Early on Oct. 16, 2,000 runners will file onto the cleared fifth runway at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to relaunch the Mayor’s 5K on the 5th Runway. The six-year-old event was canceled last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The airport calls it “one of the flattest — and fastest — courses in metro Atlanta.” As an AJC Peachtree Road Race qualifying event, it offers the opportunity for runners to score a good time, which allows them to be placed in an earlier starting wave for the Peachtree and push for a personal best. Kelly Yamanouchi, who covers Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport for the AJC, recently spoke with John Murphy, who works in airside operations and is handling preparations for the event, and longtime runner and frequent flier Mark Davison, who will be running the 5K on the 5th Runway.

Algiers is often described as melding punk aggression with gospel’s soul-searching power, but those are just two of the more prevalent elements in the quartet’s singular sound. It all began back in 2012, though the roots of the band were established much earlier, with the three of the members growing up together in Atlanta. When Jennifer K.N. Heinmiller inherited the million-word project that would become the “Dictionary of Southern Appalachian English,” its principal author had blown past several deadlines, lost his publisher and then died. The dictionary was a unique but expensive undertaking. It represented 85 years of research that would eventually produce a 1,225-page volume weighing about 12 pounds. Former Atlantan David Bruckner’s second feature film, “The Night House” was picked up by Searchlight Pictures for a reported $12 million after its January 2020 Sundance Film Festival world premiere. At its center is a smart, determined schoolteacher whose architect husband has checked out of a seemingly happy marriage by committing suicide. Now she suspects that her husband is contacting her from beyond the grave. Alone in the remote lake house, the woman tries to solve the mystery of her dead husband’s secret life.
