  • Getting Fiery with An Ember in The Ashes

This week on Getting Literate, Katie and Julia venture into the YA fantasy/Roman-inspired world of An Ember in The Ashes, lamenting unsexy protagonists, and thirsting over sexy side-characters, and appreciating the fuck out of a well-crafted villain. Katie will always think the villain is kinda sexy, and Julia can't escape a childhood-besties-to-romantic-entanglement arc. PLUS: love diamonds, Pakistani folk lore, and shitty giftbags. As always, there's definitely spoilers, so proceed with caution.

Julia really hated all the pedophilia in this book, and Katie thinks maybe Margaret Atwood wrote Aunt Lydia as a self-insert character. PLUS: being morally against missionary work, Wuthering Heights crossovers, and trains stuck in mudslides. As always, there's definitely spoilers, so proceed with caution.

The gals chat about gossipy bitches, whether or not Heathcliff is black, and all of the mental illness that runs rampant in this novel. Julia attempts to decode her drunken self's writing about weak male characters, while Katie struggles with just knowing which character was speaking when. PLUS: dying after walking 4 miles, the pros and cons of metafiction, and "ejaculate" as the worst verb to ever exist. As always, there's definitely spoilers, so proceed with caution.

Julia draws parallels between this and other classic works, while Katie struggles with relating way too much to the plot. PLUS: sex that isn't sexy, Perks of Being a Wallflower (Stargirl, if ya nasty), and the manic pixie dream girl. As always, there's definitely spoilers, so proceed with caution.

  • Getting Religious with The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle

This week on Getting Literate, Katie and Julia take a little trip to purgatory, a.k.a trying to remember whether you’re reading the UK or US edition of a book. The gals chat about the horrifying goodness of plague doctors, shitty twists for the sake of twists, and who should have actually been killed off. Julia rants about sins and poignant wisdom of Drama Religion class, while Katie doesn’t like reading books written by men. PLUS: Hayao Miyazaki knows best, women as plot points, and gaslighting girlbosses who gatekeep gatehouses. As always, there's tons of spoilers, so proceed with caution.

  • Getting Nostalgic for Twilight

This week on Getting Literate Katie and Julia have a blast to the past and re-read Twilight for the first time in 10 years, and discuss not realizing the extreme and glaring issues that they were ignorant at the tender age of 12. Older, wiser, woke-er, and bitter, the gals wonder what Stephanie Meyer hates more: women or food? Julia’s Italian background splatters like spaghetti on the wall, and Katie would like to know why Edward believes in God. PLUS: is Bella toddler-coded, why is Noah’s Flood a part of Indigenous theology, and is Bella’s clumsiness the real star of this book?As always, there's definitely spoilers, so proceed with caution.

  • Getting Into Shadow and Bone

This week on Getting Literate, Katie and Julia tackle YA fantasy's eternal question: Have you ever met a teenage girl? The gals talk about the merits of bullying your main character, the whininess of adolescence, and being "not like other girls" (but sometimes its true). Katie thinks it's icky to date someone you grew up with, and Julia makes a fantastic case for getting some distance from first person POV. PLUS: reflections on how annoying teen girls are, imjockster syndrome (imposter syndrome for jocks), the purity paradigm, and how to have a hot girl Grisha summer. As always, there's definitely spoilers, so proceed with caution.
