Publisher's Summary:
Christian Greve is a photographer. He waves teddy bears at little children, arranges families like vases of flowers, and records graduations and dances for posterity. As a child, he was raised by a mother who thought he made a good mannequin to practice her makeup on... and a good plaything for her tricks.
Then Christian decides his fame as a photographer has been sabotaged by his models. They conspire against him, moving just enough to throw off his shots - laughing at him behind his back. When a chance encounter with two teenagers on the street escalates out of control, he takes matters into his own hands. People start to die.
Detective Tommy Doyle, known to the citizens of San Valencez California as "The Psychos 'r' Us" cop, finds himself with a growing string of dead bodies, some of the strangest clues he's ever run across, and very little time to find and stop a killer before the death toll rises.
This is the first full-length Tommy Doyle novel, following on the success of his debut in the novelette "Burning Bridges", published in the anthology All Hell Breaking Loose.
Members Reviews:
Creepy
I didn't get much past chapters two or three in this book. But not because it was a badly written book. Much to the contrary, Wilson is such a good writer that I was totally creeped out by the time I put it down, knowing I really didn't need to finish it because creepy things stick in my brain. If you have a strong constitution, I recommend this book. Someone can give me a spoiler by telling me how it ended.
Smile for the Camera, My Pretty
In a squalid little town in California lives an unhinged serial killer, a cocky entertainment provider and a determined detective. When these three come together, all hell breaks loose. This riveting novel will suck you in, make you part of the story and keep you there until the very end. David Niall Wilson paints his characters in ways that bring them to life. They get inside your head and live there, long after the book is finished.
Christian Greve is a demented photographer. He sees "visions" of his "models" in ways that will make you think twice before posing for pictures with just anyone. In his search to bring his perfect vision to life on camera, he comes across Hiram Gates, a rich, greedy man known for playing with the more demented side of life. Gates eventually provides Christian with models, which Greve kills to attain his perfect masterpiece. Only in death can he control them. Stakes rise when Hiram realizes his love for his long-time secretary and Christian realizes she is the epitome of perfection. Only through her can he achieve the vision in his head. She will make him famous.
As Christian kills, Tommy Doyle, a detective with a life-mission to hunt down the worst of what humans can do, and a determined, almost bull-dog mind-set, chases him. Christian has never been in trouble with the law. He taunts Doyle by leaving his fingerprints and DNA everywhere. Tommy cannot catch him. He stays one step behind. This just makes Tommy more tenacious. By the time he catches Christian, he is ready to just off the guy. He's prepared for the backlash. He's been through too much and Christian has tested his limits.
Sins of the Flash is well written.
