When one goes to a theater to see a play, they are given a program that includes the list of characters and a brief description of their role in the story. I feel the need to introduce the main characters in this year of our story, at least. The story I’m about to tell spans 45 years, and the list of characters alone would fill a book. By the way, Tolstoy’s War and Peace holds the record for the most named characters in a book…600! For fiction writers, the recommended number of main characters is from 3 to 5, max. But in non-fiction, of course, the author doesn’t have the option of simply inventing characters for the sake of promoting a story line. Writers of non-fiction have to work with the characters they encounter in the narrative, and the crafting of the non-fictional story works contrary to that required in laying out a fictional work. In fiction, the writer’s work is to determine the maximum number of characters to be invented and their role in the storyline; the task of the non-fiction author is to prune the list of characters encountered along the way and reduce to a minimum the number of those who are essential to moving the story forward. This episode sets the stage for our story and for 1971, in particular. 

Depois de anos de preparação, chegou o momento. O tiro da partida foi dado. Mas a corrida não foi de 100m ou 400 metros de estafetas; foi uma maratona de 45 anos, que incluía barreiras- Mal demos a partida quando apareceu uma.

This was the culmination of years of preparation. The starting gun had been fired and the race was on.  But it wasn't a 100m dash or 400m relay race. It was the start of a 45-year long marathon that was specially adapted. This marathon included hurdles, one of them right out of the starting block.

Recently one of our daughters-in-law mentioned her niece and husband are preparing to go on the foreign mission field and asked, “Would we be willing or able give them any advice?” This podcast tells the story of over 40 years on the mission field, but in our narration we haven’t even got there yet.  

 The bigger the mountain, the more preparation that’s needed. But there is one quality that’s essential and that fits all situations and all challenges, the large and the small, the long-range project or the challenge of the moment. You may be fighting a personal battle, a family problem, a financial disaster, or a health condition. The word for that quality is “Hineni”. It’s a simple concept,  but for mortals like us, it’s not that easy.

Quanto maior for a montanha, mais preparação é necessária.  Mas há uma qualidade que é essencial e adequada a todas as situações e todos os desafios, os grandes e os pequenos, projetos de longo alcance ou os desafios do momento.   Você precisa dela se está a travar uma batalha pessoal, um problema familiar, um desastre financeiro ou um problema de saúde. A palavra que descreve esta qualidade é "Hineni".  É um conceito simples, mas para seres mortais como nós, não é assim tão fácil.

Simply put, history is a narrative of the passing of generations. We are most acquainted with this in our family setting and the tombstones in a cemetery are the most visible reminder of that passing. But this phenomenon also occurs in business, professional and political contexts. The fact we tell about one of these occasions means we are reflecting on the significance that the past generation had or has or will have on the next generation. And when I recognize that I represent a generation that will pass, and I face the reality that someday I could be the end of a generation, it's impossible not to reflect on what was, what is, and what will be the significance of my part in this piece of history.

Dito de uma maneira mais simples, a história é a narrativa da passagem de gerações. Obviamente, esta passagem nos toca mais diretamente no seio das relações familiares e está mais visível nas pedras que marcam sepulturas nos cemitérios. Mas esta passagem também acontece no âmbito comercial, profissional, e político. Contar a história desta passagem é uma forma de meditar sobre o impacto que a geração que passou tem ou teve na geração seguinte. E quando eu reconheço que represento uma geração que há de passar, e apercebo-me da realidade de que eu um dia posso marcar a passagem de uma geração,  é impossível não parar e meditar o que foi,  o que é, ou o que será o significado da minha parte neste pedaço de história.
