just finished this book twice! this is the most helpful book I have ever listened to esp for what I'm going through now, so it hits home for me. I love how the author shares his story it was very courageous to be so honest, and relatable. i've learned a new way to view life, the pressures to conform to society, how to forgive and move on. it makes you think what is real. this book is inspirational and life changing. the song at the end by felicia farerre is beyond beautiful and stuck in my head for days. go get this book right now everyone should read it at least twice. xo

Very Inspirational and Practical

I am a songwriter and musician, but have of late wanted to write a book. I was looking for a mentor, someone who has traveled this road of 'creativity' as well as the "secret" of endless inspiration (not too tall an order? do 'ya think?). Much to my delight, Jan affirms that my muse is accessible to me any moment of any day...I have only to make a commitment to meet with her faithfully.

The thing I love most about this lecture series is that Jan tells many personal stories that occurred during the process in becoming who she knew she always was...a writer and a photographer. She is an excellent speaker and willingly shares with her audience the apparent 'two steps backward' that seemed to accompany her each step forward (but alas, it is ALL progress in the end!). I appreciate her humility and transparency--sometimes lacking in speakers who tend to not mention all the hurdles, second jobs, rejection letters, etc. that have lined their paths to the present. Her sense of humor is endearing and her childlike passion is contagious. I plan to give a copy to my sister, I know she will love it!!

Comforting Advice from a Wise Friend

I listen to Jan's tapes during my workout. I feel so much comfort and inspiration from her words I don't want to stop pedalling! But I do stop the tape to quickly jot down a thought or two to spark my own writing practice.

Encouraging book for creatives; good for group discussion

I really enjoyed Kent's book. It's a book you can read in chunks as you need some encouragement, inspiration or the occasional kick in the pants!

Kent covers topics alphabetically from the dreaded "blank page" to doubt, failure, critics, the mind, old things, love, etc. There are discussion questions at the end of each chapter. While questions are helpful to answer individually, I see the benefit of getting a group of creatives together to discuss them. The conversation, growth and encouragement could be incredibly encouraging, especially as we creatives can spend a lot of time doing our art!

This book is geared for creatives in general- painters, designers, musicians, writers, speakers, etc., but the topics are specific to the struggles and needs we have. There are also several links within the ebook to other helpful resources.

A wonderful companion!

A book I will carry with me both literally and metaphorically, for this wee book offers huge encouragements and guidance. Packed with wisdom, the book spurs us onward with clarion calls to live the life authentic and true, always offering one's very best. It reads as if Kent knows so well your own creative heart and calling; he speaks into the deep places with clarity and conviction. The questions for reflection are very useful, as are the ideas and resources offered throughout. Here is realism and optimism hand in hand, taking you and I by the hand to our creative sources and tasks for today and tomorrow. Both pragmatic and philosophical, this book is now firmly tucked into my pocket! I absolutely loved this book! Rather than the usual "bloat" that many similar volumes contain, the author has boiled his advice and insights down to only the most valuable components. Every page is rich with meaning and purpose.

Sage success advice we can ALL use

I've read a lot of books designed to help me guide my mind and my actions to a more successful place, but none of them have been like Mike's. If you read his daily blog you know his writing style is both introspective and eye-opening. "I'd never thought of it like that" is a phrase that constantly comes to mind as Mike approaches success from every angle, willing to turn over every rock and imagine which habits help us succeed and which habits hold us back.

I've particularly enjoyed the exercises in this book, calling me to look get my hands dirty and really look at the stories I tell myself AND what my version of success looks like. It's so eye-opening success truly means many different things to everyone and it is our JOB to know our story and work toward it.
