One of the important facets of the Indian way of life is the Bhajan. Bhajan is any type of devotional song. It has no fixed form. It is normally lyrical, expressing love for the Divine. The term bhajanam is a Sanskrit word which means reverence or what is called Bhakti or devotion. As a bhajan has no prescribed form, or set rules, it is in free form. It belongs to a genre of music and arts that developed during the time of the Bhakti Movement that spread from the south of India throughout the entire subcontinent during the Moghul era. Anecdotes and episodes from scriptures, the teachings of saints and descriptions of gods have all been the subject of bhajans. There are different styles and there are a number of composers in various indian languages.

Saint Tulsidas who composed the Ramacharita manas in Awadhi Language has composed a number of bhajans. This is a bhajan composed by Saint Tulsidas on Lord Rama in this case in the Sanskrit language.

They gifted everything to the world without seeking fame or any kind of gain. Welfare of the world was their sole objective.

In Carnatic music, all the South Indian languages have been used prolifically, in addition to the ancient classical Indian language, namely Sanskrit. The Telugu language, of course, has been especially widely used in the compositions. But there is a wide collection of this music in Tamil and also in Kannada, and to an extent in Malayalam. There are also a few songs in northern languages like Marathi, Hindi and Braj Bhasha and this adds to the rich variety of Carnatic music.

This song is a composition in Tamil by Neelakanta Sivan on Lord Shiva. This song Sambo Mahadeva is one of his famous compositions. It is in the Raga Bowli and is set to Roopaka Taala.

In the earlier song you heard a composition by Papanasam Sivan on Lord Ganesha. As I mentioned earlier, though music, in general, transcends barriers like religion, caste, creed, sex, language, etc., carnatic music is strongly attached to and influenced by Hinduism.

In Carnatic music, all the South Indian languages have been used prolifically, in addition to the ancient classical Indian language, namely Sanskrit. There are three major composer-musicians in Carnatic music who are collectively known as the ‘Trinity of carnatic music’, also known as ‘The three jewels of carnatic music’ who all belonged to 18th century. They are Saint Thyagaraja, Muthusamy Dikshitar and Syama Sastri.

This piece of vocal music sung by Nirmala Ramachandran is a composition of Syama Sastri on Goddess Kamakshi. It is in the raga Madhyamavati and is set to Adi Taala.
