  • Hymn-Sri Ramodantam- Bala Kandam-Slokas-M. Venkataraman

We all know about Valmiki Ramayana, consisting of 24000 verses, expounded by sage Valmiki. There is another scholar, who has composed in just 200 verses, the seven chapters of the Ramayana that was written by sage Valmiki. This is known as Sri Ramodantam.

I have given a brief introduction about this in one of my earlier presentations. I propose to present Sri Ramodantam in fourteen episodes-first the summary of each Kanda followed by the slokas in the next.

The first episode dealing with the summary of Bala kandam has been presented earlier. This is the second episode dealing with the slokas of Bala Kandam.

  • Hymn-Introduction to Sri Ramodantam-M.

The author of this work is unknown. But it is said that one Parameshwara Kavi has composed this in the 15th century. In Sri Ramodantam, he has presented the entire Ramayana in his inimitable and simple style. This work also has the

seven chapters namely-Bala Kanda, Ayodhya Kanda, Aranya Kanda, Kishkinda Kanda, Sundara Kanda, Yudha Kanda and Uttara Kanda.

Sri Ramodantam is a minor poetical composition called in Sanskrit as Lagukavya. It is in simple Sanskrit and is

generally prescribed as study material for the beginners in Sanskrit language. The term Sriramodantam is composed of two words ‘Srirama’ and ‘udantam’ meaning ‘the story
    of Srirama’.

In the succeeding presentations, I shall tell this Ramodantam in fourteen episodes- first the summary of each Kanda followed by the recitation of the slokas in the next. This is already available as a book and also as an audio book with leading booksellers like Google Playbooks and Apple.

  • Hymn-The Bhagavat Gita-Canto 6-M. Venkataraman

The Bhagavat Gita is one of the main religious literature in the Hindu way of life. It contains about 700 verses divided into 18 cantos. It is the essence of the philosophy

contained in the Upanishads and is a part of the Mahabharata which describes the story of the Pandavas and the Kouravas. The development of the various
incidents in the life of the Pandavas and the Kouravas ultimately leads to the war in Kurukshetra wherein the Pandavas finally win the battle.

When Arjuna, the great warrior of the Pandava brothers sees the Kourava army in the battlefield, he is overwhelmed with concern because they are all his kinsmen. He gets terrified. Not because of fear of battle but because of emotions. Krishna who is the incarnation

of the Almighty God was acting as his  charioteer. Arjuna tells Krishna, ‘My limbs give way. My mouth is getting parched. I feel shaky. My bow slips from my hand. My skin burns all over. My mind is whirling as though I cannot hold on to myself. I see evil portends.’

A conversation ensues between Krishna and Arjuna and this conversation is the Bhagavat Gita.

I am presenting here the recitation of the verses of the Bhagavat Gita in a series. Now I present the recitation of Canto 6. The Dhyana Slokas and earlier cantos have

    been covered in earlier episodes.

  • Hymn-Sri Sita Rama Stotram-M. Venkataraman

This is a hymn in praise of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita. It describes the attributes and compassion of Rama and Sita.

According to legends, this hymn is said to have been composed by Lord Hanuman.

The hymn consists of ten verses based on simple sentences like this.

Rama is the Lord of Ayodhya and a great ornament of the Raghu dynasty. Sita is the queen of Mithila and a great

jewel of the Janaka clan. He is from the lineage of Surya. She is from the lineage of Chandra.

Rama is the son of Dasaratha, born to Kousalya and Sage Vasishta is his family Priest. Sita who manifested from the

Earth is the daughter of Janaka and Sage Sadananda is her family Priest.

His broad eyes are like lotuses. Her eyes resemble the indeevara flowers. He has the attraction of the moon rays.

She has the face resembling the moon. His gait resembles an elephant and she walks like a swan.

Rama applies sandal paste to His chest. Sita decorates Herself with Kunkum. While he keeps a rope in His hands, her hand adorns a lotus. He resembles the dark cloud and she dazzles like gold.

Rama protects the devotees who surrender to him. Sita is pleased with the devotion. He sits on the divine throne and she adorns the divine garments and garlands.

Rama always keeps glancing at Sita and she lovingly invites his glances. They reflect each other. They are the great Divine Couple in the three worlds.

I sincerely and devoutly surrender to them and sing and chant their praise. When we sincerely pray to them with ardent devotion, we shall become close to this Divine Couple and all our problems will vanish.

The phalasruti says that this hymn praising Rama and Sita is being chanted as ordained by Sri Hanuman who has

prayed to them with these lines. The person who sincerely reads and recites this hymn shall get his desires fulfilled.

  • Hymn-Raghuveera Gadyam-M. Venkataraman

Swamy Vedanta Desikan is one of the greatest Vaishnavite scholars and thinkers of India. He belonged to the 13th century. He had written a number of philosophical as well as religious and poetical works in several languages.

Raghuveera Gadyam is one of his important works. Gadyam means prose. Normally most of the hymns are

in poetic forms. But this hymn is in prose form. And this hymn portrays the heroic form of Lord Rama, the descendant of the Raghu dynasty. Hence it is known as Raghuveera Gadyam.

Leaving out the single sloka at the beginning and the two slokas at the end, this work consists of 94 addresses to Lord Rama in prose form, some small and some big. The entire epic of Valmiki Ramayana has been epitomised in these 94 sentences called as choornikas. The outstanding

traits of Rama are all touched upon. Every address makes mention of at least one characteristic trait of that Repository of all auspicious qualities.

  • Hymn-Shri Hayagriva stotram-M. Venkataraman

This hymn is a composition of Swamy Vedanta Desikan. Swamy Desikan is a great Poet-Saint. He belonged to the

13th century. He had composed many hymns and many other works based on the Visishtadvaita philosophy. Notable among his great works are the
‘Yadavabhudayam’ and ‘Paduka Sahasram’. His authorship of the Sri Hayagriva Stotram is one of the most potent of his collection of hymns and intellectual writings.

Sri Hayagriva is regarded as the Supreme God of Knowledge. It is considered that one who prays to Hayagriva shall be blessed with all knowledge and wisdom. Students and others pursuing academic goals will find this hymn to be of great assistance.

Hayagriva is considered as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Haya means horse and Greeva means neck and Hayagreeva is the horse-faced form of Lord Vishnu. He has the appearance of a lovely white horse with a human body. His body has the shine and sparkle of a white crystal. He has the sacred disc Sudarshana Chakra, the

holy conch Paanchajanyam, a book, and the Jnana Mudra in his four hands. While seated with his spouse Lakshmi, He is revered as Sri Lakshmi Hayagriva.

The hymn has 33 verses set in 6 different poetic

meters. In the first verse Swamy Desikan points out that Sri Hayagreeva is the integrated form of Pure Knowledge and Supreme Bliss. He goes on to describe that the Lord is the manifestation of the effulgent light.

In the thirty second verse, Swamy Desikan blesses us with the Dhyana slokam for Sri Hayagreeva. He praises the Lord as the one with a lustre that never diminishes and visualizes Him as being seated on a beautiful white Lotus. He sees in the hands of the Lord of unblemished

attributes, a book symbolizing sacred knowledge, the divine disc, the Conch and the Jnana upadesa mudra. Through this Dhyana slokam he appeals to Lord
Hayagreeva  to appear in his mind and drench him with His Vision.

It is said that at this point of time the Lord responded to his appeal and appeared before him at the hill of

    Thiruvaheendrapuram and blessed him.

  • Hymn-Shiva Tandava Stotram-M. Venkataraman

This is a hymn said to have been composed by the

great demon Ravana. Ravana committed the sin of abducting Sita and was punished by Lord Rama. We all know that. But Ravana was also a great devotee of Lord
Shiva and he has composed this hymn praising Lord Shiva.

There is a story behind this hymn. It is said that on one occasion Ravana tried to lift Mount Kailash in his hand to take Lord Shiva along with him to Sri Lanka. To prevent this, Lord Shiva pressed his toe. In the process, he crushed the fingers of Ravana and Ravana cried in pain. And to escape from the act of Lord Shiva, Ravana sang this hymn and thus pleased Lord Shiva.

The hymn represents the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva that eliminates all negative energies. This contains 15 verses each describing in great detail the various qualities of Lord Shiva and his eternal beauty.
