In this 25th episode, host Eric Y. Lapointe virtually heads back to Quebec to explore Canada's French-language production hub to talk about how this province punches well above its weight by leveraging their tight-budget productions and turn them into world-famous stories. For this conversation he sits down with three international sales executives: Mélanie Ratté of Zone 3, Kathleen Préfontaine of Aetios Productions and Barbara Vallant of Aroma TV / KOTV.
The biggest theme that shines throughout this episode is just how important selling scripted formats has become, for Quebec producers, over the years. Check out the episode until the end to be inspired and learn all the interesting details that came out of this conversation.

She demonstrated her outstanding ability for building relationships with industry players in Canada and around the world. As Senior Director, International Distribution & Business Development, she is now responsible for expanding Zone3’s international footprint.
KATHLEEN PRÉFONTAINE / AETIOS:
Kathleen has a BFA in Design Art from Concordia University and a Minor in Marketing Management from HEC Montréal. In 2006, she began her career in the television format distribution business at Distraction Formats as the Director of Marketing. She then migrated to various Quebec production companies (La Presse Télé, Attraction Média and Trio Orange) where she established the new distribution department. She has participated in the international sales of the shows: Les Parent (France, Greece, Israel, Poland, Russia and Air Transat), En direct de l’univers (France and Lebanon) & 30 Lives (Brazil, France). At Aetios, she manages all aspects of distribution and participates in the development of new series.
BARBARA VALLANT / AROMA TV / KOTV

The bulk of her career has been focused on international TV distribution, with her first steps selling THE WORLD LIVE, a 90-second LIVE feed around the world from the unmanned camera network, earthTV. She effectively launched this previously unheard of, difficult -to-place segment on international news channels, including CNN, CBC, FRANCE 2, LCI (TF1), TRAVEL CHANNEL, just to name a few. This eventually brought her path towards TV formats, where in 2009, she became a TV sales agent and founded her one-woman company, AROMA-TV.

In today's Global VID podcast episode, we dive into User Generated Content (UGC) which is essentially all of that self-made content that you see on YouTube and other social media platforms... and in this episode, we talk with Jonathan Skogmo, the CEO of Jukin Media (with content brands such as Fail Army, The Pet Collective, People Are Awesome), arguably the BIGGEST UGC production company in the world. We caught Johnathan Skogmo at a pivotal moment in his career as Jukin Media just sold their company to Trusted Media Brands... ever heard of them?

Well... Trusted Media Brands (a.k.a. the original Reader's Digest Association company) is about to celebrate their 100th anniversary in February of 2022, when they published their very first edition of Reader's Digest, promoting the magazine through direct mail marketing by sending 5,000 letters to nurses and schoolteachers. By 1927, they had 30,00 subscribers, by 1939: 3 MILLION! By 1973? Over 30 MILLION! So what do these two brands have in common? Hang tight.
Fast-forward to 2014, a CNBC article explained that Trusted Media Brands was going through its second bankruptcy in 5 years, right around the time when Bonnie Kintzer became the company's President. Nice challenge, huh? By 2017, the company cleaned up its debt and Trusted Media Brands started growing again as a digital-first company.
So what do these companies have in common? In our episode, Johnathan Skogmo, labels Reader's Digest as one of the very first UGC content producers as they would often source articles from their readers. Finally, in the middle of the pandemic, Jukin Media was approached as Trusted Media Brands was looking for a video content company to align with their business. And this is where our podcast begins...

What makes Vancouver so amazing & challenging at the same time?
Well, Vancouver and its suburbs are the former homes of world famous actors such as Ryan Reynolds, Michael J. Fox, Seth Rogen and the list goes on. Located a mere 2.5 hour flight away from LA or a 2.5 hour drive away from Seattle, Vancouver has become one of the major filming hubs, just behind Los Angeles and New York City. The Greater Vancouver Area represents a $3B+ local filming industry, but it remains heavily reliant on production services instead of original programming & intellectual property (IP) and there is always the risk of a brain drain down south.
That does not mean Vancouver does not have people like Liz, Brian & Rob working hard behind the scenes to create new original IP opportunities for local producers and ensuring that talent remains local.

Guest Details for Global VID Season 2, Episode 5:

Skip this episode at your own risk... because Sandra Lehner gives great insight into this next generation and how to best target them in the not-so-distant future.
