  • What a Functional Psychiatry Team Looks Like: The New Standard for a Modern Mental Health Team
Episode 11: This is my favorite duo in private mental health care: a psychologist and energy healer working under the same roof. Interview with Julie Crowe and Dr. Heather Wadeson, PhD.
As a psychiatrist, I always have my ears open to client feedback about therapists around town. Springfield, Missouri was no different. That's when I learned about Julie Crowe working in the same office as Dr. Heather Wadeson, PhD. We were all fast friends though I've only met them a few times in person. I do all of my work remotely now. I quickly started presenting the three of us as loosely forming a Functional Psychiatry team. My daily soap box at work was about holistic mental health care with my patients and I used Julie and Heather as a model example while I worked in Springfield. My hope is that more people will follow through with holistic referrals!

Contact Julie Crowe at [email protected] or by calling 417-860-3062. Be sure to leave a message because she's probably doing another appointment. Energy healing takes longer because the practitioner has to do certain practices both before and after the session. For this reason, energy clearing session typically cost more than a massage in a particular geographical area.
Julie Crowe is certified in several ancient practices and is, in my view, a savant when it comes to using them. Her personal style integrates several (like 5-7) different types of practices, trainings, techniques and intuition all at the same time. She is a phenom. I get high watching people like her work.
Reiki, which is love energy projected toward the client for an hour.
Emotion Code, which is releasing trapped, stuck energy in the body painlessly.
Chakra Balancing, which is body work involving all 7 of your main endocrine zones.

  • Interview with documentarian Penny Lavin, The Healing Field: Exploring Energy & Consciousness
Episode 10: Another hero that does not disappoint. Penny and Ron Lavin's One Light Healing Touch school started in 1996 and has helped hundreds and thousands of people all over the world.

Ambassador Slides HANDOUT - Penny Lavin contact information
I first reached out to Penny and Ron just to thank them for their body of work. To tell them that "if I had it to do all over again I would not got to medical school, but would do their class and I would have been healing people this entire time."
    What happened next was unexpected.
Penny said "Daniel, you'd make a great master healer." This was music to my ears because I still felt in the beginning of 2025 like I had been burned out by my profession as an Army Psychiatrist and civilian Medical Director. The jobs drained my empathy and compassion, just like I wrote about 10 years ago in my internationally cited burnout publication in the prestigious journal, Academic Psychiatry.
Penny Lavin's documentary is available in Gaia and Amazon
Fast forward through a lot of documentaries and it turns out that empathy can actually be studied, measured and analyzed with biofeedback. Well, I felt it as an Army Psychiatrist pulling double duty in 2022 on the Texas-Mexico Border and providing telepsychiatry to four federal prisons in Texas. I felt the pain on all sides closing in, pain from the migrants that lost loved ones crossing Mexico due to cartels, mass murderers, the military casualties helping with border patrol. As a dedicated healer, like Penn Lavin, I never waivered in my compassion towards my clients. But I did learn the hard way that when compassion is completely drained due to past trauma's quantum drag, that I wanted to simply quit it all.
With this backdrop, this podcast interview interjects one of the worlds foremost accomplished healers and teachers. Penny Price Lavin is the second hero I've ever met that did not disappoint. (The first was COL Scott Bier with the Texas Army National Guard.)
Finding her Basic Training class in early 2025 helped my with a few of my symptoms at the time:
Terrible anger about my chronic pain and insomnia
Grief over not being able to work as many hours as I used to
Lack of enjoyment in life, not looking forward to living 20-30 more years in chronic pain
Yes, I felt this way in 2025 due to chronic pain, but then that issue spiraled into complete exhaustion that affects everything. Soon, I was no fun to be around so I just stayed in the garage gym doing what I could to keep studying self-care, take different classes, and become more holistic so I could help myself. I took several certification classes but the One Light Healing Touch Program was, by far, the most impactful.
Email Penny Lavin for $25 off the Day of Healing
    UPCOMING DATES:
Day of Healing $150 ($125 if you tell Penny you heard about it on the Gluten-Free Psychiatry Podcast) - October 25 and November 6, 2026 - Register no later than 10 days in advance.

  • Urgent Times Call for Resurgence of Mastermind Groups
Episode 9: The United States ranks 36th in literacy. The populace is entering into a Second Dark Ages and drinking poison in the water. Artificial intelligence, auto-spelling, auto-correction, auto-complete is all chipping away at our brain's opportunity to practice working. The censorship war is has been in full swing for years now.

    Need for a New Renaissance
People have always been able to solve their own problems, given the right capacity, opportunity and motivation. Mastermind Groups create opportunity where there is none, by harnessing lessons learned from the first Dark Ages.
Human imagination, trial and error took hold during the Renaissance and provided the free-thinking environment for leaders of the Industrial Revolution.
What did the leaders have in common?
They possessed 17 traits and held regular, active Mastermind Groups. Groups worked together in harmony with a definite major purpose. Individuals can have a separate purpose from the group, but agree to work together in harmony.
    Urgent Times
Today the challenges before us are different than the Dark Ages, but the Great Reset appears already underway. Our challenges today are to our health, security, food, water and exposure to toxicity and radiation.
The leadership required for a successful Mastermind Group is similar to that of a military commander. At higher levels of military echelons, the departments the commander must oversee are very diverse and highly specialized. For example, one Commander I knew came from an artillery background but was in charge of a Combat Engineer unit that could build cities. The Commander didn't have to know everybody's job. The role of the Commander is to get effective work from the team, delegate authority, and to deal with people causing disruption to the organization.
Harmony is the watchword. From a place of support and safe vulnerability, comes innovation. These principles are at the core of the successful way the US military decentralizes decision-making where possible. Therefore, racism and nepotism are rendered impotent. Marry a harmonious group, working actively towards a definite major purpose, together with humility and you have a recipe for outstanding success.

  • The PFAS Detox: Human Excretion of Polyfluoroalkyl Substance via Ionic Foot Bath Electrolysis
Episode 3: PFAS comes out of the body during Ionic Foot Bath.
    https://vimeo.com/1055803788
Download the Ambassador Slides HANDOUT to share.
    Introduction
Polyfluoryl-alkyl Substances (PFAS) represent 15,000 different variations of long chains of fluoride, a known neurotoxin, that bioaccumulate in plants and animals.1 In humans, they have been associated with kidney cancer, increased cholesterol, and thyroid problems to name a few.2 PFAS is commonly referred to as “forever chemicals” due to the fact they stay in the body from 3-27 years, depending on the form.3 Ongoing bioaccumulation risks remain for those working in industries with frequent exposure, dump sites, contaminated water supplies, food packaging, painting, electroplating, carpet installation, carpet treatment, serving as a firefighter, working with ski wax, waterproofing material and construction materials.1, 4 Public awareness has not yet caught up to the existing science and there is a paucity of recommendations available for the informed consumer.
The available data for daily exposure for the general population to PFAS comes out of Canada and Norway.5 Daily consumption was 90% dietary with intake of 73 ng/day, on par with dust and air inhalation exposure. A follow-up study combined types of PFAS and estimated daily consumption as high as 250 ng per day. This study aims to validate ionic foot bath treatments remove PFAS from the human body, paving the way to correlate with improved health outcomes.
This study analyzes the removal of PFAS from a human subject by an inexpensive ionic foot bath machine.
    Materials
Hand-crafted copper foot basin from India. (I now recommend using the plastic tubs to avoid electrical current problems.)
Ionic Cleanse Detox machine from Better Health Company, round double coil array. Model BHC-CTRL-01, 24 W, 2A, 12V DC.
One gallon per session of distilled water, steam distillation from Premium Waters, packaged 05/27/24 12:06, best by 05/27/2025.
    GreenPan anodized ceramic cooking pot
Pink Himalayan salt, 1/4 cup per session
    Methods
An initial serum PFAS level was obtained using the PFASure test from Any Lab Test Now.
One 30-minute foot bath session was conducted with the Ionic Cleanse Detox Machine using distilled water with 1/4 cup of pink Himalayan salt.
Water sample testing was conducted on both the clean and dirty foot bath water using SimpleLab.

  • Early Potential Biomarkers of Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Bioaccumulation
Episode 2: When to get your blood tested for PFAS.
    https://vimeo.com/1055803097
Download the Ambassador Slides HANDOUT to share.
    Introduction
The globe has become polluted to such an extent that industrial contaminants can be found in the air, soil, water, food supply and is a cyclical problem in the trash and disposal industry.1-3 The processing and packaging of food itself and the agricultural contamination add these chemicals into the human dietary consumption chain.4, 5 Many contaminants can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin during bathing, showering, brushing the teeth, etc.
Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) represent 15,000 different variations of chemical compounds. The known health effects from PFAS exposure can be summarized as neurotoxic, carcinogenic, and fertility threat.6-8 Clinically, patients exhibit known laboratory results, signs and symptoms when exposed to PFAS including high cholesterol, low Vitamin D,  thyroid disorders, Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder9-11.  There are no studies on increasing its bioelimination, yet the media has dubbed these “forever chemicals” because the original PFOS (with 8 carbons) takes over 27 years to eliminate from the body. These chemicals are still being released into the water supply in thousands of communities according to the United States Environmental Working Group.
Unfortunately, this Environmental Working Group Map is incomplete. It fails to list every environmental contamination site leaving citizens to have to test their own water and blood.  One example of a PFAS contamination site is in Springfield, Missouri where there is PFAS in the water supply due to ongoing industrial contamination.12 The PFAS is spilling into the James River that flows Southwest from Springfield to Table Rock Lake in Branson, Missouri, which is a popular tourist destination. This water contamination is thought to be far-reaching, affecting Northwest Arkansas and is gaining the attention of tort attorneys. The PFAS level in Springfield, MO is above the limit placed by the Environmental Protection Agency at 4 parts per trillion and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources has organized a PFAS Workgroup to help the community address the contamination.
In this environment, the same clinical trend in the scientific literature was visibly noticed by the staff at a busy psychiatric urgent care in Springfield, MO. Staff frequently spoke of how often otherwise healthy people had low Vitamin D, thyroid dysfunction, abnormal lipids, pain and symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder at all ages. In the majority of cases, these were the only medical problems these people had. The rates of abnormal labs and medications/supplements for Vitamin D, thyroid dysfunction and dyslipidemia in this vulnerable population are reported here.
    Methods
Chart reviews were conducted for patients attending a psychiatric urgent care in Springfield, MO in July 2024. Inclusion criteria was having had a full panel of laboratory studies within the previous 18 months. Labs had to include a Vitamin D level, full lipid panel and full thyroid panel with at least TSH, T4 (conjucated/unconjucated), and T3 . Exclusion criteria were patients missing laboratory studies for either Vitamin D, lipid panel or thyroid panel. Age, gender, number of medical diagnoses, vitamin D supplement usage, TSH, T4 (or free T4), T3, total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, calculated VLDL, calculated HDL, and statin use were studied.
    Results
Twenty-six patients were included in this study (n=26). Ages ranged from 8-68. Thirty-eight percent were male and 62% were female which is typical in outpatient psychiatric practice. Out of nine total lab tests, seven labs were above the expected 5% outliers of the reference range (Table 1). Over 73% of patients had elevated calculated LDL, 46.2% had abnormal total cholesterol, 38.5% had low Vitamin D, 30.8% had abnormal TSH values, 19.2% had low HDL, 15.4% had elevated triglycerides, and 7.7% had abnormal T3 triiodothyronine values. Thyroxine (T4) and calculated VLDL were the only tests that had less than the 5% of patients with abnormal results.
Table 1: Number of patients with and without abnormal labs. Ratios and percentages are calculated. Percentages of patients with abnormal labs over the expected 5% are highlighted in green.
    Discussion
Bioaccumulation of pollutants is known to cause endocrine disruption. Early detection of bioaccumulation is important for medical surveillance efforts to understand the scope of the problem, further identify at-risk populations, and contribute to reducing the current cancer epidemic.
This study demonstrated the need for further research in epidemiologic studies, hazard identification, mitigation of pollutants, education for the public and researching detoxification outcomes.
Limitations of this study include low sample size, lack of controls for medical problems and medications (except for Vitamin D supplementation which was studied).
    Recommendations
The following is recommended as a Decision Tool to help guide an individual to get a PFAS blood test. The presence of the Primary Criteria is a strong recommendation for getting a blood test for PFAS. The Secondary Criteria may also be considered to increase the recommendation likelihood for a PFAS blood test.
    Primary Criteria
    High Cholesterol
    Low Vitamin D
    ADHD or Pain
    Secondary Criteria
Neurological complaint (pain, impulsivity, autism, etc)
    Endocrine disorder
    Infertility
    Cancer

Mindshift Care - where modern psychiatry meets quantum psychology and toxin-free living.
Imagine how much better you would feel after detoxing from neurotoxins such as PFAS, BPA, Parabens, Glyphosate, Fluoride, Botulinum Toxin, and Heavy Metals (aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury). That's the ideal and expanding on the ideal circumstances for optimum cognitive health is what the Gluten-Free Psychiatry Podcast is all about. The slogan at Mindshift Care is "An Independent Voice for Behavioral Health", so we'll take a look at how these neurotoxins affect mental health without the outside influence of pharmaceutical companies or greedy employers.
    Medications Containing Gluten
Did you know that at least half of all medications contain gluten? Have you read the book Wheat Belly?
Gluten-free psychiatry involves using a specialty, compounding pharmacy that makes pure versions of medications in a vegan capsule. Generic trazodone for sleep can cost $400 (50 mg nightly x 30 day supply), but at least you could take it if you had Ulcerative Colitis or Celiac Sprue!
In 2012, pharmaceutical companies were force by the U.S. Congress to reveal which medications and manufacturers are making pills with gluten. The 2013 follow up study is cited below with the top 200 most-prescribed medications.1 The results were surprising to me: “ practically all of the psychiatric medications I prescribe were on that list and half of the manufacturers of generic contained gluten and half did not. As a physician, it's impossible for me to know which manufacturer a pharmacy is using so we're all flying blind.
    In my practice...
Most people can't afford, or won't make a priority, medications that cost hundreds of dollars per month so I don't prescribe this often, but it does exist!
Patients with Alpha-GAL tick-biting, meat allergy disease have to do Gluten-Free Psychiatry, especially if anxiety causes anaphylaxis (which I have seen).
I would recommend it in all auto-immune diseases as an ideal. More research is needed. If you have an auto-immune disorder and are interested in detoxing, consider doing before and after blood work to help add to the research pool on this very important topic.

I was the first ever to demonstrate PFAS comes out of the body during ionic foot baths.
