The writing is clever and funnyand just a little sad. The fun is in his deadpan observances of the adults in Franciss world, their quirks, contradictions, and vanities, that bring them to life. French Canadian Catholic familyvery true to life.

A compelling read that sucks you in (4.5)

How do you write a coming-of-age story when both of your protagonists have been through more than most adults?

'Wake' is a sometimes painful, often compelling story about two teenagers who form a reluctant friendship. Jem is a pariah in his school - a cancer patient, newly in remission, who makes his classmates uncomfortable with his sickly appearance and prickly demeanor. Willa is the newly returned girl to town - popular, but with a painful and dark past stemming from her sister's death from cancer. Willa's experiences give her unique insight into Jem, much to his dismay.

What follows is an all-too-real push and pull between two people who barely like each other, put together in an evolving and devolving relationship as they learn each others' secrets. It's a slow start, but once you get involved, it's difficult to put down. It's fascinating to watch these characters drag each other out into the light. Willa is intent on 'killing' Jem's notion of who he is. Jem realizes he has to help Willa see that she is not her mistakes. There are points that will make you want to cry and others when you want to smack them in the back of the head. The important thing is that you feel for them - the story feels and hurts in a genuine way.

My favorite thing about this book are the exchanges of dialogue. It's the first thing I truly appreciated about it on the first read (I've read it cover-to-cover twice, which is saying something considering the length). Mattina writes dialogue that not only sounds real, but is also structured in such a way that it doesn't feel like repetitive "he said, she said," or abuses the use of character names to lead the reader from speaker to speaker. There are also some bits that are just funny as hell.

On the negative side of things, I wish this had gone through one more pass with an editor.

-It is long, and could have probably benefited from some paring down. However, as a reader, I would be loathe to perform that task myself. Excising any part of the narrative would be a difficult task in general, but in dealing with a story as compelling and well-written as this, it becomes nearly impossible.

-There are several instances where there are typos (word skips), etc. Granted, they're all minor, minor errors. Unfortunately, there are enough of them that it takes away the polish on a great book. It's the only thing, in my mind, that shows the difference between this being an indie production, versus not having gone through the 'traditional' process.

Will it work out in the end?

This was a really interesting concept, and as such, keeps you intrigued right until the end.

The small town Americana is reminiscent of Richard Russo's writing without the bittersweet comedy. Various inhabitants have been receiving phone calls from "heaven". The chief of police is most reluctant to believe the growing hype, until his dead son gets in touch.

There were quite a lot of characters introduced which made it tricky at times to keep up; but the use of Alexander Graham Bell's timeline of inventing the phone at the start of each chapter was genius, and gave you a wee chance to stop and take stock of who was who!

Not what you would expect.....

Another great story from Mitch Albom. Not quite as good as the Time Keeper, but he has a way of writing which is unique to him. There is a distinct meloncoly to the writing and by reading this himself he is able to bring the exact atmospher he wants to the book. This is a great story, sifting through the consequences of what would happen if a phone call from heaven were to happen. The realities and unrealities of people behaviour in such a circumstance and he takes the characters through as many events as he can encompassing emotions taken on by their actions and the consequences. There is a twist in the story bringing everything to what you might think is finality, but of course the reader has to make the final decision. Nicely read, he keeps the whole story flowing to its finale. Worth your money.

Disappointing half book was a recap of Kain & Abel

I eagerly purchased this sequel to Kain and Abel. BUT the first 23 chapters (over half the book) was devoted to a condensed version of Kain and Abel, before it got onto the story of the prodigal daughter. So this story could've been told in the 6 hours that were left of the audio book.

Sounds like Siri is reading it, good story though

OK, but not Kane and Abel

The follow up to Kane and Abel spends the first half of the book recapping that story through the eyes of Florentina, Abel's daughter and the heroine of this tale. Ultimately for me, that was more interesting than what followed. Fairly pedestrian in pace, unusually for Archer, and just not that much fun... Narration also very robotic. Overall, very average...

Great book

Great book. I was hesitant to read any more of Gardner because of his book "Grendel" which was scary weird - I could not get past first few pages. But this book is nothing like "Grendel". It is a pastoral novel.

Characters first, plot second, if that's not your thing, find another book.

Nickel Mountain is not very compatible with today's reader, but that doesn't make it a bad book by any stretch of the imagination. Gardner, above all things, was a master of character. His books are about people (or mythical monsters) and not about events or wild plots. The most common criticism of this book is that "nothing happens" which is an exaggeration but also isn't terribly far from the truth. There are a few surprises along the way but mostly it's about people's lives and how they change with time in an area that also changes.

Gardner was also a master at creating a constant flowing "dream" of images in the reader's mind, and his dancing sentences paint marvelous pictures throughout the book. Even without a highly intriguing plot I felt myself motivated to turn the pages because I was busy visualizing the scenes and I was curious to see what would become of the characters Gardner invented.

This is one of his earliest works and can't be properly compared to his later ones, but as a case study on characterization and character before plot, this is a book you should read.

A novel of the first caliber!

A delightful beginning to a distinguished career

BOSWELL isn't at accomplished as Elkin's later work, but it's more accessible to the new reader than GEORGE MILLS or THE FRANCHISER. Its broad comedy hides a deceptively deeply thought out work.

I have seen the light!

When I first began to read Boswell, I can honestly say that I thought it was dull and boring. What's the point of this book? is what I thought to myself. But as I read on, I began to see the light, the light of comedy in literature. Never before had an author used comedy so cleverly and and easily as Stanley Elkin does. His comedy is not only funny, but brilliant. he can take a three word sentence and turn it into a humorous event that has comedy and meaning. Not only was the comedy very good, but the stucture of the book was clever as well. Elkin would use different stratagies to keep the reader interested, such as interrupting the plot of the story with small stories that didn't really have anything to do with the story , but added humor and sometimes moral lessons. If you as well want ot see the light of comedy, I strongly recommend Boswell to you.

Humorous but...

also a little annoying. Elkin's original writing style, as well as the content, is what makes this novel funny, but it is also what makes this book annoying. Reading the book for my AP Composition class and paying attention more to style than actual content, I noticed that Elkin used several different literary techniques (as most writers do), but it's how he used and combined then that sets him apart form other writers. Elkin makes several plays on words and commmon phrases (such as having a character say, "the plot thickens" while working with clay) and at times uses very descriptive imagery, along with various allusions, hyperboles, and metaphors. While this all made the book interesting at the beginning, it gradually also became overwhelming as the book went on, and certain parts seemed unnecessary and dull.

A fine writer

I have read everything I can get by this writer, and wait expectantly for the next book she publishes each time. Ms. Hart brings each story alive, immediately, and the characters are so well developed that I remember them, unlike other mysteries I read. Always, her characters are full and rich..people you feel you know. They are not only believable, but human. They could be YOUR friends, co-workers and neighbors. THANK YOU Ellen Hart for continuing to write this series. How devoid the world is of well written mysteries with lesbian main characters. I hope that you continue developing Janes sexuality and do not lead her into a concept of lesbian barren-ness while developing heterosexual characters and sexuality as so many writers do. To get readers, I assume. Stay with character and truth.

The silence of a dark memory shared by war buddies starts to come alive. Sadly Jane becomes involved due to her father's latest interests. The secret of one death starts to multiply. A winning mystery.

Family relationships at the fore

Dandy, just dandy. I know this author quite well and I am fond of her. Some of you who read this will be aware that she and I tour together frequently as part of the Minnesota Crime Wave.

This is a terrific novel which may disturb some of Hart's long-standing fans. It's a darker, more disturbing novel than she's penned before, reacting, I suspect, to the state of the world today. But this novel is no polemic .

Far from Leavitt's greatest work

I'm wondering whether this is a different "David Leavitt". It's a bit painful to be honest. The way in which the main characters meet is a slapstick comedy of sorts, but not a good one. Peter's glasses are stepped on accidentally by Edward. As Peter is short sighted this leaves Peter effectively blind. From that point it's embarrassing how often Leavitt has Peter stumble and fall into Edward's manly arms (I think it's three times within this initial meeting). Once was too cliché. Three times...is pressing the point a little too hard. As this is the opening of the book it is difficult to forgive and move on.

The rest of the book has comedic elements with plenty of light comedy characters (in particular Iris's dog), but thankfully nothing as bad as that first piece.

The sexual attraction is never quite convincing. It's more awkward than anything else and it's difficult to find what Pete and Edward see in each other. Ditto the friendship between the two couples - they have very little in common & it's hard to imagine them wanting to spend time in each other's company.

The Lost Language of Cranes and Equal Affections are both significantly superior works by Leavitt - each is absolutely engaging and enjoyable. By comparison The Two Hotel Frankfort's is so flat. It picks up right at the very end, but it's too little, too late.

A Disappointment

The novel is set in a milieu that is ripe for deep consideration of issues of war, home, bigotry, fascism and faith, namely, Lisbon in the late 1930s, a city filled with refugees fleeing Europe and trying to find new countries to accept them. But the novel focuses instead on four shallow, silly people who act like spoiled teenagers out of Gossip Girls. The narrator is a car salesman; the other couple write mystery novels under a pseudonym. The characters are disengaged from the war and nearly oblivious to the tragedies around them, both in Lisbon and in Europe. No doubt there were plenty of dull, disengaged people trying to leave Europe at that time, but it's not something worth reading about. The audiobook narrator had a good sense of voice for the characters.

Follows White Trash Beautiful On-The-Road

A must-read after White Trash Beautiful. It adds new characters and develops a deeper story line but the angst and conflict wasn't there. The story continues in another book soon to come.

I absolutely love this series. It is certainly the most Cinderella like story of modern day.

Teresa Mummert takes us through the next stage as Tucker and Cass try to move along with their relationship, to the next level, after some extreme tragedies.

Being on the road the band is not as romantic as Cass anticipated, but at least she has a home within Tucker's arms.

This book dives into the main characters needs, but also explores some of the other stuff that people are going through. It seems Cass is a mini therapist, listening to everyone's problems and trying to help them get through it.

Tucker and Cass have a lot of insecurities, especially when the going gets tough and Cass & Tucker reflects on their past.

A book with a lot of fun but also has a deeper story/stories and resolutions or not.

Grace Grant's narration was near perfection. A talented performer and a five-star rating.
