With much emotion and discernment, Peter warns Christians about the ploy of false teachers. This lesson is common among the apostles as they approach the end of their lives. However, Peter doesn't just warn, he gives us insight into how to spot a false teacher:  

1. They follow corrupt desires (vs 10) 

2. They despise authority (vs 10)  

3. They boast but lack knowledge (vs 12) 

4. They approve of sexual sins (vs 14)  

5. They are greedy for money and praise (vs 15)   

Let's take these words to heart as Peter implores all of us to be mindful of the destructive false teaching that is all around us.

Be aware! This is the plea from Peter as he writes to Christians not long before his death. God is not slack concerning promises to save or condemn. Consider the examples of...  

1. Angels who are cast into hell  

2. Evil men and women in the day of Noah  

3. Sodom and Gomorrah   

While these examples remind us of God's judicious wrath, Peter wants all of us to be comforted by the fact that God "knows how to the rescue the righteous." Even in the midst of evil, the Lord is looking to the righteous and providing a way of escape.

Peter continues his quest to reinforce to the brethren that God's word holds all things to "life and godliness" (vs 3). So, he seeks to "remind" (vs 12), "stir" (vs 13), and "make every effort" (vs 15) to stress the importance of God's promises to them so they can "recall" these things when he is gone (vs 15).   

These are the words of a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ who knows his days are limited on this earth.  With that in mind, he stresses the power of the prophetic Word. All of it is trustworthy. Each writer of the Bible spoke as they were moved by God:  

1. We saw Jesus (eyewitness testimony) 

2. We heard God speak (Father's testimony) 

3. We confirmed the Word (Holy Spirit inspiration)   

There is no greater teacher than the Holy Spirit. Listen to Him!
