When I am searching for words that encompass how I’m feeling, I often look to two sources…one of them being Atticus Poetry.

In this week's episode, Aleta and I discuss the poignant and piercing memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, written by J.D. Vance.

In his novel, J.D. draws so many parallels in communities across America, compared to his own upbringing in a small Ohio town and the hills of Eastern Kentucky. He discusses his tumultuous childhood, his one constant throughout his upbringing (his spitfire grandmother who he always referred to as "Mammaw"), and how he ultimately made his way through the instabilities and trauma of his young life and achieved success as an adult.

The novel highlights themes of rural American life: the strong bond of family, intergenerational poverty, and the changing structure of community, family, and stability. His novel gives us a glimpse into what many of those around us are struggling with currently.

We talk about similarities to our small town life and the things that JD experienced/witnessed from his upbringing. As well as going off on a tangent...or two.

This week KW and I hash out the recent release of Unsolved Mysteries: Tsunami Spirits, which is featured on Netflix. This episode was in Netflix’s second drop of unsolved cases, which were released on October 19, 2020.

We discuss the earthquake that hit the Tohoku region of Japan on March 11, 2011, and the deadly tsunami that followed soon after. This tsunami killed thousands of people and displaced so many in that region. However, it is the phenomenon that took place after that is the subject of our final installment of Spooky Season 2020.

Friends, it's officially the week of Halloween and we are continuing the Spooktacular season with today's episode covering the original 1976 version of The Omen. The Omen features iconic actor Gregory Peck and as we discuss in the episode, it's a part of an introduction into a new genre of horror-evil children!
