Excellent - highly recommended!
I've read dozens of books about Buddhism, Cognitive Therapy, and other methods of reducing suffering, and highly recommend this book. I purchased "Free Yourself" after hearing Carolyn speak recently, and it has given me a new understanding of how and why we suffer. She's extremely wise, an excellent writer, and speaks eloquently about the far reaching effects of unconscious conditioning. She explains how our minds are a constant storyteller, and how it saps our peace and joy. "What story am I telling myself?" has become part of my daily life. She provides excellent (and easy) practices for embracing your wise heart. I'll be rereading my many highlighted pages of this wonderful book in years to come!
I read the book again...
A friend first gave me a copy of "Free Yourself" a little over a year ago. I read the entire book at the time and methodically practiced the "heart tools" found at the end of each chapter. I was blown away by the power of Carolyn's words and found myself completely engaged in the process of self-discovery. I recently felt called to grab the book off the shelf again and oddly enough immediately flipped to Chapter 5, "Your Compassionate Heart." I've been struggling with care-giving an elderly parent and have found myself easily losing patience and worried sick about my mother's health and well-being. Clearly I was letting my mind run wild with fear. Carolyn's soft and tender words directed me back to my breath and helped me open my heart. This book is never far from my grasp.
