President Donald Trump has reopened the battle over birthright citizenship with a narrower strategy targeting commercial birth tourism, visa fraud, foreign-government personnel, and other disputed categories.

Trump is right to confront immigration fraud. American citizenship should mean something, and it should never be marketed like a vacation package. The federal government should prosecute fraudulent operators, strengthen visa screening, secure the border, enforce E-Verify, and remove dangerous criminals who have no lawful right to remain.

But enforcing immigration law and denying citizenship to someone already born in America are two different government powers.

That is where the Fourteenth Amendment, the courts, Congress, and the constitutional separation of powers enter the debate.

Supporting President Trump does not require abandoning limited government. A strong president should enforce the law aggressively while remaining disciplined enough to operate within the Constitution.

In this Go Right with Peter Boykin commentary, I explain why Trump’s narrower approach deserves a fair hearing, why birth tourism must be stopped, and why constitutional guardrails must apply to every president, including those we support.
