Introduction to the Church at Ephesus
The church at Ephesus was the epicenter of Christianity in the second half of the first century. The brethren were filled with zeal for the Lord in spite of living in an overwhelming pagan culture. They had some of the best servants leading them through the years: Paul, Apollos, Priscilla and Aquila, Timothy, and John.
History of the church at Ephesus:
50-52 AD - "Planted" by the Spirit via the work of Paul, Apollos, Aquil, and Priscilla
54-56 AD - Paul "nourishes" them as they met in the Hall of Tyrannus
57 AD - Paul encourages the elders to "weed" out the false teachers
60-64 AD - Timothy helps the brethren "mature" in their love for the Lord (1 & 2 Timothy)
70-90 AD (Estimated) - John serves the church at Ephesus (1, 2, 3 John)
Yet, with all this growth and influence, when we get to the Revelation, Ephesus is the first to be warned by Jesus to "Repent and return to the first works." What happened?
