The AFCON is easily one of the most interesting tournaments in the world. And if you are not following this current edition, then you are really missing out. The tournament gives us the best drama, the best highlights, and frankly, the best players.

Already, we get to see players like Salah, Mane, Edouard Mendy, Mahrez, Hakimi, Kessie, Ndidi, Haller, and many more superstars at the AFCON. But did you know that there are even more superstars who could very well have featured?

And it was not just Sergio Ramos having the Jersey Name written in Chinese, it was the whole team. Hmm, now this was interesting for our team at goal 90, so we dug a little deeper. Then we found out it wasn’t just PSG, but there were many teams on this list. Have a look at his Barcelona team who just won 4-2 against Athletico Madrid, they had the names written in Chinese on their Jersey as well. Manchester City's Ilkay Gundogan is a really deft football player and an absolute magician with the ball at his feet. Today, we look at 10 things you probably didn’t know about the Former Borussia Dortmund and German midfield maestro. 

Let’s get right to it!  Gundogan made his debut for the Germany national team in 2011, after playing for different levels of Germany’s youth team since 2008. But did you know that up until that debut with the senior team, he could have opted to play for the Turkish national team?  

Unlike many other footballers who have had a monument named after them, Gundogan did not have to wait till he died or retired. When he was just 24, playing for Borussia Dortmund, he had a stadium in his hometown in Turkey named after him by the deputy mayor.

After that game against Nigeria, a reporter, Rama Pantarotto, reminded Messi that his mother sent a red good luck ribbon to the football star before the game. And to Rama’s utmost surprise, Messi revealed to him that he actually wore the lucky ribbon around his ankle for that game.  And looking at his performances in his 2 games before that one, it would be difficult for you to say that that ribbon didn’t actually give Messi and Argentina some luck in that game against Nigeria.  

Anyway, fast forward to 2019. Messi was having yet another amazing season, but his Brazilian teammate, Phillipe Coutinho was not enjoying similar luck. Coutinho made the move to Barcelona in January of 2018, and just never got to find his rhythm at the Catalan club. The Brazilian was under a lot of pressure and scrutiny, and Messi, knowing exactly how it feels to be in that sort of position, decided to help Coutinho out.  Before their Copa Del Rey quarter-final second leg against Sevilla, Messi gave Coutinho his lucky red ribbon. 

Yes, the same one the reporter’s mother gave him in Russia 2018. If it brought him luck, surely it should bring the same for his teammate.
