This is a famous hymn in Tamil.
Thirugnana Sambandhar, called generally as Sambandhar, was one of the great Shaivite saints of Tamilnadu. There were sixty three such Shaivite saints known as Nayanmars and Sambandhar was one of the important among them. He was a child prodigy. Once, the Pandya country of Tamil Nadu was under the influence of Jains, with the king also converting himself to jainism. At that time the queen who was a shaivite requested Sambandar and another saint Manikka Vasagar to visit their country and bring it back to shaivism. At that time both the saints were in a holy place called Vedaranyam. It was feared that the Jains were experts in evil magic. Then Sambandar sang this prayer, which essentially tells that neither the planets, nor the evil mantras nor the wild animals nor any other thing can cause harm to the devotees of Lord Shiva.
This powerful hymn pleads for Lord Shiva’s's protection against the ill effects of planets and also to overcome all obstacles and dangers.
The significance of this hymn is that those who chant it or those who listen to it will find that all the evils eventually turn to good. This is what is reiterated again and again in these verses. It is believed that if this prayer is sung with devotion, it would definitely save us from anything that causes evil.
