Girl Crush Podcast

Buckle up for possibly our favorite episode of the season reviewing A Christmas Carol (... :The Movie) and Buttons (.... :A Christmas Tale). One is a classic holiday story, with a ~twist~ including mice, distractingly poor animation, and a UK chart-topping single by Kate Winslet herself!  The other is like watching a community theater production - what year is it? why are the background characters mouthing the words of lines that are not theirs? it's a musical?! Kate only has one line and then ISN'T IN THE MOVIE?!  In other words - it's wholesome but not good and we cried laughing while recording the episode and you absolutely don't want to miss it!

Little Children (2006), starring Kate Winslet, Patrick Wilson, Jennifer Connelly, and Noah Emmerich, is a drama/romance/thriller (?) following an unhappy pair of suburbanites engaging in an affair while the community reacts to a recently released felon.  While we felt this melancholy plot plodded along and went down too many side avenues to be a big hit - you should still tune in to hear our full review and how Little Children ranks out of all 46 Kate movies!

Mary and the Witch's Flower, released in 2017, surprised us with its cute animation and fun plot! Kate voices one of the antagonists in this anime film directed by Oscar nominee Hiromasa Yonebayashi. With an 89% on Rotton Tomatoes, we weren't alone in liking this movie but tune in to hear where this movie ranks out of all 46 Kate Winslet movies.

Two upper middle-class couples try too hard to do the polite, politically correct thing by working through a disagreement between their sons in Carnage, ultimately devolving and revealing their true feelings about themselves, their partners, and their kids - with no productive outcome.

Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz, Jodie Foster, and John C Reilly star in this play-like film which we had very different opinions on! Tune in to see where we compromised on scoring and how Carnage ultimately ranks for Kate Winslet's 46 films

Kate Winslet's oscar-winning performance in The Reader was both disturbing and thought provoking.  Such complicated feelings present as The Reader ultimately makes you question - at what point does someone not go along with the status quo? Do you speak up to help someone, even when they are guilty of terrible things? Did they age Kate Winslet's feet, or was it a foot double...?

Listen in to hear the breakdown of this award winning movie, all of our complicated feelings on it, and how Kate's chilling character influenced the overall ranking of The Reader out of her 46 movies.

Enigma takes us back to Bletchley Park's world famous code breakers during WWII - and a mystery, a mole, and a race against time.  Kate Winslet's character is one we have come to know and love from Kate - smart, witty, bold, and a bit reckless at times - wrapped up in an unassuming package.

While this movie came out 13 years before the wildly popular Imitation Game, Enigma seems to be far less known. Tune in to hear our thoughts on why that might be, and how it stacks up against all 46 Kate Winslet movies.

This week we're reviewing THREE children's movies starring Kate Winslet! The first is Pride, a BBC TV movie released in 2004. This movie boasts a large cast with Helen Mirren, Rupert Graves, Martin Freeman, and Robbie Coltrane starring alongside Kate! While this just seems like a lackluster attempt at recreating The Lion King, we did love seeing real nature shots and hearing about how they made this live-action movie.

The second movie is The Fox and the Child featuring those two titular characters and no one else in a feel-good kids movie that Anne describes as "like a hug."

Last AND (spoiler alert) least of the day is the 2019 animated film Swift that just made us wonder why Willem Dafoe and Kate Winslet agreed to be in it.

Tune in for this 3-for-1 episode to find out how these movies rank vs. all 46 Kate Winslet movies!

However, this movie proves a stellar cast can only take a script so far... Tune in to find out why this movie fell a little short for us and how it ranks vs. every other Kate Winslet movie!

Added bonus: you know we couldn't review a Will Smith movie without talking about The Slap ® and Jada Pinkett Smith.

We've watched a lot of strange movies at Girl Crush Podcast, but this one miiiight take the cake! Kate Winslet did a total 180 following Titanic with two eccentric, soul-searching films - and Holy Smoke is certainly one of them.

Join us as we review this movie, including our disappointment that it wasn't more cult-y  (?!),  our top songs we played in the car as teenagers, some of the worst use of slo-mo we've seen yet at GCP, and much much more!

Today we explore another period piece, set in the 1800s on the English seaside in the 2020 drama, Ammonite.  How neither Kate Winslet nor Saoirse Ronan received any major award buzz for their performances is beyond us!

Join us as we discuss the plot, the amazing use of light and color in this movie, a self-assessment on whether we would recognize a fossil if we dug one up on accident, and of course - all things Kate Winslet!
