The movie begins with a young girl listening to the weather forecast on a portable radio.

During the last of the credits, we see their mother reading to Satsuki and Mei from the book which inspired Mei to name Totoro.

The sisters walk back toward their house with Nanny and Kanta, and the credits begin.

Their mother catches a glimpse of the girls in the tree outside her hospital room, and the cat bus delivers the girls back home to meet Nanny.

At the hospital, the girls' parents discuss how well they have dealt with the mother's illness.
