Fantastic book

I absolutely love this book, I preferred her other book which I think was called 'cookery school' however this was brilliant as well.

I think Nicky is such a brilliant writer, I lose myself completely in her books and I love that.

I have now purchased all of her books and cannot wait to read them. Her descriptions of Italy's views and food are amazing and you just want to fly their and have a holiday.

I have absolutely no hesitating this book I thoroughly enjoyed it as you can tell lol.

Could not relate

I feel bad to say it, but I didn't enjoy it at all. I listened it till the end tho. My biggest issue was that all characters seemed unacceptable for me - I'd never keep contact with anyone so dull, stupid, selfish etc etc. and all characters were like that.

In epilogue it was said that book was suppose to make reader laugh a bit - I didn't crack a smile even once.

Nothing like the blurb. It gets off to such a slow start then just doesn't really move on. I got the impression that the writer had a good idea but then had to fill the book up with additional words to meet some sort of quota.

Just not funny at all.

my street - I love novelty and this book had it. Helen Lederer - you are a natural at story telling - more please!

Enjoyable, quite funny, missing links spoil story

This book was funny and the character of Milly charms and resonates with many women of a certain age I should think. Overall there was a bit too much skipping over the difficulties she was having and whole chunks of time passed in a paragraph or two where things had got resolved 'magically'. The last chapter is a case in point and totally jars.

I've listened to Anthony Heald, but not the other. Heald's performance as JFK is impressive.

Lyndon Johnson. I'd ask him why he helped JFK out as much as he did.

M R JAMES CLASSIC HAUNTING IS SUPERB

I have this in a drama version which makes the hairs on my back stand up! So was delighted to find this reading.

David Collins is a perfect narrator for the MR James collection. He has just the right amount of tempo and and knows how to project the right M R James style incorporating the warmth and atmosphere which brings to life the haunting images that are so important in all M R James writings.

David Collins brings out the characters in this story, even his interpretation of the stuck up wife is excellent, the way she nags her poor husband in such a manner that he agrees that what ever it be that she needs him to do for her, must indeed take precedent's over what ever project was important to him. Her dominance is her weakness and she is in for a big surprise.

M R James works are some of the best hauntings in English Literature. There are no computer graphics, ridiculous over bearing music, no foul language nor violence, just good plain English words worked beautifully into a poetic intricate web digging deep into the mind where we can easily conjure up the creepy scenes he wants us to see and feel, so much we believe we are part of the image.

Sincere and gentle story about leaving home to live abroad. It will be most appreciated by people who had a similar experience. Still it won't leave a single reader indifferent.

An enticing love story with a disappointing end

I loved this audio book from beginning to..well the penultimate chapter. This is more in relation to the story itself and not at all about the performance of the speaker whom I have found superb!! I would recommend it simply for that already!

Sadly the storyline seems to drift - it's an unsatisfactory ending leaving us "hanging" - Alish was portrayed as the good girl and turned out to be not so nice and less principled after all - which is not only disappointing but also rather puzzling as I had thought that her character development had already reached its peak - but maybe I just believe that every good book should have an even better ending. And that was not the case here.

Irishwoman abroad

Beautifully narrated. I found it hard to stop listening to it. Transported to an earlier time when life was lived at a slower pace, even in New York. But the problems of relationships remain the same whatever the era. I came to this novel via Norah Webster, his latest, and was interested to find mention of her in this. Would love a further instalment of this very Irish community.

Beautiful book that has come to life

Loved this book, a great story, a romance with grit. The book is brought to life by the mellifluous Irish lilt of the narrator.
