A good read for a vintage work that perfectly captures the tone of the 40s
A good read for a vintage work that perfectly captures the tone of the 40s. Venita has a great ear for the slang and just the whole smoky atmosphere and feel of a bygone area. Love the music she has playing in the background. And she writes like a dream.
An excellent piece of crime fiction: With a good dash of humor.
Book Review: "Dead On The Money" by Venita Louise.
Author, Venita Louise takes the reader on a journey back in time in her crime suspense novel..."Dead On The Money".
A time of innocence, a time before television, Bill Haley and his Comets and Elvis Presley. A time when the big bands of Artie Shaw and Glenn Miller were the musical heroes of a war torn generation.
The setting and research are so beautifully penned that the innocence or lack of it of the females that differentiated between Dames and Ladies are drawn with a masterful touch. The hairstyles of the men and women that people this novel, their clothing, and their dialogue are so perfect that there is no jarring sense of any other decade impeding.
It takes a clever hand to allow a reader impeded by the current technology to suspend disbelief so completely,
Author Venita Louise has not merely created a world of memories for folks that may remember those days, she has cleverly reconstructed a time and place that makes even the most tech savvy of us hunger for a time long gone. A time when the word Damn was uttered in a movie and caused shock waves throughout the viewing public.
Meet Hortense Olivia Tully a librarian and a beautiful woman, whose knack for getting into serious trouble keeps her male admirer Detective Tom Trask on his toes and confused by more than his growing need to have her in his life permanently.
Hortense or Olivia as she prefers to be known innocently hears the last words of a dying man, those words and their meaning begin a series of events including mistaken identity, kidnapping... attempted murder, and finally murder of a woman...I will not say who, that will spoil this well written book for you, and it's simply too enjoyable to do that.
The Dance clubs, torch singers, and fabulous period dialogue will enchant even the most hardened among readers.
If you want to take a trip down a lane you may have never walked before, take this one. It sparkles with humor, and impresses with its unfailingly excellent research and settings.
Love a good fast-paced read? Of course you do. "Dead On The Money" qualifies ...

Detroit, 1971. Holocaust survivor Harry Levin learns that his daughter has been killed in a car accident. The driver, a drunk German diplomat, has been released and afforded immunity; he will never face charges. So Harry is left with only one option - to discover the identity of this man, follow him back to Munich, and hunt him down.
Told with swagger, brutal humour, and not a little violence, Voices of the Dead follows a good man who is forced to return to the horrors of his past.

    A Man's Search for Justice
Voices of the Dead is the newest book from Peter Leonard. Leonard is the son of the celebrated Elmore Leonard. Peter is proving to be an excellent novel in his own right. The book tells the story of Harry Levin. A young man who escaped Dachau and made a life in Detroit. When his daughter is killed by a drunken driver with German diplomatic papers a chain of events leads him to return to Munich, his childhood home, and to track down the man responsible. Along the way he has to come to grips with his own past, and with the rise of the neo-Nazi movement. Harry is not a super hero or a super sleuth. He is just a man who is not willing that his daughter's killer go unpunished. When he realizes that the man is a former member of the SS and may be a serial killer of Jews, he determines to stop him. The book takes place in the early 1970s with flashbacks to Harry's escape from the Nazis. This is an enjoyable, well-written story of a man seeking justice and caught in a web that he can't escape.
    A Great Read
A young woman is killed when her car is rammed by a drunk driver in Washington, DC. Nothing can be done to the driver because he is under diplomatic immunity. The father, a holocaust survivor, goes to Germany to track down the man who killed his daughter. In Germany he recognizes the driver as the SS officer who had killed his parents. The former SS officer is now a highly successful businessman with political aspirations. He knows that the former concentration camp inmate is looking for him. The book is a thrilling cat and mouse game as the two men seek each other as they try to protect themselves.
A revenge story that doesn't live up to its promise
Good, fast read. Implausible plot that is never fully explained. Why would a successful, wealthy, supposedly respectable, former Nazi go round personally killing Holocaust survivors? The explanation when it comes seems dreamed up in order to have one, without any real threat or basis. Sole survivor recognizes him in public so why doesnât he kill her instead of a bunch of other people?
I missed the lack of emotional reaction â or any reaction â in the pared down writing. Writing style is simple, (influenced by Elmore Leonard who wrote the introduction?) and in âremoving the bits that people donât read,â it reminds me of a room with only the most basic furniture. For readers who prefer minimalism, this should be an excellent choice.

    Publisher's Summary:
Inspector Alvarez is in a good mood, for once. The sun is shining, he has enjoyed an uniterrupted morning nap at his desk, his irasciable boss - Superios Chief Salas - is on holiday, and the local Mallorquin governments proposal to increase tax on alcohol has been soundly defeated. But optimism, he soon has cause to reflect, is the road to disaster. In short order, he provokes the ire of Salas secretary and then of Salas himself - whose holiday does not seem to exclude phoning Alvarez to complain about his work. In no time at all, Alxvarez is mired down by a seemingly impossible task - identifying a man drowned in the bay, who it quickly trasnpires may not have been drowned at all.
    Members Reviews:
    Inspector Alvarez gets his way
Long-time followers of Inspector Alvarez will need little encouragement to lounge back and settle in for a wonderful evocation of life on Mallorca. The story this time evolves from the strange appearance of a body at sea, soon to be discovered to be the victim of poisoning. A connection is found with the natural death of a wealthy man, and the inspector is soon engaged in a delicate and very Mallorcan investigation of the household. As always, his superior boss, Salas, displays little confidence or respect for the inspector's methods, and Alvarez reciprocates the feelings for him. There is seldom if ever a mutual understanding or agreement on the findings of evidence or the methods used to obtain them. Alvarez seeks not only truth but justice for those touched by the tragedy of events, and his unorthodoxy on this occasion is both risky to his career and, potentially, to those he seeks to protect. While this drama plays out, we are treated to the inevitable but wonderful humour of the inspector's home life .... and once again I was reduced near to tears with laughter. If you listen to (or read) this book in company, be prepared for some funny looks or demands for explanation :). The inspector gets his way, and the reader rejoices with him.

    Members Reviews:
    So much fun!
I've read a few of Brian Knight's horror novels, and they are SCARY. This book is mostly a fun crime romp, and hurrah, the main character lives!
This novella is a great read on its own, but also serves as an introduction to Knight's novel:Sex, Death & Honey: From the Misadventures of Butch Quick. We are introduced to Butch Quick, all 7 feet, 300 pounds of him. Mr. Quick works for his Uncle Higheagle as a night club bouncer, automobile repo man, and bail bond recovery agent. In this story, he is serving as extra muscle for special guest act "Go-Go Gidget the Dancing Midget." It's supposed to be an easy gig, but if it was, I wouldn't be writing a five star review.
These are the "Misadventures" of Butch Quick for a reason. Nothing ever goes smoothly for the protagonist and his trials are many with no lack of comedy and action. This is truly fun read, and I would highly recommendSex, Death & Honey (The Misadventures of Butch Quick)for a more in-depth look at Butch and another "mis"adventure.
This review wouldn't be complete without mentioning Butch Quick's ethnicity versus Brian Knight's. Butch is Nez Perce, and from his author photo, it's pretty obvious that Mr.Knight is not. Having gone to college with a popular Native American author (no name dropping in someone else's book review), I saw how disdainful he was towards Native American characters written by non-natives. In this case, unlike in, for example, a Tony Hillerman novel, Quick's race really doesn't come into play except as another factor in his poor luck. Being Nez Perce in Paradise Valley, the book's fictional setting, means the local police are more likely to assume he is the perpetrator rather than the victim of a crime. I trust that if there is more depthy look into the Nez Perce nation in the future, Mr.Knight will do the necessary research to portray their culture accurately. So far, it's just not something worth worrying about.
Knight's action sequences are fun and well-paced, but my favorite thing about his writing is his ability to really put you in the setting of his books. His descriptions are vivid, and his dialogue suits the atmosphere and the characters. It's a first person narrative, and Butch's voice is loud and clear. Even though I knew things weren't going to go his way I couldn't help crossing my fingers for this engaging character.
Big Trouble in Little Boots by Brian Knight
Butch Quick is a big man in a small minded town. His size intimidates but his perchance for getting himself into tight spots make him entirely human.
Butch works security in Paradise Valley's best nightclub. In his space time he works as a sort of do anything go-fer for his uncle. Anything Uncle Higheagle needs is taken care of by Butch from repossession to bail bond recovery agent. Oh did I mention Uncle Higheagle also owns the nightclub.
Things are not looking good for Go-Go Gidget the Dancing Midget and she needs extra security to protect her from a stalker.

Press Corpse brings back the dynamic twosome of Jerry Knight, the Night Talker - the brash and opinionated right-wing host of Americas most popular all-night radio talk show - and Jane Day, a thoroughly liberated and just as opinionated leftist reporter for the Washington Post. Their philosophies are light-years from one another. From food to religion, politics to whos going to win the Superbowl, these two cant seem to agree on anything. Anything but murder, that is.
When a well-known journalist is killed at an event where the president is speaking, Knight and Day cant help getting involved. It soon becomes apparent that the bad guys may have hit the wrong target. And the president might be next....
    Members Reviews:
    A FUN BOOK
I really enjoyed this book. The right-wing obnoxious self-
congratulatory Knight was so obviously patterned after Rush
limbaugh that that alone is worth the time to read it.
I liked the way the two of them argued while still finding the
occasional good thing in each other. I enjoyed the Washington DC
setting. In fact, when I read mysteries it is always the setting
and the characters that are important to me. The plot is secondary
and who actually "done it" is something I rarely remember.
I am looking foward to reading the others. I know that there are
at least two. I hope there will be even more on the way.
Cover tributes are wrong; amateurish attempt with bad climax
This novel has nuggets of interest, but the story and action feel contrived at every turn. It has the aura of someone trying to write a good mystery story rather than the aura of a good story. Like a movie in which the director's gimmicks are visible, the authors' mechanics are visible on page after page.
The tributes "quoted" on the cover are misleading. This is not an enjoyable read, and the ending was like a last straw insult to the dogged reader who persevered and read the whole book. Ouch.
    Great, Easy Read
This book is a quick, easy adventure. The story flows nicely and the characters are easy to like. The murder unfolds and you are into it in no time. Would be good while flying or driving. I also enjoyed the sequel.
    Ugh...
This book was terrible. Flat, cliched, two-dimensional characters, unrealistic dialogue and spotty character development abound. Take a pass.

When an ex-cop is found dead in a bath of ice, the Dublin police believe it to be a revenge killing. Shortly afterwards, a journalist is found drowned in his own septic tank. Who is the killer's next victim? And what's his endgame?
    Members Reviews:
    REILLY STEEL!
    Loved it!
Torn had a brilliant story line, it was dramatic ,full of suspense and also very comical. Caroline Lennon was fantastic!
Awful. Just no. Couldn't finish this.
If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
Some may really enjoy this book but I found the characters to be two dimensional, weak and very cliched. I thought the Irish were badly portrayed and as though lifted directly from a book of stereotypes, as was the American protagonist Reilly Steel. I could not even finish this book or indeed get half way. When the larger than life profiler from the UK arrived to help out and commented on the dead body's fashion choices I considered it far too removed from reality to hold my interest any longer. I feel like the narrative and background requires further research, the characters' two dimensional and overly cliched quality detract and distract from the story and the writing style itself needs to mature and develop significantly. I wouldn't chance buying another by this writing duo Keven and Melissa Hill (aka Casey Hill). Bridge burned.
What three words best describe Caroline Lennons performance?
Caroline Lennon is an excellent narrator but I think the material she was given to work with on this occasion does not do her justice.
You didnt love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    Nope.
    Any additional comments?
Not a fan. Most of my feelings on the book are expressed above. I gave up mid way through chapter 19, three bodies in and almost half way.

In this third installment of the Knight & Day mystery series, Jerry Knight, an opinionated right-wing talk show host, and his partner Jane Day, a liberal reporter for the Washington Post, are caught in the crossfire between power-conscious Washington and media-mad Hollywood. The results are murder.
When an aging movie star known for her beauty as well as her political activism is brutally stabbed at the Kennedy Center Honor Awards, the motives and suspects are bicoastal. It doesnt take long for Knight and Day to get sucked into the middle of a case in which they could wind up as the next victims.

    Members Reviews:
maybe not as strange as real life . . .
I love to watch the Kennedy Center Honors program on TV as the honorees are generally those stars I remember from my growing up years. Seeing their lives in the documentary and then a live presentation of some sort, followed by the accolades to the honoree never fails to bring on the tears and the goosebumps.
Obviously I was a built-in audience for this book by two Washington insiders. What a treat! It was almost as good as watching the show itself.
Conservative radio talk show host Jerry Knight is a slightly nicer version of Rush YKW, while liberal columnist Jane Day is a maybe Maureen? But as the saying goes-opposites attract, and so it does. One or the more enjoyable aspects of the book for me was the constant wondering by each of them as to what they saw in each other. Ah, well. Mysteries abound everywhere.
This time, it's an aging actress, known for her support of liberal causes that ends up dead at the ceremony. Carla Caldwell has stepped on lots of toes as she climbed the ladder to success, so who decided she wouldn't reach her next birthday?
Detective A. L. Jones is up to his ears in problems: the budget for the Washington PD has been cut to smithereens, leaving him with not as much help as he'd like, not to mention a car that breaks down too often. Add in a young man he's trying to save from himself-and the ghetto-and you have the recipe for one frustrated cop. He deals with it all as best he can, but the very last thing he needs is more of Knight and Day. But that's just what he gets.
And as if that wasn't enough, an article that Jane wrote has been optioned for a film, and the producer is badgering her for a commitment to come to Hollywood and help write the screenplay for more money than Jane can even imagine. But-that means she'd have to leave Washington.
This is really good-and contemporary-stuff. I loved it! And as usual, now I'm off to play catch-up and find the earlier books in the series. I've read lots worse. For a brief glimpse into the inner workings of the folks who inhabit our nation's capital, this is an enjoyable way to spend a few hours.
An exciting page-turner that keeps you wanting more.
Death With Honors is the best installation of the Knight and Day series yet. The characters are superb; you can really feel the bond that Jerry and Jane have for each other. The inclusion of A.L.
