This week the Erins contemplate the “Longest Third Date” on Netflix. When Matt and Khani decided to run to Costa Rica for a spontaneous 3rd date, they had no idea they'd be there for an extended stay. While the setting was sublime, they faced challenges, like securing accommodations in a foreign country while trying to get home. This is a sweet, feel good story, captured thanks to Matt and his CONSTANT filming.
This week the Erins forage through “Cocaine Bear: The True Story” on Peacock. Listen in as guest Riley McCartt brings the Gen Z perspective on the highly anticipated Cocaine Bear movie in contrast with the true to life story. This doc portrays the unbelievable tale that ends with the famous bear incident. There may have never been a more 80's or American Story!
This week the Erins get existential with Holy Hell on Peacock. The Master will teach you enlightenment, but you have to earn it. You might have dance, build a theater, or even give him a massage. Look, just be aware of common cult practices, even when the group doesn't like your labels! And never trust a guru in a Speedo....
This week, the Erins live vicariously through “Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story,” available for rent on Amazon Prime. New Orleans is like nowhere else in the world in culture and zest for living. On the 50th anniversary of Jazz Fest, performers and organizers discuss why this festival is so special and long running. New Orleans is the birthplace of Jazz, and the Big Easy choice for America's greatest festival.
This week the Erins explore the limits of human endurance in Safety to Nome, available to rent on Amazon. This doc really conveys the cold ass experience of competing in ultra marathon, the Iditarod Trail Invitational. Us lower 48 types might expect to find mushers and sweet doggos in this race, but alas, it is only for walkers, skiers, and bicyclers. Find out why some choose to pit themselves against mother nature in this race that can be up to 1000 miles!
This week the Erins please the cordyceps with Fantastic Fungi on Netflix. Fungi are literally everywhere! They have many talents and uses besides creeping you out. This doc may convince you to join your local mycophiles and get outdoorsy!
This week the Erins take it back to the late 80's with” White Boy” on Netflix. Richard Wershe Jr. was given a life sentence for possession of eight kilos of cocaine in 1988. While the ‘lifer law' in Michigan was modified in 1998, Wershe Jr. was still denied parole years later. White Boy Rick's story was pervasive in pop culture but the real story reveals a 17 year old kid set up for failure by authorities and a sensationalized trial.
This week the Erins slog through “The History of Easter” on Prime video. While Easter is a Christian holiday, many of the themes celebrated alongside the resurrection are pulled in from older practices. Think colored eggs, bunnies, etc. There is also different imagery associated with Easter than what's common for peeps in the United States (we're looking at you France!).The Easter holiday is among the most influential worldwide and how you celebrate can be your own…Or not, we support you!
This week the Erins clutch their pearls while discussing “Money Shot: The Pornhub Story” on Netflix. Pornhub changed the way internet porn is consumed by allowing anyone to upload videos. Without strict oversight, Pornhub becomes controversial as problematic videos are posted with few options for removal. It seems like it should be possible to make it both safe AND profitable for the sex workers!
This week the Erins dig into “Fair Play.” This doc takes a dep dive into domestic inequity. Women have traditionally handled the invisible work that makes society run. By making this often unpaid and undervalued work visible, perhaps a more equitable future is possible on the domestic front!
