Good listen for kids on a car trip

We all enjoyed this title on our last car trip. The main characters are children (12 yrs. and 8 yrs., if I recall) and the premise is suitable for all ages. If you're riding with kids, you might also take a look at Hoot, by Carl Hiassen. We enjoyed Hoot slightly better than Williwaw.

Extremely enjoyable book

This is one of the most enjoyable stories I've come across on Audible. Trying to soak up some books related to Alaska before a trip planned for summer 2013, and this ended up first on the list. Audio quality seemed a little less than on most other audiobooks I've listened to on Audible. This was more than made up for with Tom Bodett's delivery, and his engaging and accessible story. A great storyteller and I'll be checking out other works by Mr. Bodett in the future. A very familiar voice in the narration as well - if you've heard the Motel 6 commercials, you've bumped into Mr. Bodett. This is one of those books I couldn't wait to resume each time I got back to my mp3 player.

One for the whole family

You will get thoroughly engrossed in the adventures of Ivan and September. The teens are admirably self-reliant, but oh, so young in their misjudgements. The book vividly describes the people and locale of coastal Alaska. This tale will appeal to both adults and children.

Starts out slow but, wow what a climax!

I absolutely adore Tom Bodett: his voice, his writing, his humor, & his storytelling.

I was very impressed with this long story about September & Ivan. Even though it started out quite slow & possibly even boring... Which I'm sure the author was going for - the day to day tedium of Alaska homestead life.

The climax brought tears to my eyes. Wonderful tale!

The audio recording isn't as sharp & clear as some of his other works but, it was well worth it.

Poor production quality - good, not great story

This is not a series of stories like other Bodett listens I've found. It is a short novel that follows a couple of young kids who live in the wilderness of Alaska, and have to fend for themselves while their dad is away.

This was very captivating and charming, once you get passed the crapping recording quality.

My only real gripe with the novel is that the ending was a bit of a let down. It is a bit too predictable, and the kids act in ways that are out of character.

Still worth the listen, though. The ending wasn't horrible, it just wasn't great.

If you like the other BSG books, then you will like this story as well. However, this book is not read by the same women who take on the characters in the other main Beacon Street Girls stories. This reader is ok, but she comes across as flat compared to the quality of the reading in the rest of the series.

Clear Understanding

This book is very easy to follow and gives a clear understanding of what sparked the war and which sides the various countries were on. Very interesting and a great read.

Good but too short

What made the experience of listening to The War to End All Wars: World War I the most enjoyable?

Overall the book is engaging and covers the basics. But that is about all. It really left me wanting. Even in the way it covered the basic information of World War I, I would've liked it to go into a bit more depth, or even a little commentary about those events Freedman touches on.

Beautiful.

I read the first, Husky, in 2 days via audiobook. I read the second in about 7 hours while doing yoga, cleaning the kitchen, and crying at seemingly random intervals to the outside observer. the book is 6h8min long in this format, but, shavasana.

I can't speak to the accuracy of the portrayal of a girl like Sophie. Shes 13, I'm 32. She's mixed race, I'm white. She's she, I'm he. she's from the city, I'm from a strip mall turned into a small city. etc. I *can* say that the tears came from messages I didn't know I'd always craved (or TOTALLY knew, but cried to hear them anyway), but which made absolute sense to the characters' contexts as well.

The two books together are interconnected coming of age stories that make the difficult parts of life actually less difficult by dispensing with euphemism and sugar coating. I highly recommend them.

Pretty, and her Husky predecessor are both Beautiful.

Guileless, Hopeful, Terrifying and Poignant

Pretty is a book that sneaks up on you. Told from the perspective of a teenage girl, Sophie, it reads almost matter of factly, allowing for the illusion of emotional distance. But as the reality of the Soohie's situation starts to sink in, and the casualness with which she confronts her everyday nightmare begins to buckle, her trauma will have wrapped itself around your lungs, and all you'll want to do is keep reading until you know that she will be okay; so you will be okay. I found myself verklempt reading this several times this week, usually on the bus... It's not what I expected, and I don't think it's what Sophie would have expected, but I'm glad I experienced it.

I really identified with Sayre's Husky, feeling like he really understood something about the adolescence of a child who is earnest, quirky, and struggling to come to terms with his sexuality. With Pretty, Sayre proves that he truly understands the private struggles of a child coming of age in a dysfunctional setting and struggling to make sense of social relations.

A man in love......maybe

Would you consider the audio edition of What to Buy the Shadowhunter Who Has Everything (And You're Not Officially Dating Anyway) to be better than the print version?

I think any audio version is better then the print version. I feel more into the story with the audio version.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Magnus. How could it not be. But the demon was pretty funny.

What does Jordan Gavaris bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

I don't get the story behind the characters when I read a book. I mean the feeling in the voices like when I hear the audio book.

I loved the way Magnus worried on what to get Alex. I loved this point of view on how Magnus feels for Alex. Its soooo sweet. I just hope in the next book he can forgive Alex and they get together.

A book that can help create peace

I bought this book for my local library. It is my hope that more understanding of Islamic and all wisdom traditions will be a catalyst for peace. jv

it wasn't super in-depth, and thus a quick

I am a follower of Jesus Christ who recently moved to a Middle Eastern country. I am also homeschooling my kids for the first time. It was important to me that I understood the religion and the culture of the people whose country we are guests in. I also wanted to be able to teach the basics of Islam to my three older children so they would be understading and respectful of the people here. I found this book to be very helpful and because it was written for teenagers, it wasn't super in-depth, and thus a quick, easy read. I think it was geared more towards the Muslim population in the United States, but I still found it helpful with our family situation overseas in a Muslim country.

Very interesting!

Great Book - Relevant to your teens and betweens

This is a good book for young children who are born and growing in the western world. I grew up in England and the US and had a hard time understanding and connecting Islam to my daily life, especially since I was being taught Islam the same way my parents had learned back home.

My two teenage daughters are going through the same struggle and I found this book to be enjoyable not only for me but for my girls as well. They got it...

I would recommend this book to parents who have children born and are being raised in the west.

A book kids need to read

Sumbul Ali-Karmali, with Growing Up Muslim, has provided young readers with an easy to read, concise explanation of all things Muslim, from what Muslims eat and wear to the history of this peaceful religion. I had hoped, when I chose the book, that it would cover more of how Muslim children deal with and encounter things in school, and the book touches on that, but not in the detail I wanted. But it has a lot of answers to questions young readers might have about this religion that has been reviled by so many because people who are quick to equate all of Islam with a small group of radical terrorists. Islam itself is a peaceful religion and is based on the idea of doing good deeds. And it is an extension of Judaism and Christianity, not a completely different religion. In fact, the Allah that Muslims worship is the same God of Judeo-Christian tradition. The word Allah is the Arabic word for God, and even Christians in Arabic-speaking countries call God âAllah.â So the world is not so huge after all, and this book proves it to kids who need to know this.

Narrator is annoying

Narrator was annoying that she pronounced names differently through the book. Sometimes it was Madge sometimes Mage. It was like that for most names. She also paused at awkward places.
