  • Hymn-The Bhagavat Gita-Canto 3-M. Venkataraman

The Bhagavat Gita is one of the main religious literature in the Hindu way of life. It contains about 700 verses divided into 18 cantos. It is the essence of the philosophy

contained in the Upanishads and is a part of the Mahabharata which describes the story of the Pandavas and the Kouravas. The development of the various
incidents in the life of the Pandavas and the Kouravas ultimately leads to the war in Kurukshetra wherein the Pandavas finally win the battle.

When Arjuna, the great warrior of the Pandava brothers sees the Kourava army in the battlefield, he is overwhelmed with concern because they are all his kinsmen. He gets terrified. Not because of fear of battle but because of emotions. Krishna who is the incarnation

of the Almighty God was acting as his  charioteer. Arjuna tells Krishna, ‘My limbs give way. My mouth is getting parched. I feel shaky. My bow slips from my hand. My skin burns all over. My mind is whirling as though I cannot hold on to myself. I see evil portends.’

A conversation ensues between Krishna and Arjuna and this conversation is the Bhagavat Gita.

I am presenting here the recitation of the verses of the Bhagavat Gita in a series. Here I present the recitation of Canto 3. The Dhyana Slokas and earlier cantos have been

    covered in earlier episodes.

  • Hymn-Sriramastotram by Indra, the King of gods (M. Venkataraman)

Most of us are aware of Valmiki Ramayanam. It is considered to be the original and oldest version of the
Ramayana. Adhyathma Ramayanam is a spiritual version of Ramayanam and it finds a place in the Brahmanda Purana. It is the portrayal of a conversation between Lord Siva and Goddess Parvati as reported by Lord Brahma to Sage Narada. Its author is considered to be Sage Veda Vyasa. This is a much smaller work than the
Valmiki Ramayanam and contains about 4,000 verses.

The Adhyatma Ramayanam contains many hymns. In the Yudha Kanda, after the annihilation of Ravana, the gods hail the victory of Lord Rama. In Canto 13 of the Yudha Kanda, Indra, the king of gods, praises Lord Rama and that hymn is this Srirama Stotram.

  • Hymn-Vinayagar Agaval-M. Venkataraman

Avvaiyar is one of the important and famous woman poet-saints of Tamilnadu. In Tamil literature, there are many poetesses with the name of Avvaiyar. However, there are two of them who are well known. One of them lived during the Sangam period and was close to the kings of that period like Pari Vallal and Adhigaman. It is said that she wrote a number of poems of a work known as Purananuru.

The other Avvaiyar was a contemporary of poet Kamban. Kamban wrote the Ramayanam in Tamil known as Kamba Ramayanam. This Avvaiyar was an elderly lady well known to Tamil people. Her

works, the Athichudi and the Kondraivendan contain universally acceptable values of life in just a single line. They are normally prescribed in schools
for children of primary classes. Two of her other works known as Moodurai and Nalvazhi are generally prescribed for children of higher classes. All these
works instruct and explain the basic wisdom that should govern the ordinary course of life. Vinayagar Agaval is another one of her great works and is a hymn on Lord Ganesha.

Lord Ganesha is popularly known as Pillaiyar in Tamilnadu. He is also known as Vinayagar meaning ‘he who removes obstacles’. Agaval means blank poetry and Vinayagar Agaval is a poem on Lord Ganesha. It is in Tamil and this hymn is popular in Tamil Nadu. The hymn brings out the mastery of Avvaiyar in the philosophy of Hindu religion and in particular the Saivism.
