poverty, crime.... all exist in this story centered around one woman's quest to find herself.
This story was colorful, heartfelt. Warm and cold.
What did you like best about this story?
The story definitely has elements that challenge the western approach to healing and living. It does so in a way that does not demonize those who practice it.
I love the Author's descriptive writing style, I can connect to the story and all my senses are activated.
Have you listened to any of Peter Jay Fernandezs other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have never listened to Peter Jay Fernandez, and he is amazing! The story is written in a patois and he performs it in a way that is still understandable.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
The line in the sand has been drawn.... which side are you on?
    Any additional comments?
I actually picked up this book a few years ago at the library and I was distracted by other books; I couldn't get through it. I'm glad I found it in this form because it is truly enjoyable.
    Almost 5 stars
    Any additional comments?
I think this story was really something special, even though throughout the first half of the book I wondered if this was the work of a talented, but then inexperienced author. I wondered this because the first half was marked by a lack of sensory detail. I like stories that put me in the setting and let me feel what is happening. The atmosphere here wasn't incredibly immersive, and also the author kept using the same figure of speech to describe character's emotional reactions again and again (everybody's always sucking their teeth in disgust, or sucking their teeth to show some other negative emotion, it gets weird). I thought the story skimped on detail fairly often, though not in a way that crippled it. Altogether, once it gets going this is a really cool story. It's culturally immersive and graceful and full of cool voodoo stuff.

But in those years, the Cylons developed new Cylons that looked and acted like humans, with one goal in mind: to destroy all humanity! When they suddenly attacked the Twelve Worlds, humanity's extinction seemed inevitable.
Only a single warship survived the massive attack: Battlestar Galactica, the oldest ship in the fleet, ready to be decommissioned and turned into a museum. Commander William Adama, himself set to retire, had but one course: to marshal the meager forces available, a ragtag crew of misfits and green recruits, to prevent their enemy from wiping out the last vestiges of the human race. But the Cylons, stronger, smarter, and driven to destroy their creators, may just be too powerful for them and all of humanity to survive.

    The miniseries, written
This audiobook is indeed the first few episodes of the (new) BSG. The narrator was very effective. This book was actually a good thing for me -- I bought this first, and then was enticed to go watch the series. It hooked me, and I am glad I heard this, as it helped fill in some backstory history (better than the TV episodes did), and provided some additional personality to the characters. Of course, like the ongoing tv series, don't expect any nicely wrapped up conclusion, just a story arc.
If you watch BSG, and don't like hearing the same story twice, then don't buy this, you will be bitter if you do.
But BUY this if you don't mind hearing the start of the story again, this time with a little more colour. And I highly recommend this to anyone who isn't watching the new series, but is interested in what it is all about -- it will set the stage nicely.
Where is: "The Rest of the story"!
What made the experience of listening to Battlestar Galactica the most enjoyable?
Just sitting back spinning up the FTL drive and enjoy.
What other book might you compare Battlestar Galactica to and why?
Not a frakin one. No really, I was around when this story was one T.V. with that guy that sells dog. This time around was totally different. Twisted!
Have you listened to any of Jonathan Daviss other performances before? How does this one compare?
Mr Davis's makes sure each character glow with; his, special tonallity of performance.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Keep watchin it over; you will get it.
    Any additional comments?
MORE! MORE! MORE! Yes would like to see the rest of the story put to audio. And if is you have my credit. Thanks
