  • 105: Giving Back Insights #16 — Progress with Rob Lowe

Welcome to the 16th episode of Giving Back Insights, my Thursday solo show where I talk about how our guests and their charities serve others, to explore actions each of can take to make a difference in people’s lives and to share. Today I’m talking about progress. Listen to today’s episode and don’t forget to give your feedback and valuable comment. Enjoy!

    Key Takeaways:

This episode is enlightened by Josh Coombes. In the cover you see a man looking in the mirror.

Look at Josh. You will see kindness, love, and big heart on the eyes of Josh.

Tony Robbins’ interview on EOFire episode 1272 with John Lee Dumas.

This episode impacts my life so much. I listened to it again, again and again.

This Is the start of an incredible minute that I transcribed myself, it was so powerful

If you ask me ‘What does it take to be happy?’, it’s one word: progress. Progress equals happiness. If you’re not even where you want to be but you’re making progress in your business, you’re making progress in your body, you’re making progress in your relationship, you’re going to feel alive.

“And when you achieve a goal, you know, goals only feel good for how long. I don’t give a **** what the goal is. The biggest goal of your life, you achieve it and after a while, ‘is this all there is?’ Because we’re not designed just to get a goal, it’s who we become that makes us really happy or really sad. So we’ve gotta grow, that’s what makes us feel alive, and when we grow we feel we have something to give. And giving is what makes people feel like they have a meaningful life.

“You know, nobody wants to be a taker. You may think so on the surface but anybody who takes, it’s a pretty empty feeling. When we feel like our life has meaning beyond ourselves, when we feel like we’re here giving more than we’re taking, that’s when someone starts to prosper not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually.“I think the game of life comes down to understanding it’s not about me, it’s about we. The secret to living is giving, as corny as that sounds. But it’s real.”

The game of life is understanding is not about me but about we. The secret of happiness is to give more than you take. The only thing lasts in our life is our own growth by any means.

Josh was a guest of Episode 24 on Giving Back Podcast.

When I talked to Josh he went to Greece to help some refugees.  He's been all over the world sharing. According to Josh, we can give three things: time, talent, and treasure.

Treasure is not only money, it’s all your resources including your time.  One of the most important lessons Josh carries with him is that being fully present and spending time with someone who's been invisible can be the most important thing you give.

Josh is ready to take #DoSomethingForNothing to the next level and he's now partnered with Leesa.com, a mattress company that embodies the values of giving back. See below links section for some of their wonderful projects.

I connected Josh with another guest, Carlos Miranda. Another big-hearted man. they'll have a great time and let's see if they come up with more magic.

I'm working with Heidi Stieglitz Ham whose project revolves around autism.  Meaningful work that expresses their passion and creates lasting financial stability.

My friend working through child’s mental illness and is such an incredible advocate both as a mother and for all children with a similar problem.  Her eyes lit up when she's paying it forward to help other parents.  I look at her and see what Brendan Burchard means in his book, "The Millionaire Messenger" --- her message is so strong and clear and she's got a great voice to deliver that message.

I am so fortunate to pass a fabulous week with some amazing people.

  • 104: Strategically Scaling Businesses with Purpose — Carlos Miranda with I.G. Advisors

Carlos Miranda swears he’s not a serial entrepreneur despite founding three companies. Carlos’s companies, I.G. Advisors, Social Misfits Media, and Lightful, came from a necessity to serve a deeply underserved industry. Carlos has worked with several big-name companies like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Nike, and more, and has help them scale their impact and growth in very strategic ways.

    Key Takeaways:

[4:50] Carlos started his first business 5.5 years ago.

[7:05] How did Carlos get started as a fund raiser?

[13:00] Why did Carlos move to the UK to pursue this line of work?

[19:15] Carlos went to the UK for love! Now, he has twins.

[20:45] How does I.G. Advisors work?

[28:20] In order to be effective, company values need to be in line with the charities they serve.

[29:55] If the C-suite team is not involved in the planning stages, then it’s never going to work.

[31:40] There needs to be a balance between passionate employees driving the initiative vs. C-suite teams who understand the importance of the initiative.  If the C-suite doesn’t understand it, then it’s the first to go when the company hits a bad quarter.

[33:00] What is Social Misfits Media?

[39:10] What are some of the differences between social media, social good, and social media for business?

[42:50] Where does Carlos’s 3rd company, Lightful, come into play in all of this?

[48:20] What kind of tools does Carlos use?

[52:50] What is Carlos’s personal philosophy on giving back?

[56:15] Social media is a great equalizer. One person can make a huge impact on social media.

[57:50] By the way, Carlos has no work/life balance.

  • 103: Giving Back Insights #15 — Leading with your heart with Rob Lowe

Welcome to the 15th episode of Giving Back Insights, my Thursday solo show where I talk about how our guests and their charities serve others, to explore actions each of can take to make a difference in people’s lives and to share. Today I’m talking about leading with your heart. Listen to today’s episode and don’t forget to give your feedback and valuable comment. Enjoy!

    Key Takeaways:

I know I am at my strongest when I lead with my heart. Being vulnerable is hard for me and definitely an area of growth.

It’s amazing what you can learn about yourself when you’re with a bunch of people learning about each one of them.

The name of this retreat…...do you think it was soft? How about this for an opening exercise: get with a partner, and answer this question: “What don’t I want people to know about me.” Yeah, we went deep. This is HARD work, my friends.

Asking deep, hard questions, listening intently to other people’s experiences, doing energy work.

Mask exercise, three questions: What is your biggest fear? What is it you feel you hide from others? When is it you feel shame? I worked with James and he’s so together that I would NEVER have thought he’d be bothered by the things he talked about. ---EVERYONE has baggage!

Took the lessons from the retreat to my first presentation when I returned. I led with my heart and connected beyond any previous experience.

Thanks again to Candy & James, Joseph, and my sister from another mother Debbie, aka Samantha, and all the other members of the Soul Leaders Mastermind in San Diego!

[11:35] What is Mason’s favorite story about someone giving back/receiving a free slice of pizza?

[20:15] Why did Mason leave his job in Wall Street after three years?

[24:15] What has been the coolest media interview Mason has been on?

[27:55] How many post-it notes does Mason have from both customers and the homeless on his shop’s walls?

  • 100: Heartsong Church & The Memphis Islamic Center Welcomes You — Steve Stone & Bashar Shala

When Steve Stone, a pastor from Heartsong Church in Memphis, first heard that there was going to be a Memphis Islamic Center built right across the street from him, he felt ‘queasy’. He admits this initial feeling came from fear and ignorance. But instead of going with this instant reaction, he decided to reach out to Bashar Shala, the chairman of the board of trustees for the center, and his community. By welcoming a new neighbor, a deep friendship between the two communities was born.

    Key Takeaways:

[4:15] This is a story about new neighbors moving into a neighborhood.

[7:35] Bashar was looking at several properties and locations to set up his community’s mosque.

[10:15] Why did Steve feel ‘queasy’ when he found out a mosque was going to be built across the street from his church?

[14:45] Bashar was worried about how the mosque was going to be received by the local community.

[20:30] Steve and his church reached out to Bashar and his community because they were their neighbors, and they’re suppose to love their neighbors.

[23:55] What did Bashar’s congregation think about Heartsong’s kindness?

[30:45] The best part of this is that both Steve’s and Bashar’s congregation got bigger and bigger.

[31:30] At the end of the day, it’s about developing friendships.

[34:30] A man named ‘Mark’ really struggled with letting Bashar and his congregation into his heart.

[39:45] Steve admits that he’s been on interviews that have been absolutely hateful.

[45:05] Steve and Bashar do not focus on politics or religion. Instead, they focus on their common human humanity; they focus on love and compassion.

[51:05] Bashar believes stories like theirs change bad stereotypes.

[55:05] Bashar and Steve talk about The Friendship Foundation Park.

[1:02:55] The world is fortunate to have leaders like Steve and Bashar who are willing to go through uncomfortable situations in the name of peace and love.

Today I’m talking about how to think and talk about what you are doing, and take action. Listen to today’s episode and don’t forget to give your feedback and valuable comment. Enjoy!

    Key Takeaways:

When people ask me how our guests make such a huge difference in people’s lives, I tell them how they all got started.Three things:Have your vision, and know the opportunity of right now.---Your vision can be helping a person you know, and the opportunity can be as simple as connecting people.Think and talk about what you are doing, and take action---It’s what you’re DOING, not what you’re planning on doing.  The present has great power, so think about whatever you’re going to do, talk about how you’re going to do it, and DO it.Share your journey making a difference for people and invite others to the party---not everyone’s a leader or organizer.  Not everyone wants to take charge.  But when it’s from the heart, people who share your passion are going to participate.  Invite, don’t ask!Four awesome stories about people doing amazing things to help others, starting one person at a time:From Crazy Good Turns, Riley Gantt and Rainbow PackRiley Gantt was 10 years old and really upset that a young student that she visited didn’t have crayons.  Her vision was to simply give that student crayons, and it’s grown to giving away 10,000 backpacks full of pens and paper and crayons and erasers to kids who might not otherwise have these basics. From Crazy Good Turns, Alex Gramling and Christmas Tree SantasAlex wanted to clear out some clutter.  Little did he know that a single Christmas tree would grow to 4,700 given away in 2016.From Kind World, Dylan Siegel and the book Chocolate BarDylan’s best friend Noah has a rare liver disease and Dylan decided to do something to help his friend.  He wrote a book when he was 6, raised over a million dollars, and has changed the course of the disease. • 098: Healing Through Social Connection — Tom Harrison House with Jacquie Johnston-Lynch

Jacquie Johnston-Lynch is the Founder of The Brink, a non-alcoholic bar and support group as well as the Co-founder of Tom Harrison House, an addiction treatment center for the military; the first, and only, of its kind in the UK. Jacquie discusses why her treatment center does it a bit differently than the rest and how she’s found that healing comes most effectively through the connection and socialization with others.

    Key Takeaways:

[2:30] What does the tagline, Honor, Hope, and Healing mean to Jacquie?

[4:40] The people of Liverpool love to drink, but this comes at a cost.

[6:10] The Brink is a non-alcoholic bar where everybody knows your name!

[7:40] The point of having a drink is to have a chat. The drink itself doesn’t have to be alcoholic.

[8:55] The police do not help with rehabilitation. They only catch and punish. Drinking is a public health issue, not a criminal issue.

[12:05] How does this non-alcoholic bar work?

[20:55] Jacquie no longer runs The Brink. She gave it to the community for them to take care of!

[23:45] Doing things in a community, in connection, is where effective change gets made.

[27:20] How did the Tom Harrison House get started?

[31:30] It’s sad that what Jacquie is doing is the first of its kind.

[31:55] Why did Jacquie focus solely on the military?

[38:40] How is the Tom Harrison House different from the civilian treatment centers?

[45:20] In the years that the center has been open, only 3 women have joined. Jacquie would like to look more into why women aren’t seeking treatment.

[50:05] How is the Tom Harrison House funded?

[58:35] Clearmind International, based out of Vancouver, has been a huge support system for Jacquie.

  • 097: Giving Back Insights #12 — Giving and receiving with Rob Lowe

Welcome to the 12th episode of Giving Back Insights, my Thursday solo show where I talk about how our guests and their charities serve others, to explore actions each of can take to make a difference in people’s lives and to share. Today I’m talking about Giving and receiving. Listen to today’s episode and don’t forget to give your feedback and valuable comment. Enjoy!

    Key Takeaways:

I was talking to a friend recently about the fact when we give without expecting thanks or acknowledgment, we receive so much more than we give. She’s someone who has made a huge difference in people’s lives and loves doing it.  Being around people who have different perspectives opens up and expands our world, makes us more aware of what we have and how to apply our gifts.  I remember when guest Tony Delmercado from Hawke Media talked about how volunteering helped him be a better father, husband, and business leader.

Spend time with people who share your values, and generally, you get to liking each other.  When you get to know new people, some of them will need what you offer, or know people who do.

The key here is that you only receive when your giving is from a genuine place in your heart.  Loving, kindness, joy in helping; these feelings are at the core of giving without thought of acknowledgment or thanks.

Most of the time you won’t know what’s coming, or when, but you can be sure it’s something you’ll really benefit from if you accept the gift with the spirit of an open heart. Sometimes the gift isn’t always obvious and it’s easy to overlook.

Giving is supposed to be joyful and sharing what you have with others is a way to appreciate the abundance in our life.

A good friend of mine is a pastor at Shiloh and I had gone to a couple of Sunday services to check out his church.

I told him that I believe that everything will fall in line when I develop a deeper gratitude for the abundance in my life, and a prayer to help me in this area of my life would be great.

I am a very spiritual man, and I think it’s very important for who I am.

Rob talks about a great intentional giving back.

My friend is so generous, I became really happy when her book comes out. I made a commitment.

If we refuse those, then we are limiting ourselves. How much we can help is limited.

I want to encourage you in the process giving, giving & giving.
