Glorious Mysteries (Wednesdays & Sundays)

Listen Later

The Glorious Mysteries of the Holy Rosary focus on the triumph and exaltation of Jesus Christ and His Blessed Mother, the Virgin Mary. These mysteries celebrate the victory of the Resurrection and the hope of eternal life. They are traditionally prayed on Wednesdays and Sundays, outside of the seasons of Advent and Lent.

The five Glorious Mysteries are:

1. The Resurrection of Jesus

This mystery reflects on Jesus’ glorious Resurrection from the dead on the third day after His crucifixion (Matthew 28:1-10). By rising from the dead, Jesus conquers sin and death, giving us hope for eternal life.

2. The Ascension of Jesus into Heaven

After appearing to His disciples for 40 days, Jesus ascended into heaven, returning to His Father in glory (Acts 1:9-11). This mystery reminds us that Jesus is now seated at the right hand of God, interceding for us.

3. The Descent of the Holy Spirit

This mystery commemorates Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles and the Virgin Mary in the form of tongues of fire (Acts 2:1-4). This event marks the birth of the Church and the beginning of the Apostles’ mission to spread the Gospel.

4. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

This mystery reflects on the belief that Mary, at the end of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heaven (Revelation 12:1). This event honors Mary’s unique role as the Mother of God and her participation in Christ’s victory over sin and death.

5. The Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

This final mystery celebrates Mary being crowned as Queen of Heaven and Earth. In heaven, she is honored as the Queen Mother, interceding for all of us and reigning alongside her Son, Jesus (Revelation 12:1-2).

How to Pray the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary

Here is the general structure for praying the Rosary, which can be applied to any of the sets of mysteries, including the Glorious Mysteries:

1. Make the Sign of the Cross

Begin by making the sign of the cross and reciting the Apostles’ Creed to express your faith.

2. Pray the Our Father

Pray the Our Father on the first large bead, offering it for the intentions of the Holy Father and the Church.

3. Pray Three Hail Marys

On the next three small beads, pray three Hail Marys, asking for an increase in faith, hope, and charity.

4. Pray the Glory Be

After the three Hail Marys, pray the Glory Be to the Father, and you may also pray the Fatima Prayer:

“O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy.”

5. Announce the First Glorious Mystery

Announce the first Glorious Mystery (The Resurrection) and then pray the Our Father on the large bead that follows.

6. Pray Ten Hail Marys

On each of the ten small beads, pray a Hail Mary while meditating on the first mystery.

7. Pray the Glory Be and Fatima Prayer

After the ten Hail Marys, pray the Glory Be and the Fatima Prayer as before.

8. Continue with the Other Mysteries

Repeat this process for each of the remaining Glorious Mysteries (The Ascension, The Descent of the Holy Spirit, The Assumption, and The Coronation of Mary).

9. Conclude the Rosary

After completing all five decades, pray the Hail, Holy Queen and the concluding prayer:

“O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech Thee, that meditating upon these mysteries of the most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.”

10. Make the Sign of the Cross

Finish the Rosary by making the sign of the cross.

This meditative prayer focuses not only on the words but also on the contemplation of each mystery, drawing you deeper into the life of Christ and the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
