STRONG WOMEN rose to the occasion when Israel fell under the oppressive hand of Jabin, the Canaanite king of Hazor.

This week, we discuss the victory of Deborah and Barak, which was sealed by the decisive act of Jael, wife of Heber the Kenite. We discuss Barak’s reluctance to lead Israel’s troops against the iron chariots of Sisera, Jabin’s general, explain why Sisera was probably the leader of a mercenary band from Sardinia, and how archaeologists have confirmed the Bible’s account of Hazor’s destruction under Joshua, shortly after 1406 BC, and again in the time of the Judges around 1234 BC.

Here’s the link to the paper by Dr. Douglas Petrovich, “The Dating of Hazor’s Destruction in Joshua 11 (https://www.etsjets.org/files/JETS-PDFs/51/51-3/JETS%2051-3%20489-512%20Petrovich.pdf),” which corroborates the biblical account (link opens PDF document).

We also discuss the brief accounts of the judges Othniel (nephew of Joshua’s colleague Caleb), Shamgar (who may have been a Hurrian mercenary), and Ehud, the left-handed warrior who freed Israel from the oppression of Eglon, king of Moab.

IT DIDN’T take long for Israel to forget God. Within thirty years of arriving in Canaan, God was compelled to tell the Israelites that because of their disobedience, He would not drive out the people before them.

This is a pattern that repeats throughout the Book of Judges. We discuss the failure of Israel to obey God’s command to push the Canaanites, Amorites, and Perizzites (Philistines) out of the land, the apparent contradiction over the destruction of Jerusalem by the tribe of Judah and the fact that the Jebusites still controlled it nearly 400 years later in the time of David, and why Jerusalem was important despite being smaller than other cities of the region at the time.

THE PEOPLE of Israel are finally dispatched to their homes after the allocation of the land and establishing the cities of refuge, sanctuaries for those who inadvertently commit what we today would call manslaughter.

Before they go, however, Joshua binds them with another oath, demanding that they choose who they will serve, “whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the [Euphrates] River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Of course, as we’ll see next week when we start the Book of Judges, it didn’t take long for the people to forget their promise.

THE DIVISION of the land continues in this week’s study as we read through the boundaries of the lands allotted to the seven tribes who had not yet claimed their inheritance.

We note the influence of the pagan Amorites on the people of Canaan, with cities devoted to pagan gods like Dagon, Shemesh (sun-god), Horon (an underworld deity), and Anat (war-goddess). This is significant. The pagan Canaanites were not completely driven out of the land, which created spiritual problems for Israel for centuries to come.

THE SECOND HALF of the Book of Joshua begins with a list of kings defeated by Moses and Joshua. Interestingly, our Bibles list 31 kings while the Septuagint, translated into Greek by Jewish religious scholars about 200 years before the birth of Jesus, only names 29.

Then we begin describing the allotment of the land to the tribes of Israel, a process that will take us through the month of February. This week, we list the the territories given to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh east of the Jordan, and the land in Canaan allotted to the tribe of Judah, which included the region of Hebron, a stronghold of the Anakim, requested by Caleb.

This week, we discuss Joshua’s two campaigns in Canaan, against coalitions of Amorites, Perizzites (Philistines), Hittites, Hivites (Mycenaean Greeks), and Jebusites (probably Hurrians). We explain how the deception of the Gibeonites was perceived by the Amorite kings in the south as a divide-and-conquer maneuver by Israel, and why the Anakim were a warrior elite who venerated the Rephaim (spirits of the Nephilim; i.e., demons).

Here is an excerpt from our book Veneration (https://allpropastors.org/the-nephilim-and-the-sons-of-god/) at All-Pro Pastors explaining our views on the Nephilim, Rephaim, and Anakim, and why we believe Anakim ”was a title roughly meaning ‘lords’ or ‘rulers,’ and the ‘sons of Anak’ [Num. 13:21] were a warrior elite who ruled the hill country of Judah and Israel.”

Here is the Chuck Missler article we mentioned (https://www.khouse.org/articles/2013/1099/) where he proposed that Joshua’s Long Day was the result of a near pass of Earth by the planet Mars. Besides the defeat of the Amorite kings, Chuck suggested that other significant events, like the flattening of Sodom and Gomorrah and the destruction of the Assyrian army outside the walls of Jerusalem, were also the result of a Mars flyby. Fascinating reading!

Chuck pointed out that Jonathan Swift, in his novel Gulliver’s Travels, apparently knew about the two moons of Mars (including their sizes, periods, and orbits) 151 years before they were discovered! According to Chuck, “it is assumed that Swift simply embroidered his colorful parody drawing upon an ancient legend of some sort, probably not realizing that it was, apparently, an actual eye-witness account long prior to the development of telescopic optics.”

THE DESTRUCTION of Jericho was not just a military victory. It was another statement of God’s superiority over the gods of the Amorites, whose land was about to be given to the Israelites.

This week, we discuss the conquest of Jericho and Ai. We explain why God’s command to march around the city may have been a reversal of an ancient ritual known in Mesopotamia a thousand years before the Exodus. Sharon compares this to a pagan myth from ancient Persia, and then we explain the significance of the location of the altar on Mount Ebal, overlooking the city of Shechem.

For more on the archaeology of ancient Jericho, see this article at the Christian Publishing House Blog (https://christianpublishinghouse.co/2017/06/02/the-walls-of-jericho/), and this one at The Archaeologist (https://www.thearchaeologist.org/blog/ancient-jericho-the-first-walled-city-in-history).

We also note the reference to “native born” Israelites in Josh. 8:33. Who were they, assuming that all of the Israelites who entered Canaan (except Joshua and Caleb) had been born during the wilderness wanderings?

Aaron Lipkin recently shared new research with us on The Bible’s Greatest Mysteries showing that the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh were already in Canaan when the rest of Israel arrived. These, then, were the native born Israelites who joined their cousins from Egypt. You can watch that program here:

THE CROSSING of the Jordan River by the Israelites was more than preparation for the conquest of Canaan. It represented God breaching the veil between the spirit realm and the land of the living.

We discuss the mission of the two spies sent by Joshua and more examples of the “third day” in the Bible. It was on the third day after the spies visited the inn run by Rahab that the Israelites crossed the Jordan, and it was the third day after the circumcision of the men of Israel that the assault on Jericho began (which we’ll discuss next week).

We also explain why the Jordan River crossing was significant: We found during our research for our book Veneration that the Jordan was believed to be a boundary between the realm of the living and the land of the dead. Hence, the mountains of Moab east of the Dead Sea were called the “mountains of Abarim” (Num. 33:47), which, according to the 1899 Encyclopaedia Biblica, means mountains of “Those-on-the-other-side.”

Other definitions are similar: “regions beyond,” “going across a space or a dividing line,” or “crossing over.” But until recently, when scholars recognized the existence of a cult of the dead among the ancient Canaanites, these definitions were assumed to refer to geography—the other side of the Jordan River.

In fact, scholars now recognize that the equivalent term was used by the neighbors of the ancient Israelites to refer to spirits that “cross over” from the spirit realm into the land of the living. This was used to describe the spirits of the Rephaim, who were summoned to a ritual feast in their honor to the threshing-floor, sanctuary, or tabernacle of El—the summit of Mount Hermon—where “the blessing of the name of El” would revivify (resurrect) “the heroes” after their arrival at dawn of the third day.

Interestingly, abarim, translated into English as “travelers,” appears in Ezekiel 39:11 as a reference to the soldiers of Gog of Magog, and was used by Ezekiel to describe the valley “east of the [Dead] sea”—in other words, the very place from which the Israelites crossed the Jordan to begin the conquest of Canaan.

PSALM 91 is often called the Soldiers’ Psalm, but the warfare it describes is spiritual rather than physical.

The “terror,” “pestilence,” and “destruction” referenced in Psalm 91 were evil entities named Pachad, Deber, and Qeteb who were well-known to the ancient Canaanites. We also note that the “adder” of verse 13 is nachash, the “serpent” of Genesis 3, and “the serpent” of Psalm 91 is a tannin—a dragon!

We also note God’s promise to deliver those who hold fast to Him in love, and we explain why verse 16 is a promise of the coming Messiah.

Then we move to the first chapter of Joshua, an exhortation of the Israelites to “be strong and courageous” as they prepared for the conquest of Canaan. Notice Joshua 1:3, God’s promise that “every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you.” And we discuss the importance of verse 11, and why Joshua’s command to his officers to prepare the people “for within three days you are to pass over this Jordan” is a reversal of a pagan ritual intended to resurrect “those who cross over”—the Rephaim—at dawn of the third day.

MOSES’ FINAL blessing on Israel was in the form of prophecies over the tribes, along with a reminder that when God led the people from Sinai, He was accompanied by “ten thousands of holy ones.”

“Holy ones” is a term used elsewhere in the Old Testament, always in reference to angelic beings. Yahweh’s “march from the south” is a theme also noted in Habakkuk 3:3–7 and Judges 5:4–5. The references to Edom in those passages hint that Mount Sinai is located farther north than most people think.

We also discuss the prophecy over the tribe of Dan (“a lion’s cub that leaps from Bashan”), the absence of Simeon from the tribes blessed by Moses, and the odd reference in Jude to the dispute between Michael and Satan over the body of Moses.
